Here’s a funny movie clip of Tien and Jeannette at dim sum:

With the temperature outside at 8 degrees, we opted for Vietnamese coffee instead of ice cream!

Finally we got to the parade route where we met up with Jen and Jake. Everyone there was setting off confetti bombs.

As we start to make our way to the subway to go home, no one seems to care if we walk right beside the parade. This is where we get the best photographs.

After dim sum at Jing Fong, Eleanor, Jeannette, Yvan, Tien, Shannan, Jessica and I met up with Jen and Jake on the parade route to watch the Chinese New Year festivities. What a great way to celebrate my chinese-ness, or lack there of! My goal of the day was to see some dragon dancers, which I’d never seen before. Luckily, there were several of them. Unluckily, the temperature outside was about eight degrees. After an hour standing outside I could no longer feel my extremities and my camera was whacked out so we left.

New York Transit Museum

January 19th, 2004 · 10 Comments

Yesterday Jeannette & I planned to meet up over at Tien’s for chili and football. Beforehand, Jeannette got tied up with her in-laws but Tien and I were able to go across the street to the New York Transit Museum, which turned out to be way fun.

We planned to have a football party at Tien’s Aunt’s, where he is staying while she is out of the country and while his apartment purchase goes through. Since the games didn’t start until 3 p.m., we went to the New York Transit museum in the afternoon before gametime. Conveniently it is located directly across the street from where Tien is staying.

The beginning of the museum was a display with old photographs and stories of how the subway was built. It was much less interactive than the second half, which had you actually going into old subway trains and busses and things. The first part was still very informative, even if it was not as fun. This chart shows the costs of things at the time of the subway construction as opposed to how much a laborer would earn.

Beneath the museum is a subway stop that is now only used by the museum. They have old subway cars from many different time periods parked on each side of the track and you can go into them and have a look around. On the platform the signs and benches match the time period of the train parked nearby.

I think this car is from around 1907.

Inside the circa 1907 subway car.

Even the really old subway cars had advertising in them.

This subway car is from about 1916.. note the ceiling fans!

This train is from about 1928. Thus far the seats have all been padded and covered with a material that seems to be woven from some sort of synthetic straw-like material.

I like the porthole windows on the 1949 subway train.

Some old subway signs.

The history of subway commutors being nicknamed “strap hangers” goes back to this. In the really old subway cars, this one from 1907, there were straps hanging from the ceiling that commuters without a seat hung on to for balance. “Strap Hanger” has become somewhat of a prideful nickname to the modern-day commutor and there is even a public interest group called Straphangers Campaign which has been a respected voice for New York’s daily subway and bus riders since 1979.

Running the length of the train behind the straps, you can see in this photo of a 1907 train, is a cord. At the end of the cord is a bell. When you want to get off at the next subway stop you ring the bell and the conductor stops. .. much like our current bus system. The remaining photos are of the evoloution of the strap.

On the Subway

Subway Ads

Fur Lady
Siberian Lady, Subway, Manhattan

I don’t ride the subway tons so every time I’m underground I seem to see something unique. Last week coming home from the hellacioius trip to Toys R Us (1, 2) I snapped these two photos.

In the first photo I found it strange that the silouette in the ipod ad & the man in the Kaletra ad are striking the same pose.

In the second photo this lady was just cracking me up! On a day of moderate 40 degree weather, she was dressed like this was the subway through the antarctic or something. I just wanted to shake her and be like “Honey, it’s not that cold!”

Jessica, Rachelle, Eleanor

Last night I went to a party in Park Slope and didn’t get home until 9:00 this morning. (Long story). I still somehow managed to meet up at Ping’s for dim sum at 11:30 a.m. Afterwards we met Sarah at Pho Bang where we got some Vietnamese iced coffee and Sarah got Banh Mi (Vietnamese sandwiches).

Sarah reviews cars for her job and this week has a Cadillac SRX so she volunteered to drive us out to Prospect Heights in Brooklyn where I was scheduled to look at an apartment. I’m so out of touch with cars these days and for the most part Sarah always has high-end cars so I’m always impressed with the features on them. This one had a theater system in the second row and power-folding third row seating. We were watching Scratch – that’s Mix Master Mike with Jess.

Jess walked down to Park Slope to visit with some other friends while the rest of us rushed back down to Lower Manhattan. Sarah wasn’t feeling well, so she just dropped us off. Heather Champ is in town and was having a group photo taken for the 20,000 photo submission to the Mirror Project site. Unfortunately, we hit a ton of traffic in Brooklyn and got there late. We took our own photo anyway. Sucks.. I really wanted to say “hello” to Heather. Oh well.. maybe she’ll be at SXSW again next year.

Numbers on Water St & John St.

Jeannette & Yvan & Eleanor caught the bus uptown and I walked to the subway. I was starting to crash and when I passed by these numbers on the corner of Water St. & John St. it really confused me. Does anyone know what they are? I thought it was a calendar, but there are too many numbers.. and the number 5 was lit up.
