Rummikub at the Beach

Our last day at the beach was last Friday. For lunch we headed to our now favorite restaurant, The Skipper, and got our now favorite clam chowder. This was our 3rd visit to The Skipper in just over a week (visit 1, visit 2). Julie got the lobster roll, I got a crab roll and Jess had a hankering for ribs, so that’s what she got. It was all great. I love The Skipper and loved that it was right across the street from “our beach.”

Oh, I almost forgot. On the way to the beach I got stung by a bee. I barely even saw it and for sure didn’t recognize to get away from it. My hand just like hit it and it stung the padded part of my palm just down from my thumb. I could see the stinger and it hurt really bad. Attached to the stinger was part of the bee’s body and it was moving. I kind of freaked because I knew I wouldn’t be able to hold still enough to remove the stinger. Luckily Julie heard my yelling and ran over, pulled the stinger out and saved the day. My brother and my niece are allergic to bees, so I was scared for a few minutes.. but then I was eating clam chowder and my face hadn’t swollen up or anything so I figured I was fine. And I was. I just held ice in my hand for a while at the restaurant. My hand was tender for a few days, but that’s about it.

After lunch we went back to the beach. We didn’t want to leave it!! The next day we had to drive back to Jersey and we wanted to prolong the beach time. We spread out our towels and blanket and played Rummikub, Jess’s favorite game of all time. I can remember playing this game on the beach at the Cape in 2002, when New York got 20″ of snow in 2003, and even during the blackout in New York that same year. I won the first game with that 7. Jess, the sore loser that she is, then had to cancel our second game … saying she had something in her eye or something and she had to leave. Just kidding.. her eye really was messed up. At least it was a real reason to make us leave the beach or we might have been there all night!

Joe’s Birthday Dinner

Last week was Joe, Jessica’s dad’s birthday. This week he and Jessica’s mom, Jane, are visiting on the Cape, so one night we invited them to our house for dinner. Jess, Julie and I served a homemade cucumber, yogurt, dill dip with vegetables, hummus and a cheese plate for appetizers. Then we made turkey burgers like we had the other night, grilled vegetables, corn on the cob, and grilled chicken for dinner. Julie made a caprese salad with fresh basil we got from Jess’s uncle, fresh mozzarella and tomatoes. Jane also brought a tasty potato salad – secret ingredient: bacon. Everything was delicious. For birthday dessert we had a Dairy Queen ice cream cake. YUM.

These ladies loved Sadie & spoke to us about their own grandchildren. Julie & I thought this would be a photo of us in 30 years.

The last time I saw Sarah was in New York at Otto in May 2007. I remember she was very pregnant. Well, guess what? She had a baby girl shortly after and now, a little more than a year later, I finally got to meet baby Sadie. Sarah and her husband Matt now live in Massachusetts and yesterday Sarah and Sadie drove down to spend the day with us. Sadie looks exactly like Matt. I know she looks very serious in these photos, but she had so much fun playing in the sand, in the ocean, and with us at the house. And we had so much fun, too. Sadie can say “apple,” “MOM,” and “hot hot hot.” The “hot hot hot” is in a whisper, for some reason. She can also point out her own belly and he mom’s belly. So adorable. Hopefully it won’t be another year that passes by before I see Sarah and Sadie again.

Just Another Day At The Beach

Lobster Roll, Chowder, Fries from The Skipper, South Yarmouth, Cape Cod

Yesterday I walked two miles to and from the post office. It was hot and sunny and felt good to get some exercise. After that I met up with Jessica and Julie at the beach. We stayed there all afternoon and evening. It was gorgeous outside. Partly sunny and with a nice breeze. Great beach weather.

For dinner Julie went to our house and got a bunch of beer for us to drink with our take out order from The Skipper, which we enjoyed while sitting on towels on the beach while the sun went down. We all got clam chowder and confirmed that it is the best chowder we’ve had so far. Delicious flavor, rich and thick. Jess had the clam strip roll and Julie and I had a lobster roll. What about Steph? She had to go home this morning. Sucks, but at least she got to hit up some outlet malls on the way!

After a long day at the beach we decided to make dinner on the grill. Well, first Julie made us mojitos with the fresh mint that Jess’s uncle gave us. Fresh herbs also went into the turkey burgers, which btw, were delicious. Later on we started a fire in the stove/pit thing. Steph was having problems until I realized that she didn’t have any kindling, so I searched around the yard and found some sticks and we got it going. We sat around drinking wine and making smores for a couple hours. I think we smoked the neighbors out, but it was fun.

Steph and I stopped at the Cape Cod Salt Water Taffy Company last night while we were out running errands. Steph has to drive back home today and wanted to get some treats for her office mates. I remember going to this same candy shack the last time I was out here visiting. I love the salty sweetness of salt water taffy.
