Last night Joanna and I attended a party to celebrate Chicago Gateway Green’s 20th birthday. There was tons of great food from local restaurants and lots of free booze too. The special guest was Mayor Daley. It was the first time I’ve seen him for real, live and up close. My first thought when he walked out: “Man, he’s short!”

More on Gateway Green, the party, and Daley’s speech is on Chicagoist.

Justin & Rachelle’s Shoes :: Lucky Strike, Streeterville, Chicago

To be fair, our game turned off in the 9th frame and I was totally going to make it up in the 10th! ha.

Last night I went bowling at Lucky Strike with some bloggers from Chicagoist, Gapers Block and Coudal. Chicagoist, as a whole, didn’t do so great, but we still had fun.

Lucky Strike is the fanciest bowling alley ever. It smells nice, the shoes are nice and they all match (each other and all the pairs are the same style), there’s no beer or cigarette smell, there are leather couches instead of plastic or vinyl chairs, the music is good, there are no intimidating league dorks hanging around, they have every beer or drink you could imagine, thier space is huge and includes good food and pool tables and a lounge and a bar, the freaking restrooms have attendents! I don’t know. It was nice, but it just didn’t feel like real bowling.

See Chicagoist’s photos and Gapers Block’s photos.

Doug & Naoko’s wedding was on Saturday. The ceremony & cocktails afterwards were at The Drake Hotel, which is like the oldest, most famous, most luxurious hotel in Chicago. It was gorgeous. And Naoko looked beautiful in both her kimono and her white wedding gown. The ceremony itself was a mix of American, Buddhist, and Japanese traditions. After the ceremony and mingling around with drinks we headed over to Gibson’s Steakhouse for dinner and the reception. I have a ton more photos of that. I’ll be posting them soon.

Centennial Fountain Water Spray

Centennial Fountain Water Spray

I posted these photos and started to write this with the hope that someone could tell me why this water was spraying over the Chicago River. But I think my question was answered while trying to figure out the exact location of the spray.

Sometimes during lunch when I just need to get out of the office and chill for a little bit I’ll take a walk by the Chicago River. I noticed this water spraying on several occasions. The first photo above was taken from the north side of the river and the second photo from the south.

As I was posting the photos I figured out about what street the spray is at. It’s McClurg, because I remember it was on the same street as Fox & Obel. Then I remembered that it was near a fountain so I Googled “McClurg Fountain” and figured out that the fountain is called Centennial Fountain and that the water spray is actually part of the fountain. Mystery solved.

The designer of Centennial Fountain says that the arc of water is supposed to “symbolize the natural phenomenon of water — how it comes from one source, spreads, and goes back to another.” Centerstage reports that the fountain runs continuously from 10 am – midnight and that the arc operates for 10 minutes on the hour, from 10 am – 2 pm and 5 pm – midnight.

Centennial Fountain is really beautiful. Maybe on my next walk I need to take some photos of the actual fountain.
