In grand family tradition of playing bar games for 40th birthday parties, we all gathered last weekend to celebrate Chad’s big birthday and played Jeopardy: Chad Edition. Remember, for Brian’s party there was the Pub Crawl Olympics and for Jill’s there was Survivor Wrigleyville.

Jeopardy Team Representatives: Carrie, Limey, Ted

For Chad’s 40th birthday Jen rented out the beer garden at Fizz, but since it was raining, we were in a heated tent. We paid $35 for all the drinks we could drink for 4 hours and Jen arranged for some really delicious food to be served as well. At the appointed time, we all gathered to play Jeopardy. When we arrived Jen had given us each a number: 1, 2 or 3. This was to sort people into 3 teams. I was on Team 2: Team Burrito House. We chose Limey to be our team representative. When the answers were presented, Limey had to yell Burrito House to buzz in with the correct question. The other teams and reps were Ted for Team Guthries, Team 1, and Carrie (and later Danny) for Team Syracuse.

Getting intense!

These were the categories – For the Jeopardy round there was The Man and His Bans, Potent Potables, and Movies & Music. In Double Jeopardy there was Chad’s Sports Follies, Brushes With Fame, and He’s Had a Job or Two. The Final Jeopardy category was Location, Location, Location and the question was about how many places Chad has lived in Chicago. Jill and Brian constructed the Jeopardy board. Jill played Vannah White, flipping the answers open, while Brian did his best Alex Trebec, reading the answers off. Jen was the scorekeeper.

Chad had to charade out one of the Jeopardy answers.

Final Jeopardy

Chen-Je with two winning girls, Caroline & Loden

The game got really heated with everyone screaming to ring in and shouting answers. Before Final Jeopardy my team, Team Burrito House, was in the lead by far! We could not mess this up! Well, leave it to Limey…. he wagered something like $4,000 more than we even had, which seems to be breaking the rules to me, and then we lost everything, and then some, when no one on our team know how many places Chad lived in. Wah wah wahhhh…

Cousin & Todd

Baltimore Bomb

Baltimore Bombs

Jill & Dallas

Chad’s high school friend Todd flew into town from Maryland and introduced us to a new shot called the Ravens Bomb. Well, when he’s tailgating at football games he calls it that, but we were opting to call it the Baltimore Bomb. In Baltimore they drop a grape vodka shot into a cup of Red Bull energy drink. At Fizz they only had Monster energy drink, so we used that. Check out the awesome custom shot glasses Fizz had. Perfect for bombs. As for the Baltimore Bomb? It tasted awesome. The grape vodka tasted just like grape soda. Todd did warn me that they will sneak up on you if you are not careful, but I only had two. They were flowing pretty readily, though. I think they did sneak up on some people. Or… it could have been the other bombs…

Chad’s Birthday Cheesecakes

Dessert: Carbombs or Cheesecake?

Of course a night out with all these guys is not complete without Irish Car Bombs. Right as Trent was ordering a round, Jen was in the other room gathering people for cake! Ed (remember The Baked Escape) made two white chocolate raspberry swirl cheesecakes (with a chocolate cookie crust) for the party. So delicious. I’ve had this one a few times. It never disappoints. Just as the cake was being cut the Irish Car Bombs arrived. So, choose your poison: Cheesecake or booze. Or both. Why not? Actually, I only had a tiny sliver of the cake and passed on the bombs.

Todd & Brian

Dancing around the birthday boy.

After this, I don’t know what happened. I didn’t feel very drunk, but there was a lot of dancing. And Ed sent me photos of things this week that I only vaguely remember happening. So yeh. Kind of proud that us old people can still have a good time!

Happy Birthday, Quinn

April 12th, 2011 · 1 Comment

Last week was Quinn’s birthday and on Sunday was the celebration. He and all his friends went to The Little Gym and then after that we met up with everyone for dinner at Village Tap. It is quite remarkable how healthy and awesome Quinn is, given that four years ago he was born 15 weeks too early, weighed about a pound, had 2 holes in his heart and had barely functioning lungs and kidneys. Talk about a miracle kid! Four years later he is a perfectly healthy, smart and rambunctious little boy!

