Stephanie’s Visit to Chicago

August 20th, 2009 · 8 Comments

On Friday night, Richard, Amanda, Jessica, and Stephanie came down to visit and we had dinner at Marcello’s Father and Son Restaurant nearby our house in Logan Square. The purpose of the trip was to drop Steph off to stay with us for a weekend in Chicago. This is something that we like to do every year.

On Friday night after dinner I was really tired from 2 days of work meetings and parties so we just relaxed at home and watched a movie. None of our Netflix movies were appropriate to watch with a 13-year-old and most of the movies Dallas owns were things Steph wasn’t interested in. The one movie she recognized that was rated PG-13 or less was The Simpsons Movie, so we put that in.

On Saturday I didn’t really have any plans for us until 6 p.m. that night. We had breakfast and planned our day. For lunch we went to Irazu Costa Rican restaurant. We decided to get chifrijo for an appetizer. This is a black bean dip mixed with fried pork, sauteed veggies, and rice, served with chips. It was delicious. I could have just eaten this for my meal.

We also ordered shakes. I got the Avena (oatmeal) shake and Steph got the banana shake. Both were delicious. I don’t know what it is about the shakes at Irazu, but they’re not thick and heavy at all. I like them because they’re light and delicious and don’t feel like lead in your belly or make you so stuffed you can’t eat your dinner. And they’re not so sweet that it’s like drinking dessert.

Here’s Steph looking over her menu. I don’t know how she got to be 13 years old already! Or when she got so pretty. Not cute. But really pretty. I flash back to when she was born and when she learned to write and how she wanted to name her cat Pikachu. How I kept forgetting she could read and she’d sit behind me and try to read my email on a visit home. A couple years ago when she first stayed with me she was begging me to buy her something out of a gumball machine. And now this.

I also don’t know what kind of mascara she is using, but look at those lashes. I must find out and buy it.

Steph’s only 13, which is still young…. she’s going into 8th grade in a few weeks. .. but there are a lot of things we can talk about as though I was talking to a friend of mine, my age, which is kind of fun.

Look! No braces!

I decided to get the pepito sandwich. Again. This is the rib eye steak sandwich with sauteed onions, cheese, pinto beans and Lizano sauce. I also got avocado on mine because I am obsessed with avocado lately. Steph got the same sandwich but instead of avocado she got jalepenos on her sandwich. Awesome. I love this sandwich and could eat it every day. PLUS? It is only $4.95!

There was a slight incident at the table behind us with some guy who passed out and 911 was called. The fire truck and the ambulance showed up to wake him and make sure he was ok. After that drama we headed back on the bus downtown.

Another bus transfer later and we were at the Adler Planetarium. Steph had never been to a planetarium before. I think she found the exhibits to be a bit dry (I tend to agree with her there), but she agreed that the show in the dome was pretty cool.

From the planetarium we took a cab, Steph’s first cab ride, to Navy Pier. After a quick ice cream treat we saw the acrobatic show Cirque Shanghai. Here’s a photo of Steph before the show.

How did Steph keep her hair looking so good all day? It was hot and I felt a mess.

The show was pretty amazing. The stunts were crazy. Juggling crazy things while balancing in pyramids and dancing and leaping through the air, hoops and contortions in ways the body should not bend. At one point this chick was balancing on one foot, tip toed, on the top of a guy’s head! Unlike the Cirque show I saw in Las Vegas, which had a storyline, this show was just music and routines.. which was fine. Just different… more for the audience.. which was Navy Pier, all ages, and very affordably priced.

Steph said without hesitation that she thought the show was “Awesome” so I take that as a winner. I wasn’t sure if she’d want to go to the show, but luckily she liked it.

After the show we took a cab home, Steph’s second cab ever. We had dinner at Taqueria Moran, by my house. Steph commented how everything on the menu was in Spanish and how billboards in our neighborhood are all Spanish. To be honest, I’m so used to seeing Spanish, I don’t really find it odd til someone else points it out to me.

On Sunday we went to the Logan Square Farmers Market in the morning. I had a couple errands to run and then we got lunch at the Whole Foods food court. Steph got barbecue chicken pizza (the first time she’s ever had it) and I got a turkey burger. We shared a 365 cola, made with cane sugar and natural ingredients, not high fructose corn syrup and no caffeine. Yum! We did a bit of shopping and headed home. Before we knew it, it was time to drive up to Milwaukee and the weekend was over.

I always have a good time when Steph visits each year. We don’t spend much time alone or talking so it’s good to get to know her better. I also enjoy taking her around town and exposing her to things she’s never done before. Even things we take for granted every day in Chicago. So far I think she’s had fun too. I think she likes getting away from her family for a couple days and spending time in the big city.

Went by fast, but it was fun!

Taqueria Moran

We went to Taqueria Moran on the day we moved into our condo in Logan Square and were happy to find out it was both cheap and delicious. The restaurant is located a block from our place. When the weather turned cold we went so often that we had to call it quits on Mexican food for a while. We’re back at the taqueria and hopefully won’t overdose again, since it’s getting warm out and we can go to more restaurants in the neighborhood. Taqueria Moran rocks. If you’re in the area, it’s a definitely a reliable choice.

