For a Book on Ukrainian Immigration

Earlier this year, someone representing the Primary Education Division of Macmillan Publishing in New Zealand contacted me about purchasing photographs of the Ukrainian community in Chicago. They were to be used for a series of children’s educational books about Immigration into the US and would be in American and Australian schools. I ended up only selling them the photo above, but it was a unique experience. US to New Zealand for books used in the US and Australia. The pay rate was kind of weird too. What they’d pay me in NZ money didn’t convert well into US dollars so I had to get them to go up some. I should be getting a copy of the book soon. They said it’d be published by the end of the year.

They also wanted to know if I had photos of the Guatemalan community in Chicago. I’ve eaten at a couple Guatemalan restaurants here, but other than that, no dice.

Last night I wanted something just light and fresh and summery for dinner. And something that required a very minimal amount of cooking, since it’s so hot out. I made Shrimp & Crab Salad Rolls with Quick Corn & Potato Chowder. Click the link below to see the recipes.

I Heart Edmars, Wicker Park, Chicago

I believe this is in response to an old supermarket in Ukrainian Village, Edmars, being replaced with a new Dominick’s. It hasn’t been done yet, but will soon. Back in September 2004, I took a photo of a flyer protesting this. I wonder when it’s going down. I hear people say they don’t want the big bad chain supermarket Dominick’s then turn around and say that Edmars stinks and it will be nice to have the Dominick’s.

Because I’m some kind of moron, I showed this photo to Dallas and was like “Look, Urkel!” and he was like “WTF are you talking about? That’s Spike Lee! Hello? Mars Blackman?” And then he made me look at these videos (scroll down past the family photos to the links by the Air Jordans at the end).

Angels Barn Angels, Ukrainian Village, Chicago

This weekend I met up with Roland for a laptop playdate at Atomix. I’d never been there before but it was a pretty cool place.. good lattes. On the walk there and the walk back I saw a few strange things.

On the way there, just off Damen Ave., parked in front of Lava Lounge, I saw this van with a “Se Vende” sign on it. Translated, it’s “For Sale,” and since there’s a large Spanish-speaking population in the neighborhood, it’s not that weird. What I found was strange was the writing on the van above the sign: “Honk if you support Swiss art.” What the? And in combination with the Spanish sign. Bizzare.

On the walk back home, I saw this strange Angels Barn Angels thing that was on the corner of Augusta & Wolcott (i think). It’s a caged angel? I don’t know what that’s supposed to mean.
