Jessica, Tien, Jeannette, Yvan and I had dinner at Compass tonight to celebrate NYC Restaurant Week*. Really swank place, they’ve won awards for their interior design. The food is wonderfully cooked and beautifully presented. I had the sweet garlic cappuccino with Parmesan croutons, the stuffed skate wing with crushed potatoes and sauce meununiere and the apple strudel with caramel sauce, gianduja and vanilla ice cream. Also, before dinner at the bar we had these really delicious breadsticks and after dinner we were each given a cranberry scone to take home for breakfast the next morning. And that’s not all! Another round of desserts included a plate of blueberry panna cotta surrounded by pistachio cookies, coconut bon bons and some chocolate truffles (more on this later!). So.. Compass.. excellent place. Really really nice… until we roll in. Then things quickly go to hell (in a good way!).

I don’t know if it was the wine that we were drinking or the breadsticks at the bar that were laced with an addictive drug (they really were, I confirmed it with the hot bartender!) or if there was just something in the air.. but we were entirely up to no good the whole evening. We go to one of the best restaurants that I’ve been to in quite a while and forgot to check our 6th-grade humor at the door! But that’s ok.. our waiter was into it! Before we even ordered or dinner Yvan and Jessica placed a bet that had Jessica ordering her dinner something like this:

Jessica: “The beef shoulder… does that have a bone in it? I want the big bone inside, pleeeeese!” (as she says please she makes a gesture towards.. uh.. her netherlands).
Waiter: “Uh. Can you say that again?”
Jessica: ” I want the big bone inside, pleeeese!” (gesture again)
Everyone at the table: Laughing hysterically and hiding behind their menus.. Jess tries to explain the bet.
Waiter: “These guys paid you to say that!?”
Jessica: “Yeh!”
Waiter: “I have to go get our manager.” (He now disappears and we wonder if we’re going to get kicked out of this fine establishment. He reappears with the manager)
Waiter: “Please repeat what you just said.”
Jessica: “I want the BIG BONE INSIDE, pleeese!” (head toss & gesture)
Manager: Cracks up laughing
Waiter: Cracks up laughing
Everyone at the table including Jess: Hyperventilating
Manager: “Sure thing! I’ll have a private talk with the chef about that!”

Our waiter’s name at Compass was Bobby and he was awesome. Really fun guy.. he could see that we were a fun group and he made sure we had a great time. He was honest about selections on the menu and spent a ton of time at our table chatting with us, laughing and joking. He joined in on our dirty conversations.. Jessica even told him a prison sex joke we learned last night (thanks, Jeff!). And someone who will remain nameless, ahem.. me, had to shake it like a Polaroid picture. A riot. Bobby is southern Irish gent who sure could hold his liquor. And made sure that the four hours we were there were spent eating wonderful food and laughing our guts out between bites. This was all great for us and probably very annoying to the tables around us.. but oh well! There are many things that went on and that were talked about that will not be mentioned here and also many photos, including one on Bobby’s cellphone cam that is particularly embarrassing to me, that I hope will never see the light of day.. I just hope Bobby has a job tomorrow. That’s all I’ve got to say!! Oh, and just so you know, a 30% tip will get you a free round of drinks, an additional dessert or two and this adorable photo:

Last night Dahlia had a party in honor of her friend’s visit to NYC. I knew Dahlia, Sam and Tien going in but there were many other people there and it was nice to meet them. Dahlia made some fabulous chorizo/potato/raisin empanadas that I must get the recipe for!

ING New York City Marathon 2003

November 3rd, 2003 · 16 Comments

The headlines of the day are about P. Diddy running the marathon.

The first spot we went to see the marathon was at 9th Ave. & 4th St. – about mile 7. These are the starter cars coming by before the runners.

Two little boys in front of us dressed up in their halloween costumes and were getting their hand slapped by a lot of runners.

We saw both my mom and my dad running at this point. They were running together.

Firefighters cheer on an FDNY runner.

