Tech Cocktail 14

November 8th, 2010 · No Comments

The last week of October, Jessica and I went to Tech Cocktail. I think this is something like the 14th one they’ve held in Chicago? Back in 2006 our FeedBurner coworker Eric Olson co-founded the event with Frank Gruber and now it has its own conferences and parties in more than a dozen different cities. I just looked up on this rachelleb.. it looks like I missed the first Tech Cocktail, but I attended the 2nd, along with many others. Until last week, though, I hadn’t been to Tech Cocktail for years.

It was nice to check back in. Mostly the same scene. Free drinks. Ron May. In a wheelchair this time. Lots of people. Lots of tech startup demos. Here’s something that’s different: Sponsored by Sprint! Also, you now have to pay admission to get into the event.

About the demos we saw: A lot of them were some version of a daily discount site. One new company was doing ads in games. Their founder told us they were like AdSense but for games… which already exists, so I’m not sure I get that. Another had you sign up for a family style meal through a Facebook and then you’d show up and eat dinner with a bunch of strangers. One was a social wishlist kind of thing. Another had you type in something you wanted to and it would supposedly go out and find deals for you. I used the site as part of the demo and told it I wanted to take a sushi-making class. I know there’s a million places to do this around Chicago. Tech Cocktail was over a week ago. I still haven’t gotten my results from the site. Hm.

Jess and I talked briefly to Brad Feld, who we knew when he was involved in FeedBurner. And then for a bit to Frank, a Tech Cocktail cofounder we know. Frank said he thought that there were about 550 – 600 people there, so it’s good to know the event is still going strong!

Halle’s First Birthday

October 4th, 2010 · No Comments

Brian and Jill threw a big party on Saturday to celebrate Halle’s first birthday. Sometimes it seems just yesterday that Jill was rocking the cute maternity dresses…. or even that Halle was a newborn.. along with Margo, who is her long distance twin in my mind, even though their birthdays aren’t exactly on the same day. I hope they don’t mind, I got them the same birthday gift. Haha.

As it goes with most babies’ first birthdays, Halle didn’t really know what to make of all the people at her house showering her with attention. And she didn’t know what to do with a cake, much less a candle. Good thing that her cousin Quinn was there with two more years of experience going to birthdays parties. He showed her what to do. Speaking of Quinn, how big does he look in the photo below? Definitely not a baby any more.

After everyone was served cake, Halle finally got her piece. Since she kept just playing with the plate, they put her cake directly on the table…. but she really didn’t know what to do with it. Jill admitted that this was the first time Halle has eaten cake. No wonder!

Eventually she started making some abstract art painting with the frosting, but it was a long time before she realized that the cake was food and she actually got some of it in her mouth. Funny.

Happy birthday, Halle. (And happy birthday, Margo, too!)

Shuffleboard at Toons

One of our favorite things about Toons is the shuffleboard. I’ve been playing shuffleboard there since way back in 2004 or 2005.

Oh, and if you couldn’t tell from my friends’ shirts, these photos were taken during World Cup, which is why this douche kept blowing a vuvuzela in my face.

World Cup Soccer: U.S. vs. England

June 14th, 2010 · No Comments

Many of our friends are soccer fans. They used to play in a league, they watch all the games they can, and they’ve even travelled to other countries to watch games. Dallas and I are not big soccer fans, but when our friends rented out the back room at Toons because the U.S. team was taking on the English team, we were there. Our friend who we affectionately call Limey is, of course, from England. He had 1 or 2 other friends cheering on his side, otherwise we were all cheering for the U.S.

There were probably… I don’t know? 50 friends and friends of friends there to watch the game. There was also a drink special. I think it was $30 for 3 hours all you can drink. I didn’t participate. I never drink enough to make a deal like that worth it.

England scored first and Limey went nuts. I mean really nuts. Screaming and jumping. It was pretty funny.

Then the U.S. team scored a point. And everyone made fun of Limey (red shirt).

And he tried to say he’d been so humble when England scored a goal. Yeh right!

The game ended up a tie, which was probably best for everyone. Later on, we played shuffleboard. Dallas used Quinn for a puck.

I’m not sure if it was part of the bet, or if Limey just did it to be a good sport, but he put on a U.S. soccer jersey. Then he took this photo with me with the jersey on and said that it was our wedding gift.

Everyone had thought that hell froze over or pigs were flying because he was wearing the U.S. jersey, so everyone wanted to get their photo with Limey.

Later on we went to Guthrie’s. Chad and Limey swapped shirts. Both were U.S.A. shirts, but look how tight Chad’s shirt is on Limey and how baggy Limey’s shirt is on Chad. Limey had an undershirt on, but Chad? He was topless in the bar for a bit while the shirt situation got sorted out. It happens.

Ted really wanted to do shots. Really bad. Of Jaegermeister, no less. Ew. I somehow avoided it. Others did not. Then others got caught looking like this:

After a while a bunch of us realized we were exhausted. It was only like 9:00 p.m., but we got to Toons at about 12:30 p.m. or a little after, so it had been a long day. We got some grub at a new taco spot on Irving Park, Rockin’ Taco, and called it a night. (More on Rockin’ Taco later!)
