Off to the Allergist

July 11th, 2011 · 6 Comments

Dallas and I have tossed around getting a dog for a few years. It never seemed like the right time and then when it was, when we owned our condo and didn’t have any trips planned for a while, we decided not to. And then I got the urge again and then we were planning the wedding and after that was finally maybe the right time again. But I’d been noticing that Dallas would get an itchy face when visiting the houses of some of our friends who have dogs. Also, since coming back from Hawaii he was snoring like crazy! So, I asked him to go to the allergist for both of these reasons. Since I hadn’t seen an allergist for years, I went too.

On a recommendation from Kristin, we went to see Dr. Anne Ditto at Northwestern. We actually both went on the same day with our appointments spaced just a half hour apart. Northwestern is a teaching hospital, so we actually saw different student doctors with Dr. Ditto overseeing.

After our allergy tests we found out that I am allergic to mold and Dallas is allergic to tree pollens and that we are both allergic to dogs, cats, ragweed and dust mites. So… there go our thoughts of getting a dog! The doctors said we could get one anyway and see what happens and do treatment, but my allergies to cats when they lived with me was so severe, they did not recommend it. When I had two cats I would wake up not able to breath and had to have an inhaler for allergy-induced asthma. Not fun times!

Anyway, we got updated prescriptions and advice on how to deal with seasonal things. We’ve put covers on our pillows and mattress to help guard against dust mites. Oh. Also? All that snoring? Dallas had a sinus infection! So he got antibiotics for that too.

We both have follow up appointments scheduled.. hopefully we’re on the road to feeling better this allergy season!

Last week Roundarch had it’s annual Summer Event, which consists of an all-night party and an all-day meeting with everyone from all of our offices in town to attend. It was great to see everyone that I work with in other offices and the party was so much fun. And the after party. The after after party, I can’t say… I went home at 2 and others were still going out for more! As for the meeting, it was actually pretty entertaining… not like the dry all-staff meetings I was used to at other places I’ve worked. Great event, Roundarch!

Free Nintendo DSi

August 13th, 2009 · 3 Comments

Last month Nintendo had a dinner for all of the Nintendo Enthusiasts who were attending the BlogHer conference. I wasn’t at the conference, but since it was local, I was still invited to the dinner. I was able to bring one person with me and didn’t think that Dallas would appreciate all of the blogging ladies, so I brought Jess.

We went over to the Sheraton, where BlogHer was being held. From there we were taken in horse-drawn carriages up Michigan Avenue to the Hancock Building.

At the Hancock, we were taken up to the Signature Room for hors d’vours and wine. Lots of wine.

After dinner we all got surprise gifts: Nintendo DSi!

Had a great time at the party. This Nintendo program has been awesome. Remember the Nintendo DS Lite party and the Nintendo WII party and giveaway? How could this all not be a blast!?

The stars of the party were 2 ice sculptures that were a few feet tall and shaped like frogs. They were used to serve appletinis, which were then served to people in glowing glasses. Read more at Chicagoist and see more photos here. Or, check out my post on TECH Cocktail 2.

Last night Joanna and I attended a party to celebrate Chicago Gateway Green’s 20th birthday. There was tons of great food from local restaurants and lots of free booze too. The special guest was Mayor Daley. It was the first time I’ve seen him for real, live and up close. My first thought when he walked out: “Man, he’s short!”

More on Gateway Green, the party, and Daley’s speech is on Chicagoist.
