Seen around New York City: Shady guys asking if you smoke cigarettes and selling them discreetly out of their bags and pockets at reduced prices. This behavior is a result of last month’s cigarette tax hike which raised the price of cigarettes to over $7 per pack and has caused people to find alternate sources of distribution such as internet purchases, buying them on the street like drugs, crossing state lines, and going to Indian Reservations.

The state tax department says that I owe them a big chunk of change. My tax man says that I owe nothing and that he’s going to get me a return even larger than the return he first calculated in March. Let the games begin!

After talking with and being on hold with the NY State Tax board for over and hour, I’m as angry as ever. At both them and the CPA firm that prepared my taxes. I was supposed to get a decent sized return back and it’s turning out that I’m having to pay in an amount over double the size of the return that I had coming. Warning: everyone better stay away from me today.

3 hours after I began filling out the forms to file my taxes online, I was ready to collect every paper and receipt scattered around my room and dump it on H&R Block. Multiple state filings aren’t available online at hrblock.com or turbotax.com. grrrr
