A few extras from my trip to New York. Above is a photo from my room at the Wyndham Garden Times Square South. The room was really small, but pretty nice anyway. After I checked in and got to the room I looked out the window and saw this:

I hope she’s ok. Later on at night I looked out again and saw this:

That night I didn’t see friends for dinner. I was tired! I took a nap then went out for a walk. Around the corner from the hotel was Thai Select. Swanky inside.

I just got a take out order and went back to the hotel. I thought their wontons were really pretty (tasty too!).

I was finished eating dinner and was doing some work on my computer when there was a knock on the door. I looked through the peephole and saw a hotel employee with the tray. Through the door I yelled, “I didn’t order anything!” and he said “Courtesy of the hotel.” I opened the door and this is what he brought in:

I forgot that when I booked the hotel I signed up for the Wyndham points program. When I signed up there were some questions about personal preferences. I vaguely remember checking off some boxes about fruit and Diet Coke. It was a nice surprise.

At the Javits Center the outside of the building is pretty cool – the glass and the space frame structure. But the inside is all cement and bleh, drab. Seems dated. At least you can still see the cool glass and structure from parts of the inside.

And finally, a photo from the Web 2.0 Expo.

I haven’t written much here about it, this being my personal site. All of my notes and links and everything are posted on my work intranet. I will say, though, the conference was really good. Here are the things I liked best:

rachelleb.com Mobile: 2003 vs. 2009

October 15th, 2009 · 4 Comments

Back in 2003 I got a new cell phone and was really excited because I could view rachelleb.com ON MY PHONE. Holy Jetsons! This was the future! Here’s what it looked like:

rachelleb.com on my cell phone

Obviously I did not access the web very often from my cell phone. I didn’t even text back then. In the years since then, I’ve upgraded my phone a little, but it was always very much the same. Same button interface, for the most part. But ohhhhhh… the screen was in color. I texted a ton but never accessed the internet.

Fast forward to 2009. I got an iPhone for my birthday. The thing I do with it the least? Make phone calls. I got my first bill and it says I made 127 phone calls, a number I think is highly inflated because I know there were bunch of times I fake called people to see what the photo I assigned to them would look like. By fake call, I mean I hung up so quickly that the call never went through, but it stayed in my logs. Days and days go by without me making or receiving a phone call on my phone. On the otherhand, I had 600+ real incoming and outgoing text messages. And I can’t tell you how much time I’ve spent online or playing games on the iPhone.

Oh, and here’s what rachelleb.com looks like these days on my cell phone:

What a difference.

The Rough Guide to the Internet 1999

I found this copy of The Rough Guide to the Internet 1999 when we were moving. I kept it because I think it’s so funny. Back in 1999 there was a book published that listed a bunch of good web sites? Seems so backwards now.