The next spot we went to see the marathon was in East Harlem at 103rd St. and 1st Ave. This is P. Diddy and his crew running by. I don’t know if you can actually see him in this photo. We did see him running twice during the day.

Robin, Superman & Batman ran the marathon. I also saw Spongebob.

At this point we saw mom & dad, but they were no longer running together. Dad was about 10 minutes in front of mom.

Mom

Mom said she needed a “daughter hug” for encouragement.

The next spot we went to was 103rd St. and 5th Ave. right next to the park on a big hill. This was mile 23 and the hill was walked by many of the runners. No sign of dad. We missed him.

Here comes mom on mile 23.

Finally we went to the Family Reunion area where everyone meets up. After waiting a while we found mom but couldn’t find dad for quite a while.

We walked up and down and around, everyone searching for him. We were sort of afraid because we hadn’t seen him at the last spot we went to to cheer on the runners. Finally we found him.

He had been walking all around looking for us. I gave mom flowers for her great achievement.

I thought dad could use a big huge beer after all that running. He’s saved it for later.

Mom & dad wanted to steal this smart car.

Congratulations to my mom and dad who both ran & finished the NYC Marathon yesterday. It’s inspiring .. not that you’re going to see me running any kind of marathon any time soon!

I Couldn’t Have Walked Another Block,
Even If You Paid Me

AIDS Walk New York
Handing Out Water at Checkpoint #2, AIDS Walk, Upper West Side, Manhattan

Yesterday, Jeannette, Masako, and I participated in AIDS Walk New York. The 10k walk didn’t seem as long as I thought it would, maybe because all along the route there were volunteers enthusiastically urging you on and thanking you for walking. Or because there were 3 checkpoints where volunteers were handing out everything from Odwalla bars to ice cream sandwiches. Or maybe it was the bands and cheerleaders that were performing along the route. It took us about 3 hours to complete. The crowd was so think, there were so many people participating, that it was really difficult to walk at a decent pace. Thanks to everyone who sponsored me on the walk.

9th Avenue International Food Festival
Rachelle & Jeannette, 9th Avenue International Food Festival, Hells Kitchen, Manhattan

After crossing the finish line, a much needed bathroom break, a quick nap in Central Park and some dog petting, we went from the park over to 9th Avenue (my old neighborhood) and walked down about 20 blocks through the 9th Avenue International Food Festival. This was the 30th year of the food festival and many of the vendors I remembered from last year. The pirogies were as good as I’d remembered and the grilled corn on the cob was outrageous. I hadn’t had grilled corn on the cob forever.

Because we still hadn’t punished ourselves enough, we then walked through the Hells Kitchen Flea Market and then walked several blocks trying to catch a cab with no success, so we took the bus to the Triple 5 Soul sample sale where we all were able to pick up some clothes at about half the retail price.

Oh, but I must not be in as bad of shape as I thought, because today I feel fine. With the exception of a slightly bruised left heel, I’m not sore at all.

Easter Weekend

March 31st, 2002 · Comments Off

What a long, fun holiday weekend. I did so many things.. I’m not ready for it to end and to go back to work tomorrow.

Yesterday I started the day with a White Mochaccino and a giant peanut butter cookie from The Coffee Pot and walked to the upper west side. I did some shopping and then saw a film at the Lincoln Center Theater. It was a Mexican film called Y Tu Mama Tambien (And Your Mother Too). It’s about 2 young Mexican boys who take a road trip with an older woman. If you like to watch people have sex you should go see this movie. Actually, though, it did have a good story line and was really funny. Man, who am I kidding? I just like to watch people have sex. (Mom, I’m joking!)

I spent the rest of the afternoon in Central Park reading The Hobbit, eating a hotdog and people watching. It was a gorgeous spring day and all the freaks were there. That night I went out. 5 guys + Rachelle = Interesting.

For Easter I made dinner with friends. It was delicious. They made the most tender pork, asparagus, and rosemary potatoes. And for dessert I made an Easter cake. Now I’m going to lug my big, bloated belly into bed and go to sleep.

Happy Easter!
