Kauaian Visitors

November 22nd, 2010 · 2 Comments

Last week Dallas’s Uncle Dee, from Kauai, was in town for a conference downtown. Aunty Kathy and cousin Casey, who now lives in Seattle, came along for the trip. They were all staying in a hotel not far from my office so we got to see everyone a few times. We went to dinner at Harry Carray‘s, Dallas took them to lunch at Revolution Brewing in our neighborhood, and these photos were taken out at Aunty Gail’s, in the suburbs, where we ordered in Portillo’s Italian beef sandwiches.

It was nice to see everyone again. I’d only met Casey one time before – at Tandy & Chris’s wedding in 2005. I think she has lived in L.A. (for college) and Seattle (working at an indie record label) the whole time that I’ve known Dallas. We’ll be seeing Uncle Dee and Aunty Kathy again soon, when we go to Kauai in a few months. A FEW MONTHS!!!

Russian Fort Elizabeth & Kauai Coffee

July 30th, 2009 · 2 Comments

On our last day in Kauai, Dallas went golfing with Uncle Dee, so I hung out with Aunty Cathy. I had a few sights I wanted to check out and Aunty Cathy wanted to go shopping, so we just decided to do it all together and then go to the beach afterward.

First stop: Russian Fort Elizabeth. I’d always seen the signs for the Russian fort on the side of the road just before Waimea town, so I wanted to check it out. Surprisingly, Aunty Cathy had never been there, even though it’s only a half mile away from where she lives. Verdict: There’s a reason why she hadn’t been there, I think. There’s nothing to see really. It’s just an overgrown site. There’s one sign with a map by the parking lot, but you can’t take it with you, so when you’re on the ruins, you can’t identify anything. Major letdown.

Next stop: Kauai Coffee. Again, a sign I’d passed by a lot and wanted to finally check out. This was a bit of a let down because I thought there would be actual tours or you’d be able to see how they harvest and make their coffee and there wasn’t any of that. Still, you could taste all the coffee you wanted, see the coffee plants, and learn more about the coffee-making process. There was a cute store and I bought a few bags of coffee to bring home with me.

More photos from our barbecue on Sunday. It was fun to have all of the family over, both from out of town and the suburbs. We’ve been at this place for about a year and hadn’t had everyone over yet, so mark that off the list.

On a technical note, I somehow had my camera ISO set to 1600 on all of these, when I probably normally would have been on 400. Some of the photos were unusable, some look barely passable, and some I have still posted even though they’re really noisy. Same goes for the wonton photos. I think it’s time to tape a note on my camera that says “CHECK ISO SETTING” to remind myself every time.

I came across these photos from August 2006 when Dallas’ family all went out to Marché because Uncle Dee was in town. The photos didn’t come out that great, but just looking at them made me hungry to go back there all over again. Marché has some really great French food. I was afraid it’d be extra foufy, but it wasn’t too bad. The interior was really fun and the food was delicious.

For dinner we went over to where Dallas’ Uncle Dee and Auntie Kathy live, the house where Dallas grew up in Waimea. It’s always fun for me to go back and see the house and imagine when Dallas’ family lived there. This time his sister and brother, Caroline and Jordan, were with us so we heard a few stories about things that happened there. Going over for dinner is a tradition I always look forward to when visiting Kaua’i.

I was also excited because the last time we saw Marissa was at her sister Tandy’s wedding and she and her husband were expecting their first child. And now it’s been so long since the baby was born. She has a little girl named Såfina who is more than a year old. So cute!

Uncle Dee and Auntie Kathy were great hosts and great cooks. They made dinner for all of us who were visiting and all we had to do was show up with beer. We got Guinness for Uncle Dee and Hinano, a Tahitian beer, for ourselves. These are all the things we had:

  • Barbecue chicken
  • Fried Saimin
  • Sushi with canned tuna (local specialty)
  • Kimchi
  • Poke
  • Lomi lomi salmon
  • Seared Ahi
  • Poi
  • Grilled chicken
  • Grilled steak
  • Lettuce salad
  • Macaroni salad
  • Fruit salad
  • Asparagus
  • Rice
