This morning Mike pulled some strings and got me access to the Reid, Murdoch & Co. building. It’s that red building with the clocktower just north of the river between LaSalle & Clark. They had the clocktower open for people who work in the building and certain media types to explore and watch the White Sox victory parade & rally from. Also, NBC 5 was there and Warner Saunders was there interviewing people on the rooftop.

These are a few of my favorite photos of the celebration. Here there are a ton more photos that I took and that others at Chicagoist took.

Movie Clips:
» Root Root Root for the White Sox (.mov, 884k)
» Na Na Na Na Hey Hey Hey Goodbye (.mov, 880k)
» The White Sox Arrival (.mov, 664k)

I have more photos from the actual clock tower and also photos and a story about someone pretty famous that I spoke to and took photos of.. without really knowing who it was til later! Coming soon….

Naoko & Doug’s wedding continued on as all guests were trollied (our trolley was named Elvis) from The Drake Hotel to Gibson’s Steakhouse. Joey was on our trolley and got on the mic to give us a drunken “Doug is my best friend and I never thought I’d see him get married, I’m so happy” speech combined with a White Sox World Series score update. It was pretty funny. At Gibson’s, after getting drinks and being seated, there was a sake ritual with a KEG of sake and traditional wooden sake cups called masu. Have you ever seen a KEG of sake? It’s A LOT.

The dinner and party were tons of fun, but here’s a tip: eating a grilled cheese at noon.. then later on having a ton of drinks and not eating dinner til like 10pm isn’t a very good idea. Especially when you’re sitting at a table with some underagers who wind up out-drinking you. And also when there’s a lot of banzai and kampai toasts going on. Not so great. Some people might have even drank so much, so fast that they got scolded for helping themselves to liquor behind the bar and couldn’t even remember the steak they ate from the best steakhouse in the city.. the one they’d been looking forward to for weeks… and then that person might have had to be the first to leave the party! But that wasn’t me. My steak was yum yum and so were the cheesy scalloped potatoes with the.. eh.. crunchy stuff. Really good. And the sake was probably the best I’ve ever had.

So this was the last wedding in the Rachelle & Dallas wedding circuit this year. Each one was very different from the others and was really a lot of fun… but honestly, I’m glad this was the last one.. and so glad it was local! To show the diversity of the weddings this year – here are links to them -

» Naoko & Doug’s classic Chicago wedding that mixed American, Buddhist & Japanese traditions

Ahh! Don’t Make Me Speak!

Being the naturally shy, behind-the-scenes, just get it done, details person that I am, tonight I did something I totally would never do. I sat on a panel called “Writing For Blogs” along with 2 other people and presented and answered questions at an Independent Writers of Chicago monthly meeting. I hauled Matt & Scott along with me to sit in the audience for support, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as I’d feared. Most everyone there was starting out at ground zero with questions like “What is a blog?” and since I’ve been blogging for.. I don’t know.. like 5 years, and have been doing Chicagoist for about a year and a half, I was pretty comfortable. Hopefully I was some help to some people wanting to get into it more.

The photos – The meeting was held at the Chicago Athletics Association building at 12 S. Michigan Ave. The “Members Only” sign is intimidating, but it was pretty easy to get in. On the bottom, Matt and Scott and I passed this on the way walking to the El/bus. I’d never seen it before but Scott and Matt said they always light it up for different sporting events and things. It said “Sox Pride” but you can only see “Sox” from where we were standing.

I have another meeting to attend on Friday. A breakfast Business Wire event where I’ll be on another panel on blogging called “Navigating the Blogosphere.” I hope it goes as easy as the one tonight. And extra special thanks to Scott and Matt for being there for moral support tonight!

Sox Are Division Champs

Go Sox!, The Loop, Chicago

When I moved here I was lead to believe (by Cubs fans, of course) that the White Sox and their fans were the armpit of the city, but look what they’ve gone and done now. Proven me and everyone wrong! I’m not a big baseball fan, but I’ve been to two Sox games this year. … so Go Sox, I guess! With the Cubs (and their stink record), the Sox are our only chance in hell, it seems.

Some of Dallas’ friends from Boston were in for the weekend. On Friday night we went to a Boston Red Sox v. Chicago White Sox game. Appropriately, the giveaway that night was 2 pairs of Hanes socks. They came in handy in the 90+ degree heat. Dallas looked like some kind of pimp.. it was him and 9 girls. Luckily we got Cousin to come sit by us and help relieve Dallas of some of the pimping duties.
