Summer of Rachelle Ideal Lunch: Discount Sushi

July 1st, 2008 · No Comments

What could be better than sitting outside in the dappled shade eating half-priced maki on a perfect summer day? Doing it on a random Tuesday afternoon when most of the world is at work, I suppose. Tank Sushi is open for lunch so I decided to try it out. I must admit, though, only the Tank Maki was half priced. The Hawaiian I just had to try, even though it meant paying full price.

Tank Maki: Sake, hamachi, jalapeno, scallion topped with strawberry, wasabi mayo & edamame.

Hawaiian: Soft shell crab, masago mayo, chili sauce, cilantro, scallions, cucumber & avocado topped with kiwi & seared scallops. With unagi sauce.

The last photo is vegetable and pork gyoza dumplings with ginger soy and honey-wasabi sauces.

Summer of Rachelle Reflection

June 27th, 2008 · 9 Comments

Yesterday I noticed that when I sit on the deck I can see my reflection in the door. I’ve spent a lot of time doing this: reading in the sun on our deck surrounded by flowers. It’s awesome.

Erin wondered last night if I could really comprehend the contrast in my life now and how it was a year and two years ago when I was so busy I could barely see straight. I was overwhelmed mentally and physically. And now my health mentally and physically have improved so much, I can’t even say. I’m exercising way more than I have in the past years. Mentally, I think I just needed a break. These days my big decisions are “should I get a pedicure today or tomorrow?” and “what should I have for lunch?”

I know that the Summer of Rachelle won’t last forever. Dallas pointed out yesterday when I was whining about some possible work, that it’s not the Life of Rachelle, just the Summer. I know that, so I’m just trying to enjoy each moment of what’s left.

Vodka Lemonade, Village Tap, Roscoe Village, Chicago

On Friday night I invited people to come out to Village Tap for some drinks & dinner. I then declared that vodka lemonade is the official Summer of Rachelle cocktail. Can you think of a more summery drink? About a dozen people showed up and most of them had at least one of these signature cocktails.

The Tightest Pants in MLB

June 2nd, 2008 · 4 Comments

Alfonso Soriano, Wrigley Field, Chicago

You heard it here. Soriano, left field, from the bleacher seats. Kate and I both agree, he’s got the tightest pants ever. The thing I didn’t realize about Soriano is the level of interaction he has with the fans in the bleachers. He turns around a lot and acknowledges them and makes hand signals and throws a lot of balls into the stands. Makes up for that ball he dropped right in front of us. Oh, and some other good plays and the home run he made also make up for that. Cubs beat the Rockies 5-3 and swept them in the series. It was also their first undefeated homestand of at least seven games since 1970.

Wrigley Field, Chicago

Thanks to Paul Baker and Kate for inviting me to the game. It was a great way to get the Summer of Rachelle started off on the right foot.

Oh, and walking to the field I saw this church on Addison:

Friday was the last day of my contract with Google. I’m planning on taking some time off to enjoy the summer in Chicago, before starting the job hunt. Thus, Friday night we kicked off The Summer of Rachelle by going to happy hour at the Rock Bottom Brewery‘s roof deck then heading up to Riverview for more drinks closer to home.
