In June 2007 John and Susan moved to San Francisco. We went to their going away party and it was a great time. Shortly after that – like a week later – Allison moved to San Francisco. I was stuck in New York for work and couldn’t make it to her going away party. I think John and Susan’s party was the last time I saw Allison in Chicago. In all the times I traveled to California when I worked at Google I was only able to meet up with Allison one time, back in August 2007. I think she’s been to Chicago since, but I was out of town. Anyway, what I’m trying to get it is that we haven’t seen Allison much since she moved so we were really excited that she was in town this weekend.. and that she was bringing her boyfriend, Herm, with whom she just celebrated their 1 year dating anniversary.

For dinner we went to Piazza Bella, which I thought was fabulous. Up til a week ago we lived not even a block away from this restaurant, but we hardly ever went. Afterward we went to The Village Tap, which of course I’ve been to billion times. For some reason there was an Irish Car Bomb throw down between Trent and Herm. Everyone did 3 of them each and in the end, with the aid of video, it was determined that Trent drank them the fastest. It was fantastic to see Allison again and she was a great sport. When you get together old friends with a new boyfriend…. let’s just say that there was a lot of story telling going on. Herm was great. Dishing it, taking it, fitting right in. Allison is doing really well for herself out in San Francisco but I must admit selfishly that we miss having her around.

Cubs Win the NL Central Title

Killian

On Friday night we all went to Mac’s to help celebrate Liz’s last day “working for the man.” Liz has grown her clientèle so much that she now is able to work as a therapist, full-time, on her own. Quite an accomplishment. Liz’s specialties are kids and adolescents, eating disorders and substance abuse. If you’re needing any help, check her out at SuranCounseling.com.

Also on Friday, the Cubs played Cincinnati and won. Milwaukee played San Diego and lost. Which means that the Cubs clinched the NL Central title. I think this might have been the happiest day in Killian’s life, including the day he met or proposed to Liz. Kidding, but he and his brother Malachy and pretty much everyone in the bar was freaking out. It was pandemonium for a bit there. Crazy.

Finally, John and Susan were in town and met up with us at Mac’s. I was able to meet up with Susan on one of my business trips to California, but I hadn’t seen John since they moved to San Francisco, so it was nice to spend time with them.

Finally Seeing Friends in San Francisco

August 24th, 2007 · 2 Comments

San Francisco City Hall
San Francisco City Hall, San Francisco

I’ve been in San Francisco and Mountain View since yesterday for work. Last night, I was lucky enough to meet up with Susan and Allison, who I haven’t seen since they moved to San Francisco. Other times I’ve been out here for work I’ve either been to busy with work stuff, or had not been staying near San Francisco, or it just didn’t work out. Trent was at a conference in San Jose and also came up to San Francisco and went out with us.

After some confusion with Susan and I going to a restaurant only to find out that Trent and Allison were in a different neighborhood and already had eaten, we ended up having drinks and dinner at Enrico’s in North Beach. The food was really good – we had goat cheese-stuffed mushrooms, oysters, and a fig and Gorgonzola pizza – but the service was crap. We repeatedly had to ask for a waiter, then for the stuff we ordered and then, in the end, for our check. Still it was fun to hang out outside and to see Allison and Susan again. Just like old times in Hawaii!

A few more photos from the quick trip are here.

Today John and Susan leave to start their drive out to San Francisco where they’re moving. On Saturday night their friend Jay hosted a going away party for them. I came down from Wisconsin early and Dallas flew standby on an earlier flight from Dallas so he could attend too. So glad we made it. It was a ton of fun. And there were so many people there! Everyone loves John & Susan. Jay has a 3-story condo with a deck on each story. I thought for sure that one of those were gonna come down, with the number of people on each.

I’m excited for John & Susan to start out on this new chapter of their lives, but we sure will miss them! I don’t even want to start to think about Allison’s going away party this Friday. She’s moving to San Francisco too!

Live Band Karaoke :: Quencher’s, Bucktown, Chicago

After Hachi’s Kitchen we went to Quencher’s. I’m pretty sure I’m the only person in Chicago that hadn’t been there yet. Everyone always talks about how great it is and it is. We had a great time. They have so many beers there from all over the world. I was pushing my luck by asking if they had the Tahitian beer Hinano (they didn’t), but we were able to get Steinlager, a beer from New Zealand that we drink in Hawaii. That night at Quencher’s happened to be live band karaoke night. I had been drinking for more than 6 hours at that point and was pretty drunk, but not so much as I got on stage and sang, which is a good thing. At the end of the night Susan said we should all pick a song, practice for a week, and reconvene next Thursday night. The next morning I thought, “we’re not really going to do that.. ” but then I got an email from Allison and on the bottom it said “6 more days…. ” I’m in trouble!
