Limey’s Going Away Pub Crawl

November 8th, 2011 · No Comments

Bernie, Vickie, Limey :: Rockwood Place

After 18 years in America, Limey Dave is leaving. His work Visa has expired and without a sponsor he has to go. We have done a few things over the past few weeks as part of Limey’s going away period – cooking class, dinner and football – but this past weekend was the big blowout.

Limes will still be here for a few more weeks and then he’s off to explore the world. I think he’s still unsure of where he’ll end up. I heard Australia and Asia are in the running, as well as England, of course. All nice places to visit, I hear, so I can’t wait to see where he lands.

Wrigley Field

Limey has lived in Wrigleyville the whole time he’s lived in Chicago, so for his going away party he coordinated a pub crawl around the neighborhood. As well, he’s always loved the Cubs so he chose to make the pub crawl baseball themed. Game time began at 1:20 p.m. with a celebratory shot and then we went to 9 bars around Wrigley Field, one bar for each “inning.”

Natalie, Limey, Annie :: Cubby Bear

Paulie & Limey :: Sports Corner

Dallas and I actually missed the first inning at Mullens, but made it for inning two at Rockwood Place. From there we went to Bar Celona from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. Bar Celona opened the bar just for Limey, their most loyal customer, so we spent two hours here instead of one. From 5 – 6 p.m. we were at John Barleycorn, from 6 – 7 p.m. we were at Cubby Bear and from 7 – 8 p.m. we were at Sports Corner.

Here’s a secret: Limey’s shot only had Monster energy drink in it! :: Yak-Zie’s

Somewhere between Yak-Zie’s and Guthrie’s we saw this snowmobile and Sara and Jess had to get on it.

We were supposed to go to Murphy’s Bleachers next, but it was too packed to get in. Limey’s entourage was about 50 people strong and there was just no way we could fit in there. So, we were going to go to an alternate, Bernie’s Tavern, but we ended up going right to the next inning at Yak-Zie’s. The final inning, beginning at 10 p.m., was at Guthrie’s, of course, and we stayed there til close.

Time to go!!!

It was a fun day and great to see all of Limey’s friends come together. He is a great guy, which is reflected in how many people made a point to be there. We were taking over whole entire bars and making them open for business when usually they’re closed. It was such a fun day. Bittersweet. I’ll miss The Limes, but I know this will not be the last we’ve seen of him. Maybe he’ll even move back one day, who knows. Hopefully we can get to see him a time or two more before his actual move date.

Richard’s First Trip to Wrigley Field

August 8th, 2011 · No Comments

Chicago Cubs Dixieland Band

On Saturday my brother Richard came down from Wisconsin and we went to see the Cubs take on the Reds. This was his first time to Wrigley Field. My brother is a big Brewers fan and goes to Miller Park many times each season, so the Wrigley experience was quite different.

We took the bus to the train to get to the park and before meeting up with Brian and Jill we took a walk around the park so I could show him the statues of Harry Caray, Ernie Banks and Billy Williams. We even ran into the Cubs Dixieland Band. They were sitting just below us at the game too. Also, I just wanted him to see how different Wrigley is in that it sits right in a neighborhood. It’s not a big parking lot you drive into and tailgate. There people everywhere; streets closed; bars, restaurants, pop-up vendors; Billy Cub, the wannabe mascot; the rooftops. I think of Wrigley Field as very historic, like Lambeau Field. Wrigley is 97 years old. While Miller Park is very nice, it’s only 10 years old, so it just has a more modern feeling.

Richard & Rachelle

The Brewers are leading our division and the Cubs are so far behind that my brother didn’t really feel bad cheering for a Cubs win. And win they did! The Cubs had an 11-4 victory over the Reds. It was their 7th in a row win, which is the longest winning stretch since 2008.

Surplus Money

Irish Car Bombs

Richard’s first Irish Car Bomb

During the game we played the dollar cup game (I don’t know what it’s called!). I think I lost more than I won. I remember Jill getting a bunch of doubles and taking out and Brian got a home run once and emptied the cup! At the end of the game there was a bunch of money left. I’ve only played this game once before and at the end we bought beer and wings. This time Brian suggested shots! We went across the street to Club 162 (the old Harry Caray’s) and were trying to figure out what to get when it was revealed that my brother never had an irish car bomb before. So, that’s what we got. And wouldn’t you know it? He finished first!

