Comedy Central Presents.. RachelleB.com

Comedy Central Presents, Hudson Theater, Times Square, Manhattan

I managed to get my hands on 4 passes to a taping of Comedy Central Presents, so Mark, Eleanor, Jeannette and I went up last night to see it. This is the program on Comedy Central that features stand-up comedians.

It was interesting to see the behind the scenes work that goes into taping the show. On our pass it warned that since we’d be on camera we should dress “hip” but that we shouldn’t wear white, shorts, t-shirts or hats.. but aren’t t-shirts and hats what all the “hipsters” wear? I guess they wanted hip, but not that hip. The show was filmed at the Hudson Theater, the second oldest theater in New York. We had to wait on line outside for about an hour. When we got in the crowd was prepped. The emcee was really funny and warned us to turn cell phones off, etc. He also got us warmed up and ready to laugh. The comedians that came on, Bob Oschack and Paul Mercurio, were both pretty funny. I’ve seen worse, I’ve seen better.

2 Years

Times Square
Times Square, Manhattan

As of today I’ve been living in Manhattan for 2 years. Some days I get wrapped up in the excitement of the city and it feels like I just moved here. Some days when everything goes right I feel like I’ve conquered it and I could live here forever. Other days the pace and the attitude gets me down and I want to flee. Everyone here has this love/hate relationship with New York. Here are some posts from the days when I first moved here:

- On my first celebrity siting (Kurt Loder) the first night I moved here.
- On New York City kicking my ass.
- On New York City’s idea of Mexican food.

Saying Goodbye to Age 27

After being out til 3:30 a.m. the night before, Jess and I got up at 9:30 a.m. to go to Times Square and stand on the TKTS line. To celebrate my last day as age 27 we got tickets for Stomp and made plans to go to dinner. To say I was hungover from the night before would be quite an understatement. And to be in that condition in Times Square is pure torture. But luckily the TKTS line moved quickly and the ticket man was some sort of comedian who made me laugh.

When we got back to Jessica’s apartment, she and her roommate prepared lunch for all of us. I cut two tomatoes and then passed out on the couch trying to get some sleep before the show. Susan made and grilled some pretty amazing cheeseburgers and Jess made a salad and sliced veggies for the burgers. Big thanks to them for making me lunch and helping me get over the results of last night’s drinking binge. After lunch Jess gave me a coffee maker as a birthday gift. I was just mentioning the other day that I may have finally come to terms with my coffee consumption. You see, I never drank coffee until I moved to New York 2 years ago. In the beginning it was only now and then and if you asked me I’d say I didn’t consider myself a coffee drinker. Somehow things escalated into drinking the free coffee at work every morning from paper cups to bringing in my own mug to use to craving it on the weekend mornings. Thanks, Jess!! Now I will never be tired and crabby! Heh, yeh right.

Stomp
Stomp Stage, Orpheum Theater, East Village, Manhattan

Stomp. It’s not like the hip show to see right now.. it’s been out for about 8 years. Back when it first came out and was big and everywhere I remember living in WI and thinking how great it would be to see it. So yesterday I finally saw it and it was fantastic. Everyday objects being used to make sounds and to have these sounds composed into “music” and to have the “music” orchestrated and performed by up to 10 people on the stage at once is amazing. There is just enough “music” with just enough “dance” sprinkled with satisfying helping of humor. If you haven’t seen it already, go!

For dinner, Jessica & Susan and I met up with Mark & Wendy and Jeannette & Yvan at one of my favorite restaurants in the East Village, Gnocco. The food is delicious and the waiters are all from Italy and very personable .. even if they make lame-o jokes that you don’t really get. Jeannette & Yvan and Mark & Wendy all gave me gifts that support my digital photography habit. Thanks to everyone for a great dinner and for the thoughtful birthday gifts!! Age 27 can get the hell out! Here comes 28!

A Night Out, A Charity Walk, and Dogs

Going out until almost 2 a.m. the night before the big cancer walk probably wasn’t the most responsible thing to do, but Andy and Michele were in town and we really were having a good time at Avenue A Sushi and then hopping around bars and clubs in the East Village.

Revlon Run/Walk for Women
Revlon Run/Walk for Women, Times Square, Manhattan

Saturday morning I jumped out of bed with only a few hours of sleep and met up with Jeannette, Jessica, Yvan and 55,000 other people in Times Square for the 6th Annual Revlon Run/Walk for Women. Nothing like sleep walking 5 kilometers! Just kidding. Jess & I walked and Jeannette ran. Yvan was there for .. uh.. moral support. This was the biggest walk/run for charity that I’ve ever participated in. After the confetti bomb went off, signalling the start of the race, it was a good 15 minutes before we could even move to begin walking. The entire walk was like a huge mob of people invading Central Park. Amazingly, we did bump into a few people that we knew who we hadn’t planned to meet up with and didn’t know were even participating beforehand. Thanks again to everyone who contributed to the cause on my behalf.

May 3, 2003. Revlon Run/Walk for Women. Jessica & Rachelle.

Participating in memory of my Grandma Norder and my Grandma Bowden, both cancer victims.

Jeannette stripping down, getting ready to run.

Pissed Women was the best walking group name. Their shirts said “Pissed Women Kicking Cancer’s Ass!” Second runner up for best group name: Boobs on the Run.

Confetti blast signalling the start of the race.

Finally starting to walk, 15 minutes after the start of the race.

Finally getting to the start line a few minutes later.

Walking through Central Park. The sun finally began to poke through the clouds making it a beautiful day.

I’m happy to say that I now am in love with the nail salon that screwed us over the other day. Jess & I each got a pedicure and a manicure there Saturday afternoon and they only charged us $15. That place is so affordable it’s rediculous. And so busy. Probably since it was recently written up in Jane Magazine. I don’t know if I should tell you what it’s called.. because then you’re all going to rush in on our new find and make it all impossible to get an appointment and make them think that because of their popularity they can raise the prices! The owner of the salon has this little dirty whitish poodle-ish dog in the salon. I would normally hate a little annoying dog like this, but this one.. she had some ATTITUDE. So funny. She ran around in the salon and out on the sidewalk chasing much bigger dogs and barking like there was no tomorrow. And when she got scolded for it she acted like if she could speak English she would tell the world to “F OFF!”. As I waited for Jess to finish up, this little firecracker and I snuggled up and read some magazines in the warm sun. Afterwards, we ate at Kate’s Joint, a vegetarian restuarant filled with babies and stereotypically wacky East Village characters. Hipsters and hippies. The East Village is oozing with them.

Drew, the 3 legged pitbull from BARC

Sunday, Eleanor and Jeannette and I volunteered at the Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition (BARC) through New York Cares. I’d volunteered at BARC, a no-kill shelter, once before – last year. It was there today that I met Drew, an BARCaffectionate 3-legged pitbull with a tendancy to sit down instead of walk, and Freddy, a friendly mutt with a reluctancy to walk away from the shelter. After a few hours of dog walking and a call to Masako, who used to live in Williamsburg, Eleanor & LucyEleanor, Jeannette and I had brunch at Oznnot’s Dish, where I ordered something that reminded me of a a breakfast my mom used to make. She used to take a cup and cut out the center of slices of toast. Then she would fry an egg in the middle. My meal at Oznot’s was good, but not as good as the memory of mom’s, of course. I’m exhausted from this weekend. I think I’m going to nap until Six Feet Under comes on.
