North Avenue Beach

August 6th, 2008 · 2 Comments

On Tuesday, Stephanie and I went to the farmers’ market. I don’t know if she’d ever been to a farmers’ market before. She wasn’t too terribly interested. Vegetables are not cool, apparently. Although, I must admit that she did try some things I doubted she would. Thank you baba ganoush for all of that. Back at the cookie party, Steph tried baba ganoush and loved it. I don’t think she knew what it was. So now when she doesn’t want to try something I remind her that she would never have wanted to try roasted eggplant if she knew that’s what baba ganoush was. So at Whole Foods they had free samples of some kind of carrot parsnip cake and I took one. She said she didn’t want to try it because it sounded “ew” and I reminded her of baba ganoush. She circled back for a sample. I don’t think she liked it too much, but at least she tried. You never know. She ate raw zucchini slices today and liked it.

Anyway, back to the farmers market. We bought a bunch of stuff. I remember at one point Steph said something along the lines of “this vegetable looks like crap!” I had to remind her that the produce at the farmers market is fresh, natural, dirty, right from the farm. It was picked ripe. It didn’t travel 1,000 miles, get sprayed with coloring and wax and made to look pretty so people would buy it in some super mega store. I tried to teach her a bit about buying local and direct. I don’t know if it’s possible where she lives… but we talked a lot about all the reasons to love a farmers’ market.

For lunch we went to Turquoise Cafe, Roscoe Village’s Turkish restaurant, where Stephanie attempted to get her gyro on again. Turquoise didn’t have gyros proper, but when Steph decided she loved gyros at Retro on Roscoe I told her other names they go by sometimes so she could watch for them at home. Names like… schwarma. So for lunch she ordered the beef schwarma. I got the lamb wrap. When it came we split both half and half. The lamb was more gyro-like than the beef, which oddly kind of resembled a steak burrito. I definitely like the lamb wrap more there. I’ve had it on several occasions.

Hamlin Park, Lakeview, Chicago

We were rushing back from lunch so we could get to the Hamlin Park pool when it opened. .. which turned out to be never. There are tons of big trees down at Hamlin Park from the storm and one was on the fence off the pool. The pool was closed for the whole day. Since we already had swim bags packed, we stopped home quick just to check the swim report and then we headed to North Avenue beach for a few hours. It was nice. The water was fantastic. I don’t think I’ve actually gone into the water at any Chicago beaches. I mean, more than ankle deep. We had fun. And Chicago beaches always freak me out how you sit on wide sand beaches and the lake is so big you can’t see across it. Then you turn around and there are skyscrapers behind you.

Coming home Stephanie and I got off the bus at Roscoe and Damen at the exact moment that Dallas got to the intersection from his walk from the Addison Brown Line. Kind of funny. For dinner we grilled chicken sausages. Later on Stephanie and I made zucchini blueberry bread with zucchini and blueberries we got at the farmers’ market. More on that later!

Jewelry Project

August 6th, 2008 · 2 Comments

On Monday it was raining so Stephanie helped me with a jewelry project I wanted to do. Basically, the top of the dresser and back of the door was a giant mess and the way that my jewelry stored was hideous. No one really goes in our bedroom, so I didn’t need a fashion statement.. but the way things were just thrown on the dresser, or overflowing in a small dish, or hung 5-deep on the hook made it difficult to find anything. I don’t have lots of nice jewelry, but I could never remember what I had when I tried to get dressed and match things up in the morning. I needed a solution that would allow me to easily see everything.

Before:

Many months ago I ripped this organization article from Real Simple magazine but then I never did anything with it. This was a project I wanted to finish this summer, so a couple weeks ago I finally purchased the things I needed to get organized. Basically, I just got pearl-topped pins from Jo-Ann Fabric and linen pinboards from Pottery Barn. Then Monday, the rain, perfect opportunity to finally finish the project.

We took everything down and out of the room and dusted the bedroom. I was kind of nervous about mounting the pinboards because I tend to be impatient about hanging things and then have to do it a few times and it messed the wall up. Plus, this was something I would have to interact with so it had to be solid. Luckily, Pottery Barn provided detailed hanging instructions and templates for putting anchors in the wall correctly. I was able to hang the pinboards solidly on the first try. yay!

While watching TV, Stephanie and I also went through all of the jewelry and organized it and cleaned it with cleaning clothes. There were several pieces that I didn’t wear any more or weren’t my style any more that Steph liked, so she made out on helping. I had some cool belts that didn’t fit that were good for her too. Finally, I hung everything up on the pinboards and only put belts and my robe on the back of the door. I know a few more things will collect there, but we don’t need to have 20 hoodies and sweaters hanging back there at all times.

After:

After the jewelry project Stephanie and I had lunch at home. I was getting a little stir crazy so we went out and browsed around some of the little stores on Roscoe. It was overcast and wet, but not raining. Then we went into the last store and came out and all of a sudden it was sunny and beautiful. We quick ran over to the pool to see what the hours were, but it was only going to be open for 45 more minutes. We decided to pick up a few things at the grocery store. Since Steph had never been to Whole Foods, we walked over there. We also rented a movie from Blockbuster, something I haven’t done for years! I had to apply for a whole new card, but luckily that only took a minute.

For dinner we grilled turkey burgers and corn on the cob. Dallas teased us because we were looking at GrilledCornOnTheCob.com for proper instructions. Later on we were watching the movie we rented, Penelope, when all the storms rolled in. Steph and I were upstairs and it got so scary up there that we ran downstairs and finished watching the movie in the bedroom. Luckily, we’d just cleaned it that morning!

Home to Storms

Airplane Wing at Sunset

Last night I had the 5pm flight out of SFO to ORD. It was delayed by about an hour and a half, but I wasn’t really complaining because I’d heard some horror stories about how people were delayed over the last day or so because of the storms in Chicago. I had the window shade closed for most of the trip because I was trying to sleep, but at one point I opened it and what I saw is in the photo above. I finally got home at about 1am.

Today on my bike ride to class and back I saw a lot of what’s in the photo below. Luckily there’s no damage to my apartment.
