The Pihea Trail was pretty cool. It went along a cliff side and had views of the ocean and the Ne Pali* coast. I think. It was really foggy up there so we couldn’t really see anything. Dallas said if you kept going on this trail for a real long time you’d end up in the Alakai Swamp, one of the wettest patches of land on earth. We only went a mile or something, because we were hungry and had to get back to meet Allison when she arrived from the airport.

* I learned on this trip that “pali” means “cliff” which is helpful because it’s mentioned a lot in Hawaiian.

After driving up the canyon and stopping at various lookouts to take in the view, we parked at the end, at Kalalau Lookout, as far as the road would go. We could have gone farther, but the road was closed for construction.

It was really foggy up there so we couldn’t really see anything. Dallas said there’s only been a couple times in his life when he’s been to this spot and has actually seen much, although one of the times was when Killian was there visiting with him. Killian, that jerk! :)

After taking in the view, we walked up the road farther. It was closed but you could still walk on it. They weren’t doing construction on the road but on some things next to the road. Not sure what.. At one point when we were walking down the road, Susan turned to us and said “who wants to run!?” and we all just kind of looked at each other like “no way.” So she ran ahead while Dallas, John and I walked. But then I kept stopping to take photos so Dallas and John got way ahead of me and I had to run too.

What we were walking towards was the Pihea Trail head.

I don’t think calla lilies are indigenous to Hawaii, but these were just growing by the restrooms at Koke’e State Park. Crazy.

Everyone stops off at Koke’e State Park when driving up Waimea Canyon. It’s a good place to stop and take it all in and use the restroom, if needed. And it gives you a break from the windy mountain roads. Especially good for John, who was a little leery about even sitting on the same side of the car that the cliff was on!

A trip to Kaua’i would never be complete without a drive and hike up in Waimea Canyon, so that’s what Susan, John, Dallas and I did. For breakfast in the morning we sliced up a fresh pineapple, packed some for the day, and then headed up the west side of Kaua’i to Waimea.

Some of these photos were taken at Koke’e State Park and some were just taken at lookouts along the drive up the canyon road.
