On Friday, we decided to go on a winery tour and tasting. I’d noticed on this Virginia Tourism website, that there were a lot of vineyards in Virginia. I thought it’s be something good to do if it was cold outside, which it had been the two previous days.

I called around some places and the Tarara Winery sounded interesting. It turned out it was really nice outside and Tarara had some outdoor things, as well as a self-guided tour and a tasting. And they were having a jazz band play in the tasting room. Sounded good, so that’s where we went. These photos are from the “wine cave.” Here’s more on Tarara from their site:

Whitie Hubert spent 40 successful years in the construction business, but when he retired, the vineyard beckoned. Born and raised on a farm in Ohio, Whitie had spent his youth growing grapes for Welch’s Grape Juice Company with his father and brother. So in 1975, the promise of a return to viticulture led Whitie and his wife Margaret to purchase 475 acres of prime Virginia farmland nestled along the Potomac river. In 1985, they built Tarara where, today, they produce award-winning wines.

For Whitie and Margaret, sharing wine is a celebration of life, and sharing their vineyard in this set-apart place is an affirmation of all the things they love best: nature, music, art, and architecture.

Whether you choose to share their celebration at a concert by the lake on a warm summer’s eve, picking fruit with your kids in the orchards, hiking 6 miles of trails, or just tasting wines in the Winemaker’s cave, Whitie and Margaret welcome you.

This year was the 5th year that Sue and I went to Kelly and Jeff’s for Thanksgiving. This year was special because it was Tessa’s first Thanksgiving.

As always, Jeff did most of the cooking. He was in charge of the meal and we were just there to help. He brined the turkey overnight then cooked it to perfection. He also made homemade cranberry sauce, stuffing and pumpkin pies. We also had mashed potatoes with gravy, mashed rutabaga, and sweet potato casserole.

On Friday night Dallas came home and got our packing and stuff done while I went and got a rental car. We drove up to Waupaca, WI, where my parents live that night. We got in late, but it was nice to not have to spend half the day Saturday driving there. On Saturday my brother and his family came up and my Aunt Sue and cousin Dawn came over to visit. It was great to see everyone and spend some down time, off line relaxing. Sometimes I just need to be disconnected. If only it were for a week, not a day!

My parents are still working on the house. They’ve been there for about a year and have done a lot of work both inside and outside of the house. It’s looking great. Amanda was really sick but good otherwise, I think. My brother and dad and Dallas watched tons of football. Jess and Steph are both growing big. Steph is a great helper with everything. Jess is still really shy to people, but once she warms up, she talks like crazy. Having a conversation with a 3-year-old is like talking to a drunk person. It doesn’t make sense and jumps from topic to topic at random. Aunt Sue was doing well and I’ll be seeing her in a few weeks in DC. It was good to see Dawn again. I haven’t seen her or her family for a long time. Oh, and I met Dakoda for the first time. He’s a great dog. Still a puppy, but so big! He definitely doesn’t know his own strength.

On Sunday we drove back and I had to drop Dallas off at the airport. He travels a lot for work and is out in California now. It’s good to be back home, but now I’m missing everyone!

Thanksgiving Dinner, Centreville, VA

A little belated, but here are a couple images from the 4th annual Thanksgiving in Virginia festivities. Jeff made a brine and let the turkey soak overnight. Then while cooking, he put onion and a bunch of fresh herbs inside. It gave the meat a great taste and the brine kept it moist.

Besides going to Wisconsin this weekend for my mom’s birthday, I went up because my cousin Kelly and her husband Jeff were in town from Virginia for a party in their honor. Their first baby, a daughter, is due to make an appearance in early February and we’re all so excited!

Here is a movie clip I edited together of some of the youngest cousins singing some unidentifiable song (.mov, 1m9s, 1.4mb).
