Dallas checking out all the accolades :: Peter Luger Steakhouse, Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Dallas loves steak, so while in New York I took him to the best steak place around, Peter Luger Steakhouse. I didn’t actually really pay much attention to Peter Luger’s when I lived in New York, but when I was leaving Tien insisted I go and it was awesome. And I’m not the only one who thinks so. For 24 years in a row, Zagat has named Luger’s New York’s No. 1 Steak House. As well, they have a Michelin star rating, and in 2002, Luger’s was named to the James Beard Foundation‘s list of American Classics.

Located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Peter Luger’s has an old-school, German beerhaus decor. The restaurant has been open since 1887, so that makes sense. They serve only the finest USDA PRIME meat. Members of the owner’s family select the sides of beef personally. Then the meat is brought back and dry aged on site.

We went to Peter Luger’s on Sunday afternoon and a lot of people around us were ordering burgers and fries and other more lunch-like things, but we decided not to vary from the standard order: USDA PRIME Porterhouse for two cooked medium rare, creamed spinach for two, and Luger’s special German fried potatoes for two. Dallas also got a beer. I had to have a bloody mary because when we were waiting to check in at the bar area I could see a guy making the mix and it looked delicious.

I remember watching an episode of the Sopranos about 4 or 5 years ago where they tell Christopher that after he’s a “made man” he has to buy them dinners at Peter Luger’s, which was going to be really expensive. I remember commenting to Dallas that I’d been there and we talked about it a bit. I told him someday we’d go there together…. and finally we did.

Chicago Cares Serve-a-thon

Chicago Cares Serve-a-thon

Back when I lived in New York, I used to volunteer with New York Cares. I mostly walked dogs at BARC in Wiliamsburg.

Since I moved to Chicago I haven’t really done any volunteering at all, but I’ve thought about it. A few weeks ago Erin contacted me because she was trying to get a bunch of people together to volunteer for the 14th Annual Chicago Cares Serve-a-thon this Saturday. There are 8,000 volunteers who paint, plant and beautify at schools, parks and agencies all over the city. Then at the end of the day there’s some kind of party for everyone.

It seemed like a great idea, but now I’m back out in New York on business until Friday. I’m flying back Friday night and going to Allison’s going away party because she’s moving to San Francisco, then it’s likely I’ll fly back out to New York on Sunday or Monday. Honestly, I’m not sure I can still commit to the volunteer project, but I’d still like to support it, and ask you to maybe skip one or two drinks the next time you go out or dessert with dinner next time and consider donating that money to Chicago Cares. Things may not come together enough for me to be there for the Serve-a-thon, but I just made a donation to start things off, and ask that maybe you do too. It’s quick and easy and you can use your credit card.

So, I had this list of things I wanted to do and places I wanted to visit one last time before I left. And most of it I’ve covered. A couple weeks ago Tien said “Peter Luger’s isn’t on that list, but it should be. I’m making us reservations!” and he did. And I’m so glad! I don’t think anyone who’s been there would dispute that it’s the best steakhouse in New York. It’s been voted #1 by Zagat’s every year since at least 1986. The food was so delicious. For starters we had shrimp cocktail and the onion and tomato plate. Then we had medium rare steak for 3 and medium steak for 2. For sides we had German fried potatoes, creamed spinach and fries… then dessert, of course! Key lime pie and a fudge sundae to split. Oh, and our waiter Stanley was this cute old man. Efficient, but nice.

Jeannette, Yvan, Tien, and Jess surprised me with a few New Yorkish going away gifts too. Some tumblers with the subway lines, a magnet that is an old subway token, a New York neighborhoodie, and some hot pink boy-cut panties that say rachelleb.com on the back!! Totally unexpected! Thank you for everything, guys! I will miss you dearly!

Considering Park Slope

Park Slope, Brooklyn

For some time I’ve wanted to get my own apartment, and since everything is so expensive in Manhattan, I’ve been trying to learn more about neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Park Slope is probably #1 on my list right now. I used to visit there when Mark and Wendy lived there*, but a recent visit by myself to explore the neighborhood confirmed it’s #1 status.

Things I like about Park Slope

  • it’s close to Prospect Park
  • it’s quiet (in comparison to Manhattan)
  • the streets are shaded with trees and lined with brownstones, quite charming
  • the avenues are a mix of mom & pop shops, cafes, boutiques, restaurants and bars

So.. if anyone has any leads on any studio or 1 bedroom apartments in Park Slope, please pass them on. Oh, and other Brooklyn neighborhoods that I am considering are Fort Greene, Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Carroll Gardens, but I need to do more research on each of these areas. Any other suggestions?

* Earlier this week, a journalist contacted me trying to get Mark & Wendy’s phone number. She was writing a story for the New York Post about people moving from Park Slope, Brooklyn to Montclair, NJ and wished to speak to them. She found out about their move via my website. Wendy was interviewed and the article should be in the real estate section either this weekend or next.

Update: Here’s the article.
