Easter Wrigley

April 25th, 2011 · 2 Comments

Dallas and I spent Easter at Wrigley Field with Todd and Kelly watching the Cubs lose to the Dodgers. I think the Cubs are now 11-10 now. Not that surprising, really!

We met up with Kelly and Todd at the new Sports Corner, which I’d never been to. It used to be kind of a dingy, dive bar. Then they demolished it and rebuilt it and now it’s a nice multi-level space with a rooftop beer garden. The old Sports Corner used to be constantly packed to the gills on game days. The new one was not, but the whole city was so empty yesterday because of the holiday. Who knows how it is on a normal day.

At Wrigley we played “the cup game.” The first rule of the cup game is to empty a cup, i.e. chug your beer. After that, everyone puts $2 in the cup. Each player takes turns holding the cup then passing it. Each turn lasts as long as a baseball player is at bat. If your batter gets an out, you have to put a dollar in the cup and pass it to the next person. If your hitter reaches base, you get to take a dollar out of the cup. If your batter gets a double, you get to take $2 from the cup. If your batter gets a triple, you take $3 from the cup. If your batter gets a home run then you get to take all the money from the cup and everyone has to re-ante up $2. I think that’s how it went. Might not be the exact rules. Anyway, I lost about $3 on this game and no one was a big winner, so we used the money to pay for drinks and food later on.

After the 7th inning stretch we went to Bird’s Nest. I don’t usually like leaving before the game is over, but the Cubs were getting killed and it was cold outside. Todd kept talking about how great the wings were at Bird’s Nest. I am not a big wings fan at all. When Dallas orders them, I might eat one.. if they look meaty.. but that’s about my limit. Well, maybe the Bird’s Nest wings really are that good, or maybe it was all the Miller Lite, but I ate probably 6 wings, setting all sorts of personal wing-eating records! I liked that the wings were not soggy at all, very crispy. And the sauce was delicious.

This was the first game I’d been to at Wrigley since 2009! Wow, crazy. I went to a Cubs game last year, but it was in Milwaukee. Nice to be back in the friendly confines.

The Nachos Served at Wrigley Field

I saw these Wrigley Field nachos by Azteca sold at Strack and Van Til. I thought it was odd that they were not even in the refrigerated section. I bet they are disgusting!

Cubs vs. Astros (again!)

The band played Happy Birthday for someone :: Wrigley Field, Wrigleyville, Chicago

Brian and Jill invited us to go to the Cubs game on Monday night. Dallas is travelling for work, so I brought Paul Baker with me. I say vs. Astros “again” because I have seen the Cubs play the Astros at least 3 times (1, 2, 3) and even saw the Mets vs. Astros when I lived in NY. The first Cubs game I ever went to was against the Astros. Kind of strange, I think, since I don’t even go to that many Cubs games each season. This was my first game this season. I had fun. I hadn’t seen Paul Baker for a while. And I hadn’t seen Jill and Brian since we found out they were expecting and now Jill is about 7 months along. She looks great! Kind of bummed I’m going to miss her baby shower this weekend. The Cubs won in the 13th inning, we all sang the song, then went home and went to bed.

Oh, and outside the stadium. Do I even need to say anything about this? Some of these shirts are so offensive, and not just because they are slamming the Packers. Who buys these?

Taco Bell Wears a Cubs Hat

August 14th, 2008 · 5 Comments

Taco Bell, Wrigleyville, Chicago

I noticed yesterday that the Taco Bell drive thru sign (Clark/Addison across from Wrigley Field) is wearing a Cubs hat now. Maybe I’m crazy, but I don’t remember seeing it before. Then again, I try to avert my eyes from Taco Bell when I go by it because I will have a killer craving for a bean burrito if I look at it. I don’t remember the hat when Jess and I ate there before the game a few weeks ago, but I was in pretty rough shape.

A Flickr search shows the hat there in 2005, 2006, and 2007, but this photo that Jocelyn took doesn’t have a cap in 2007.

Am I terribly unobservant? Do they take the hat off and put it on at different times? Was it only off in 2007 to update the sign?

Rachelle & Jessica, Wrigley Field, Wrigleyville, Chicago

Yesterday I woke up and was finally able to eat and drink something. I had toast and some water. Jessica came over and we played Rock Band for a while. Oh, did I forget to mention that we upgraded to PlayStation 3 and that Dallas got Rock Band when I was in Cape Cod? We did. So we played some new songs that Dallas had downloaded. Then we headed over to Wrigley. Jill and Brian gave me two of their tickets so Jess and I went to the game with them. On the way over we were so hungry for pizza. There were two pizza-by-the-slice places we went by but neither were open. This is not NY for sure! Finally we just went to Taco Bell by Wrigley Field and ate bean burritos. A nice first meal after not having eaten for like 30 hours!

The game was fun. It was nice outside and the Cubs won. There was a little baby with a family in front of us.. probably 9 months old? Less than a year, I think. Jess got a popsicle and that baby sure did want it! Brian was teasing her for “teasing” the baby. I think this was the first game that I didn’t even have one beer or hotdog at. I for sure didn’t want to drink after being so sick on Saturday.

After the game we walked Brian and Jill home and were going to head back to my house, but accidentally got distracted by shopping on Southport.