Quinn is still a huge fan of Dallas’s. Even more now, I think, because Quinn is starting to like comic book characters and Dallas always knows everything about comics. It’s about time that all those boxes of comics in our closet paid off in some way. Whenever Quinn points to a comic book character and asks Dallas who it is, Dallas always knows.

We noticed Quinn was into comics a few weeks ago when we saw him at The Piggery. In his little backpack he had sticker books of comics. He played with the book and talked to Dallas about it for so long! So, for his birthday we got him some popup comic books. One was DC Super Heroes and one was The Amazing Spider-Man Pop-Up, because Quinn especially loves Spidey.

Some of the pop ups in the DC comics book were so big and elaborate. They were way taller than Quinn when he was sitting down with the book open in front of him. And, if that’s not enough, this book even had a battery in it and the Batman spread had a lit up bat signal coming out of it! I think he liked them. I know I did! haha

As I was posting this, I realized we had a few more photo so of Quinn from the last few weeks. We hadn’t seen Quinn since New Years Eve with all of the wedding planning and wedding trip, so it was nice to hang out with him these past few weeks.

Here’s from a different night at the Village Tap. After dinner Dallas took Quinn next door and got him a chocolate ice cream cone.

As if Dallas wasn’t already Quinn’s favorite, now he was really his buddy! Of course this all looks innocent, but Dallas is always teaching Quinn such nice habits. …. like telling people they STINK! I’m sure Quinn’s preschool teachers are loving that one. Quinn doesn’t forget either. The last two times we saw him he made sure to tell me I was stinky!

Finally, one from The Piggery, where Quinn had the biggest brownie & ice cream sundae ever!

Kohala Coast, Hawaii

March 22nd, 2011 · 2 Comments

After lunch we stopped a few more places in Lihue and then headed for the airport. While there we saw Loden, Trent, Shannan, Todd, Kelly, Brian, Sara, Adam and Christine – all flying back to the mainland, while we stay in Hawaii for 5 more days. HA! We flew from Lihue to Honolulu and then Honolulu to Kona. I wish you could just fly from Lihue to Kona, but you cannot.

When we landed in Kona we got our rental car, a red Sebring and then got on the road. We were staying at the Hapuna Beach Prince about an hour north, up the coast, from the airport. The drive was easy enough, the only confusing part was that you enter the resort on the eastern side of the roade when the beach is to the west and the resort is on the beach. Ends up the road loops under the main road.

My first impressions of the Kona coast of the Hawaii (the Big Island): Very black from the lava rock and bleak. I mean, it looked like even weeds were having a hard time growing on all of the black rock. I did find this “local-style graffiti” to be pretty interesting. People would spell things out with white rocks, which really stood out from the black lava rock.

Wedding After Party

March 20th, 2011 · No Comments

Since the wedding ended pretty early (10 p.m.), people headed back to Ho’Onani Estates for an after party. At the wedding everyone was happy and having a great time. We were drinking but no one got so drunk that they did anything crazy or embarassing. I can’t say the same is true for the after party! There was a wrestling match, drinking games, made up games, people falling asleep, people falling down, madness! I won’t really get into the details of the party, since it would be embarassing to everyone, but a good time was had. Most people left and I went to bed finally at about 3:30 a.m.!

Ho’Onani Poker

March 17th, 2011 · No Comments

At night we played poker at the front house. I played early and not very enthusiastically. I tried to gamble some Ross Dollars but it didn’t work. Finally I went all-in on a pair of twos… .. and won. Dang! I played for a while more, but was tired from the long day and went out soon. I hung around a while longer but headed up to bed at about 11:30. Dallas said he went to bed at about 1:30. I heard the poker game continued on until something like 3:30 a.m.!