After this we walked over to Jill and Brian’s house and got Halle and headed to Retro on Roscoe. More on that later!

3639 Wrigley Rooftop

Great view from the 7th floor “sun roof” into Wrigley Field.

We had a Roundarch work outing last week and I was happy to hear we were going to 3639 Wrigley Rooftop. I’d never been to any of the rooftops around Wrigley Field and I was excited to check it out.

3639 Wrigley Rooftop is a multi-level building with many different features. The 1st floor is the main entrance. Actually the 1st and 2nd floors are also private residences. The 3rd floor is a fully enclosed area with multiple bars and all different food and snacks and seating where ever you turned. The 4th floor was partially covered, but still pretty open to the elements. The 5th floor was just restrooms and an area where you could get made-to-order grilled sandwiches (burgers and dogs, etc). The 6th floor was like the 4th, covered, but open. The 7th floor was the “sun roof.” The reason I tell you all this is because unfortunately on the day of our work outing the weather took a turn for the worse. It was about 40 degrees outside, raining and very windy. So, usually this building holds 250 people inside and outside, on all levels, but on that day, they were all trying to jam into the enclosed 3rd floor, where you couldn’t even see the game!

It was fun to get out of the office and check out the rooftops, but this was not the ideal situation. Butts to nuts inside or freeze your ass off outside! I hope Roundarch decides to do this again next year and I hope the weather is better. I think rooftops are probably a really fun day, just not this day exactly! At least the Cubs won!

Cubs vs. Cardinals Stormy Night Game

May 16th, 2011 · 2 Comments

Last Wednesday I went with Danny, Jen and Chad to see the Cubs take on the Cardinals. We lasted for about 2 innings before we made a run for it underground. It was like a Godzilla movie… where everyone sees Godzilla coming and flees. We saw dark black clouds rolling in. Parts of the sky were even freakishly bright red. Everyone in the stands made a run for the aisles to get out of there. We finished our beers underground and before we could leave, the skies opened up. It was raining so hard, the roads were immediately flooding. Needless to say the game was delayed. At some point we made a break for one of the bars across the street. We ordered dinner and as our food arrived the game resumed. We watched the Cubs beat the Cardinals 11-4 from the safety of a bar across the street!

Easter Wrigley

April 25th, 2011 · 2 Comments

Dallas and I spent Easter at Wrigley Field with Todd and Kelly watching the Cubs lose to the Dodgers. I think the Cubs are now 11-10 now. Not that surprising, really!

We met up with Kelly and Todd at the new Sports Corner, which I’d never been to. It used to be kind of a dingy, dive bar. Then they demolished it and rebuilt it and now it’s a nice multi-level space with a rooftop beer garden. The old Sports Corner used to be constantly packed to the gills on game days. The new one was not, but the whole city was so empty yesterday because of the holiday. Who knows how it is on a normal day.

At Wrigley we played “the cup game.” The first rule of the cup game is to empty a cup, i.e. chug your beer. After that, everyone puts $2 in the cup. Each player takes turns holding the cup then passing it. Each turn lasts as long as a baseball player is at bat. If your batter gets an out, you have to put a dollar in the cup and pass it to the next person. If your hitter reaches base, you get to take a dollar out of the cup. If your batter gets a double, you get to take $2 from the cup. If your batter gets a triple, you take $3 from the cup. If your batter gets a home run then you get to take all the money from the cup and everyone has to re-ante up $2. I think that’s how it went. Might not be the exact rules. Anyway, I lost about $3 on this game and no one was a big winner, so we used the money to pay for drinks and food later on.

After the 7th inning stretch we went to Bird’s Nest. I don’t usually like leaving before the game is over, but the Cubs were getting killed and it was cold outside. Todd kept talking about how great the wings were at Bird’s Nest. I am not a big wings fan at all. When Dallas orders them, I might eat one.. if they look meaty.. but that’s about my limit. Well, maybe the Bird’s Nest wings really are that good, or maybe it was all the Miller Lite, but I ate probably 6 wings, setting all sorts of personal wing-eating records! I liked that the wings were not soggy at all, very crispy. And the sauce was delicious.

This was the first game I’d been to at Wrigley since 2009! Wow, crazy. I went to a Cubs game last year, but it was in Milwaukee. Nice to be back in the friendly confines.
