Sorry, everyone! I forgot to post these photos that I promised I’d post weeks ago. The night before Dallas and I left for Connecticut, I went to a FeedBurner reunion party at De Cero. About 13 of us made it out. We expected more, but it was a busy week for many people. A lot of people who were there I’d seen often at the Google office. Others, I hadn’t seen for a long time, more than a year. Enough time for Adil to have a baby even! As per the FeedBurner tradition, we ordered a ton of guacamole and platters of assorted tacos. It was a fun time and something we’ll have to repeat.

Thursday night was TECH Cocktail. Since its inception, I’ve gone to every TECH Cocktail event in Chicago except maybe one or two. The difference with this one is that the founders, Frank and Eric, asked me to take photographs for them. Mostly of people coming in after registration and standing in front of the logoed Hollywood red carpet backdrop. If I took your photo on Thursday, go here to find it.

After about an hour or so at the door I met back up with Alden, Jessica, Justin Wardo, John, Traci and Joe, who I’d come with. I took some more candid photos but mostly just enjoyed the party at that point. Oh, and I won a $25 iTunes gift card. It’s interesting how many people I know at these events and how exactly I know them. I always see people I met through Chicagoist, people who read this site, people I did business with at FeedBurner and people from Google now too. Oh, and there are people I know just from Tech Cocktail events.

From Donuts to Urban Legend Desserts to Don King, All in One Day

August 30th, 2007 · 6 Comments

Donut CartYesterday was one of the craziest days at work. I should have known it was going to be an odd day when in the morning a woman with a donut cart showed up. It was her first day in the office and as a way to introduce herself they had her walk around with a utility cart full of Dunkin Donuts and hand them out to people. I guess that’s one creative way to get to know someone, although I think everyone is just going to call her Donut Girl and not her real name.

At lunch time I was going down our food buffet. It was build your own pasta day with a few types of pasta, a few meats like italian sausage and meatballs, and two sauces. I rounded the corner to the dessert area and started freaking out. There was the Holy Grail. The Sasquatch. The Loch Ness Monster. The urban legend of desserts that we’d heard of but never seen.

Rice Krispy Treats With Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

To rewind a bit, when we were in NY for those first two weeks after we joined Google, I bumped into a former coworker of mine from another job. I asked her what the Chicago office has that no other office has and she said “Rice Krispy treats with Reese’s Peanut Butter cups.” Well, then we couldn’t wait to get to the Chicago office! But then? When we got there? Often we had Rice Krispy treats at lunch and there were definitely Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups around, but not together. Never ever. Jeff, in particular, got pretty obsessed with the thought of Rice Krispy treats with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and he’s not even in the Chicago office. When he visited, though, he was so disappointed. Anyway, this dessert concept became like an urban legend around the Chicago office. And then yesterday? There it was.

Don King & Rachelle

Final addition to my crazy day: Around 4 or so I was sitting there and Fitz said “Hey, Rachelle, Don King is on the way here. Can you stick around and take some photos?” Let me think: “Hell yeh!” I’ve only shared my other photographs internally, but here’s one of Don & I.

This was our last night out as FeedBurner. We rented some space at Carnivale and gorged ourselves on Latin food and drinks. Dick toasted each employee. The toasts started out completely proper and nice but by the end of the night they were more like roasts! The party was fun and everyone is excited for the future, but there was still that twinge of sadness that our little group is all grown up.

Later on we went to Carol’s Pub because it was Thursday and that means karaoke at Carol’s! paulbaker wrote my name down for a song, but luckily I escaped around 1 a.m. before my turn came up.

The rest of my photos from the night are on FeedBurner’s Flickr photostream.
