Chilly Afternoon at Wrigley

April 2nd, 2008 · 1 Comment

Someone had extra Cubs tickets and the only ones in our entire office who could rearrange their schedules to go were Ed and I. So, off we went! It was chilly outside, maybe in the mid-40s, but not as bad as we thought it might be. The Cubs lost, but they lost to the Brewers so it wasn’t that bad. I wasn’t sure who I was cheering for anyway.

After the game I swung by the new Ernie Banks statue, which was unveiled on opening day on Monday. Some people were making a big deal because his famous quote “Let’s play two” was carved into the base of the statue, but the apostrophe was missing, therefore making a grammatical error. Since Monday an apostrophe was added, but it is lighter and doesn’t seem to match the font used. I had to touch it even to make sure it was really etched in. It looks really odd.

Finally, I took a photo of this Billy Cub character. I’d read about him last season. Supposedly he wants to be the Cubs’ mascot but he can’t get into the games with the costume on because of some no-costume policy. He says that if they let him in then the curse of the billy goat will be lifted and the Cubs will win the World Series. Whatevs.

Wrigley Building In The Fog

Normally we have a long, clear view from my office building but last Thursday it was like our floor was enveloped entirely in a cloud. You could barely see across the street, let alone our normal eastern views down Navy Pier and out on the lake. To the south, the Wrigley Building was barely visable at times. Compare to this, this, this, and this, the normal view.

Wrigley Blower

Wrigley Blower

Last week I saw this guy in the Wrigley Building courtyard. He was up on a cherry picker with some sort of blowing machine, blowing the dirt off the building’s ornamentation. He looks like he’s wearing a biohazard suit.

The Millennium Monument is located in Wrigley Square in Millennium Park. It is nearly a full-sized replica of the original peristyle that stood in the same location between 1917 and 1953.
