Blue Shoes and Happiness by Alexander McCall Smith

Each one of these books is like a love letter to Botswana. The author was born in Africa and returned back after law school in Scotland. He co-founded and taught law at the University of Botswana. He also cowrote The Criminal Law of Botswana, the country’s only book on its legal system.

I read this all on wikipedia, but I think this line of his entry is the best: “Former American First Lady Laura Bush is a big fan of Smith’s, as is Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.” Hilarious.

Anyway, this was the 7th book in the series and was par for the course.

The Full Cupboard of Life by Alexander McCall Smith

Fifth book in The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series. Just a bit less than halfway through, if McCall Smith doesn’t write any more books! This series is really easy to read. Kind of mindless. I enjoy being taken away to daily life in an African community where names, customs and everyday life are all different than what we’re used to here. I hope it’s true to what it’s really like to live in Botswana. McCall Smith grew up in Africa and lived in Botswana for a number of years, so I’m going to choose to believe it’s pretty honest. When I went to Wikipedia just now to look that up, I noticed this line at the end of his profile: “Former American First Lady Laura Bush is a big fan of Smith’s, as is Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.” Hilarioius!

Tears of the Giraffe by Alexander McCall Smith

This is the second in the series. I liked it. I noticed that on the HBO show, The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, they changed a few things from the books. Also, each episode is like a whole book. I keep thinking I should let the shows queue up on our DVR but not watch them til I’ve read more books. Then again, with the changes, it’s not like the show is completely giving the books away.
