On Wednesday we actually slept in a little bit… if you consider 8:45 a.m. sleeping in. It was probably the longest we’d slept all vacation. I did an Epsom salt soak for my legs and then got some berries and yogurt for breakfast. I headed down to the front house to help pack lunches before heading out for the day. On the agenda? Waimea Canyon and Polihale Beach.

I’ve been to Waimea Canyon many times but most of the people I was with had never been there, so it was fun to see it through their eyes. There are many trails at the canyon, but since we wanted to do other things that day, we just went to the main lookout and took some photos there. The skies were cloudy, but you could still see the canyon… not as good as other times I’ve been there though. Still, the enormity of it always astounds me!

Dallas’s House

July 29th, 2009 · No Comments

A few random photos. These first are pretty crappy and only meant to illustrate one thing: location. The house where Dallas grew up looks out to Waimea Canyon behind it (left) and the ocean in the front (right).

We were driving down the driveway and all these birds, surprisingly not chickens or roosters, would not move! We just stepped on it and chased them down.

I don’t know how people keep clean in Waimea. This photo was actually taken in Poipu, but there’s never any hiding the fact that I’ve been in Waimea. Red dirt in every cranny.

I’d never been to the North Shore of Oahu, so Dallas took me up there one day. We drove around and then stopped at Ehukai Beach, then Waimea Bay Beach Park, then we stopped and shopped a little in Haleiwa and then stopped for shave ice at Matsumoto’s.

These photos are from Ehukai, our first stop. Ehukai is the home of the Banzai Pipeline, which makes it one of the most spectacular and dangerous beaches in the world. In the winter, waves can reach 25 – 30 feet high here. In the summer it’s calmer and good for swimming and snorkeling. The Pipeline is actually about 100 yards to the left of Ehukai Beach. The steepness of the winter waves cause the crest to fall forward and make a tube. And then you get all those classic shots of the surfers inside the tubes of water. Each year there are surfing competitions here.

Coming down

I don’t know why I took so many photos on our helicopter tour with Inter-Island Helicopters, because I could have taken 3,000 photos and still not captured the beauty and magnificence of the trip. This was definitely the thing that I was the most nervous and excited for on the trip. It was a great experience, of course it was tinged by two helicopters crashing only days later, one of them being the helicopter we flew in, piloted by our same pilot. If you want to read more on that, see this earlier post (related posts where my photos were used on Hawaii news broadcasts here and here). Like I said there, I thought our pilot was great and informative and fun and safe. It’s too bad that the close proximity of the crashes tainted our ride. .. like not the experience itself, but how I feel about ever doing it again or recommending it to others.

I wasn’t going a good job editing out photos I didn’t like, I like them all… so see all of my photos here. Also, here are Allison’s short video clips taken during our flight – video 1, video 2.

One other thing, Puka Dog. John had become obsessed with trying a Puka Dog, which is a Hawaiian style hotdog. I’ll get into it more in a few posts, but on this day “Puka! Puka! Puka!” was kind of a mantra for us… whenever we were getting freaked out by the Helicopter or anything else we chanted it or said something about “Live for the Puka!” At one point during our helicopter tour John pressed the button to speak and asked Donald, our pilot, if he liked Puka Dog. Donald didn’t understand what he said and all the rest of us were just giggling. Donald was like “what? what?” so I pressed my button and said “He wanted to know if you like Puka Dog!” Donald sort of just rolled his eyes and said they were over rated. I think John started crying. Now what did we have to live for!? Kidding!
