The Wire

Warning: Spoilers

In 2009 I got Dallas the complete series of The Wire on DVD for his birthday. I’d never seen the show but had heard great things about it. Dallas had seen 3 of the 5 seasons and had always wanted to watch the rest. When we got the DVDs we powered through and watched the first 2 or 3 seasons but then for some reason stopped. Earlier this year we started back up and we finished the entire show a couple months ago.

I have to say, I agree with the 50 billion people you’ve already heard say this was like the best show ever. I loved it. The writing was superb. The acting superb. I was sad in the end to say goodbye to these people:

I loved Kima, I loved Bunk, I loved the cop turned teacher, Prez. Carver. Cedric. McNulty turned into such an idiot at the end but we all loved him anyway. Dallas teases me because I might have loved Stringer Bell just a little too much. Every time Idris Elba, the actor who played Stringer Bell, is on another show, Dallas makes sure to point him out to me. It was a sad day when Stringer Bell got shot! I almost didn’t want to keep watching, but of course, I did. Omar.. OMAR! What a badass! Love him. And Bubbles. Poor Bubbles. So many heatbreaking moments with him.

As the series goes, I loved the first season where we got to know everyone. And then Kima got shot. I was sucked IN! I think the second season was my least favorite… with the shipyards. The third season, Hamsterdam, was great. I think it was the fourth season I liked the best: with the school kids. I got so involved in each of their stories. I was pulling for each of them and Prez, the teacher. The fifth season was mostly politics and journalists. And it tied everything all back together.

I’d seen this graphic years ago, before I’d seen the show, and of course I didn’t really “get” it. Now… looking back at it… so awesome.

Finally, here’s an awesome clip of the 100 greatest quotes from The Wire:

If you have not seen this show, you must get ON it! I believe it’s streaming on HBO Go. You can get it on disc from Netflix. I bought our set discounted on Half.com. We even caught a few episodes, unedited, on DirecTV. Figure it out and watch it. No excuses!

Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly by Anthony Bourdain

finished 08.30.11

In 2004 I came across a copy of A Cook’s Tour by Anthony Bourdain. I loved the book. I’m sure I knew who Bourdain was before this time, but this my first solid memory. I think I’d heard of his popular book, Kitchen Confidential, but it was Cook’s Tour that I read.

Since that time I’ve become a big fan of Bourdain. Dallas and I watch No Reservations on TV all the time. Bourdain spoke at Google once and he was one of my favorite speakers I saw in my time there.

Anyway, I finally went back to the book that started it all, Kitchen Confidential. Actually, I got it on audiobook and listened while exercising. Bourdain reads the book, which is really cool. I thought this was a great book.

If you are between the ages of 0 and 85

May 28th, 2011 · No Comments

I keep seeing this commercial for anyone between the ages of 0 and 85 to call the number displayed and get life insurance. Age zero. Is that still in the womb? Also, why cut it off at 85?

Daylight Savings Time

I could not sleep for some reason last night so I went out into the living room to watch TV. When I displayed the guide, this really messed with my half-asleep/insomniac head.

Marc Burger

August 2nd, 2010 · No Comments

I’ve mentioned before how sometimes my coworkers and I go to the fancy Macy’s food court for lunch. I’d been to Rick Bayless’ Frontera Fresco and I’d been to Takashi Yagihashi’s noodle place, so one day back in May I decided to try out Marcus Samuelsson’s Marc Burger.

I ordered the turkey burger with cumin, chives, and chipotle mayonnaise. It was good but not like mind blowing. I thought the garlic and cracked pepper fries were great and the homemade spicy ketchup was even better.

It was fun to visit Marcus Samuelsson’s restaurant while watching Top Chef Masters on TV. And even better when he went on to win a few weeks later! Now I need to visit his high-end restaurant in Chicago, C-House.
