Mark Zuckerberg’s Keynote

SXSW - Mark Zuckerberg Keynote
Mark Zuckerberg & Sarah Lacey, SXSW, Austin, TX

So, about Zuckerberg. I keep getting asked… Yes, I was there, 5th row, center when Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was interviewed by Sarah Lacey. Yes, it was bad. I think actually being in the audience you could feel the swell and then the explosion. Others have told me that they watched the video and it didn’t seem like a big deal, but I think when you are there in person you hear and see a lot that the video didn’t get. People cursing the interviewer, FaceBook developers talking back to users at the mic, audience members in the back yelling “Talk about something interesting.” All of it lead up to the moment when the crowd erupted and cheered and yelled “YOU SUCK!” at the interviewer.

I think part of the problem was that no one knew who Sarah Lacey was, no one knew she was a journalist with BusinessWeek, no one knew that she knew Mark Zuckerberg and wrote a book about him. They just saw her pimping her book and telling personal stories about Zucks and were like “who the hell is this lady?” 2 minutes of intro in the beginning could have solved some of that. Of course it didn’t help that she also seemed really flirty and cut him off a lot and didn’t really ask questions as much as make statements a bunch of times. Also, Zuckerberg isn’t known for talking a lot or being a good interview. In the end it was the perfect storm.

In six panels, this is pretty much what happened:

Yogurt Parfait
Yogurt Parfait at the Hyatt, Austin, TX

Each day for breakfast I got a yogurt parfait from Perks, the coffee shop in the Hyatt in Austin, and it was bleh. Ok, but not great. Then one day I ordered this yogurt parfait from the hotel restaurant and it was fabulous. And so pretty to photograph.

After dinner we headed over to another party. Chicagoist‘s sister site Austinist was hosting a party at PureVolume Ranch. The party was from 8pm – 4am. We got there at about 11, just before a band called White Denim went on. The party had all the free Lone Star beer you could drink, which is why the band is a little fuzzy to me. Especially since I’d already been to Google’s free beer party and had a couple beers at dinner. I remember them being really energetic. Justin and I stood on the side of the stage and had a great view. I remember talking to a guy who was in a band called Voxtrot who said that they played Pitchfork and Chicagoist wrote about them. Then I remember texting our music editor about it. After White Denim finished their set we called it a night. It was time.

Mekong River on 6th

Mekong River on 6th
Mekong River, Austin, TX

After the Google party we decided to get some dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant nearby, Mekong River. (Check out this funny note that Matt photographed in their entryway.) Mekong River turned out to be the NSFW menu jackpot – Skirts on Fire, Tongue Toaster, Spicy Landlord, Spicy Boss, Double Sensation, Secretary Holiday, Saigon Temptation, Saigon Mistress, Rated-R Shrimp, Ambassador’s Honey. Honestly. These were all names of entrees on Mekong River’s menu. Not even making this up!

I had a chicken dish that I don’t see on the online menu but that I believe was called Aftermoon Chicken. It was basically a rice and chicken dish with a sweet honey sauce. We had Tiger and Singha beers. At the end of dinner I also had a Vietnamese iced coffee, which is something I used to get in New York’s Chinatown all the time and haven’t had since then. It was a nice treat.

On Saturday afternoon I went to a few more panels – 10 Things We’ve Learned at 37Signals presented by fellow Chicagoan Jason Fried and Behind the Scenes at the Onion News Network.

That night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. was Google’s SXSW party. On Sched we saw that more than 650 people said they were going to attend and internally we knew that Light Bar would only fit about 300. This resulted in a line all the way down the block and around the corner for about two more blocks. Luckily, we just had to show our Google employee badges and we could get right in. That’s how we roll.

The downstairs of Light Bar was like a club with club music and a fake waterfall and all that cheesiness, but up top was an open rooftop bar, which was really nice. That’s where we hung out the most. All of the drinks were free and I drank Shiner Bock until it was all out and then drank a bunch of Lone Star beer. It was a good time. I admit I had major spring fever in Austin and was just enjoying the weather, being outside and probably drinking far more beer than I should. Oh well!
