It hasn’t been since December that I’ve walked past the Sun Times Destruction/Trump Tower Construction site on a daily basis. And it hasnt been since November that I posted an update on it. I used to go by every day, most times twice/day, and was able to notice each little step in the building that was accomplished. This weekend I went by and it’s just like shot up, past ground level and everything. I know the building’s got a long way to go and that it’s going to grow so much taller, but it was amazing to me to see how big it was already!
Check here to see all of my photos of the Sun Times building as it was torn down and the Trump Tower as it was constructed.

Construction Worker in a Manhole, River North, Chicago
When I first saw this guy I thought, “Holy crap! Is he ok? What should I do? Did he get hit by a car? Is anyone around that could help me?” and then I realized he was a construction worker from the Trump site and was reaching down into a manhole to do some work.

Wabash Avenue, River North, Chicago
Wabash Avenue north of Wacker and the Wabash Avenue bridge over the Chicago River are now open again, as of last Friday. The section of the street next to the Trump Tower project was closed while crews ripped down the Sun-Times Building and rebuilt the viaduct.
The roadwork included street resurfacing, new sidewalks, ornamental streetlights, landscaped medians, and a new traffic signal on the north side of the bridge. Total cost? $8 mil.
Keep in mind, if you’re thinking about driving on the new street: Southbound lanes are all set, but northbound lanes will be limited to one lane until late 2007 because of the Trump Tower construction.

I don’t know why it cracks me up that these bags of sand around the Trump construction area are called and sold as “Tubesand”. It seems like one of those things that’s so simple.. and whoever thought of it is a billionaire now.
Also, I noticed that they have a lot of the granite tiles used at IBM plaza stacked up around the site. I’m sure they’ll be fitting them back into place as they continue to finish Wabash Ave.

Long gone is the wooden walkway that was constructed in February to get over Kinzie Street when Wabash Ave was ripped open. The sidewalk is complete. I can’t say I’ll really miss that wooden platform. It was just a place for graffiti and homeless beggers to gather.. and for me to slip and fall.. which I did several times. The only good thing was that because it was elevated it offered a good view of the construction going on. Now, with Wabash Avenue close to complete, the real action is going on “across the street.”
From the Michigan Avenue bridge (bottom photo) you can see what looks like a couple stories of building. Maybe I’ll have to switch up my walk to work so I can get this view more often.
btw, if you Google “trump construction” this site is #1.