Ice Late

Ice Late, Taqueria Moran, Logan Square, Chicago

When we first moved to Logan Square, this “Ice Late” sign irritated me.. but now? Not so much. For one, the food at Taqueria Moran, where the sign is posted, is fabulous. We eat there at least once per week. And for two, “whatever.” At least they spelled Pina Colada right! Still there are multiple “Ice Late” signs in the windows. I kind of want to just steal them and add a “d” and a “t” where needed.

I’m Going To Marry My Kitchen

November 16th, 2008 · 7 Comments

On Friday night I was back at the Village Tap to celebrate Danny’s last day of work. He drove out to the suburbs every day for years for a programming job he didn’t enjoy and just had enough. It will be interesting to see if he decides to do something completely different or if he’ll end up back in a tech job. It’s a brave move to leave a job where you keep getting a raise to pursue a dream interest. I wish him the best!

Logan Square, Chicago

On Saturday I spent the morning baking for the first time since we moved. I must say, I love my new kitchen. There is so much cupboard and counter space. In our last apartment we were always jamming things in where they didn’t really fit and in this one we have so much space that some cupboards are empty. We cook from online recipes a lot so it’s awesome to have enough space for the computer and not be afraid that I’m going to dump flour on the keyboard like I always used to fear. And I love how many lighting options there are in the kitchen. I can turn on the drop lights above the island, or the recessed lighting in the ceiling or the under cabinet lights or the light above the sink, or any combination of them. Oh, and the power outlets? They’re everywhere.

Chocolate Chip Banana Muffin

Yesterday, I made chocolate chip banana muffins for us to eat for breakfast and Laura’s Cranberry Bars to bring to a dinner party. I’m still slightly obsessed with that recipe but I need to find a new one for this holiday season!

Laura’s Cranberry Streusel Shortbread Bars

Today I got up early and prepped a roast and a bunch of vegetables to cook all day for dinner tonight (recipe here). Danny came over and we watched the Bears/Packers game. Yay Packers (37-7 win)! We ordered lunch from Taqueria Moran and have just been relaxing at home. I made a 3:30 p.m. beer run to Foremost Liquors and I saw the first snow of this season, but luckily it was only flurries.

Cooking and having people over, cooking, and having our TV hooked up on Friday is starting to make this place feel more like home even if we do have a lot to organize yet and loose ends with the developer.

Getting Settled

November 1st, 2008 · 10 Comments

I’m up kind of early and not motivated to start organizing and unpacking yet. Yesterday after we moved in we had a lot of house calls.

The Latino dry waller who worked on this building came by looking for our developer, David. He had 6 containers of homemade salsa that his wife made and I guess periodically he gives them to David because he knows how much he likes it. David wasn’t around, so he put the salsa in the fridge of the one remaining condo unit in our building, but not before giving me one of them, which was really nice. The dry waller had his adorable daughter with him. She was maybe 6 years old, but she wouldn’t tell me her name. Too shy. Me: “cómo te llamas?” Her: Blank stare.

Later on we went and ate at Taqueria Moran, a nearby inexpensive Mexican restaurant. I was hoping/dreading that this place would be good because we’ll be walking past it a few times every day. If it’s good, score! But then I’ll want to go all the time. I love Mexican food. Verdict? It was good. Dallas loved the carnitas. After lunch we went across the street to the Mexican supermarket. I wanted to get some good chips for the salsa we were given. Also just wanted to check it out. Loads of fresh produce. Hopefully it’s a good quality because it’s really nearby our place. Just looked, it got poor reviews on Yelp. We also stopped into Panaderia La Central, the Mexican bakery, that’s right there. I’d gotten sweets there one time with Jen and Jess when we first viewed the condo, but Dallas had never been. We didn’t get anything, but had fun looking.

Back to unpacking. The Comcast guy came over next to get our internet service up and running. Then the plumber came over to work on finishing up the steam shower (!!) and David the Developer (groan) came over to check in on things. At night, after trick-or-treating Chad helped us move a few more things that we didn’t trust with the movers. Looooong day.

Today we’re expecting to see David again. An electrician is coming over to finish up a few things, a cleaning person is coming over because there’s a lot of dust and dirt on things from construction still, and I think the painter might be coming to take care of some sealing on the stairs. Oh, and the Direct TV is getting transferred over today. My parents are arriving in a few hours to help us out over the weekend. On Monday we have “the trimmer” coming to finish up some things in the bedroom that we had the developer change in the last week before we moved in. Our place is 99% complete but there are still some things on a list that need to be completed with the developer. Hopefully he’s cool and follows through on all he has promised to finish working on.

Now that you read all that, I guess I can show you a few photos of the place! These were taken when I came over before the movers, so it was completely empty. The condo is two floors, like our last apartment was. On the top is the kitchen, dining room, powder room, and living room. The bottom floor is a den/rec room/second living room, spare bedroom that will most likely be an office, bathroom, laundry, master bedroom and master bathroom. We have a private patio space as well as a shared deck on top of the garage. Oh, and a parking space in the garage. Right now our bikes are parked there!
