… and that 90% is African and Latin American coffees. They still named it after the Hawaiian Queen. Also, Hawaiian people correct me if I’m wrong, isn’t the correct spelling is Kapiolani. Maybe Kopelani is a word too? Who knows. Doesn’t make up for the fact that it’s only a small percentage Hawaiian coffee.

Art Institute, Chicago

Art Institute, Chicago
After visiting the Sears Tower, Stephanie and I used some free passes I had to check out the Art Institute. I think she liked it, but got her fill fast. Also, a lot of the paintings I wanted to show her were pulled because of the new wing they’re building. We were tired from walking around a lot that day and the day before at Retro on Roscoe, so we decided to take a break.

At the Retro on Roscoe the day before we’d gotten two coupons for free smoothies at Starbucks, so we got those, a cookie and a rice krispie treat and rested in Millennium Park. It was a beautiful day and felt really good to sit down. We just sat and chatted for about 45 minutes.

Feeling a bit rested, we headed over to State Street to look at the cheap accessories at H&M. Most of them were pretty ridiculous or not Stephanie’s style, but she did find one pair of earrings she liked that were only like $4.95. Next we headed up to Borders. Apparently there’s this young adult book series called The Twilight Saga that’s all the rage these days. It’s some kind of vampire love story. There are four books out and they’re already making a movie. Anyway, when Steph was visiting with my cousin Kelly she got the first book in the series and was hooked. We were planning on going to the pool later in the week, so I got her the second book to read poolside. Of course, she couldn’t even wait for the train to pull out of the train station before cracking it open! All the talk of Twilight Saga and Jonas Brothers this week has made me feel a bit ancient. FYI, Miley Cyrus is totally not cool.

For dinner we went to Retro on Roscoe. Dallas got polish food (surprise, surprise). Steph and I split a margherita pizza made on a mobile brick oven and another gyro.

Sweet Thang & John’s Place Coming Soon to Roscoe Village
July 30th, 2008 · 4 Comments
I had lunch with Greg today at El Tinajon because that’s what I do now. Have lunch with people. El Tinajon is Roscoe Village’s Guatemalan restaurant and they have really cheap lunch specials ($4.95). If anyone wants to meet up for lunch some time, let me know. Good excuse to get out of the house.
It was nice to catch up with Greg. We always go too far in between seeing each other. Greg used to live on Leavitt near Addison about 5-6 years ago and was saying how different Roscoe Village is now. How many new stores and restaurants there are and how the property values have increased. Well, today I noticed signs for two more new restaurants that are opening on Roscoe Street. I’m especially excited about these two places because they are both places that are already established in Chicago, so hopefully they’ll be good. Plus, they are very, very close to my apartment. I wonder if the signs going up this week have to do with the fact that Roscoe Village’s biggest street fair of the year, Retro On Roscoe, is just days away. Free publicity when everyone comes to visit our neighborhood.
Sweet Thang

Sweet Thang‘s site says they’re opening at 2142 W. Roscoe, but that’s where Kickin’ is. I think they’re actually at 2144 W. Roscoe, which is what Time Out Chicago is reporting, and is the former site of Chicago United Mortgage. Sweet Thang lost their Bucktown/Wicker Park lease and that’s why they’re opening in Roscoe Village. I believe they were located right on North by the six-way with Milwaukee and Damen. Sweet Thang specializes in pastries, but their site says that with the new, larger location they’re offering an expanded menu with a bigger kitchen. In addition to freshly baked cakes, desserts, and pastries, they’ll have an expanded deli menu and coffee bar that will serve sandwiches, salads, and coffee & tea drinks. I’m excited for a new salad and sandwich place. And since Roscoe Village’s only independent coffeehouse, MoJoe’s closed, it will be nice to have a new indie coffee joint (alternative to Starbucks on Roscoe).
Jack’s Place

La Mora has been closed for quite some time. For what it’s worth, we’ve lived in Roscoe Village for 2 years and I’d never been to La Mora. No reason, really. I heard it was ok, but I guess not good enough to make it. So, I was really excited to see what would replace it. John’s Place has been open in Lincoln Park for 14 years and is opening a second location in La Mora’s space at 2132 W Roscoe. Their menu online looks really great so I’m excited to try it out. It seems like La Mora’s been closed a long time. I wish John’s would open already.

Starbucks Vivanno
July 22nd, 2008 · 9 Comments
Our local Starbucks was really pushing this new smoothie they’re selling, the Vivanno. I was walking by one day and decided to give it a try on a whim. There are two versions, one is Orange Mango Banana and the other is Chocolate Banana. I tried the Orange Mango Banana one. It’s made with a whole banana, which I actually saw them blend and use. I liked that it was fresh and not some frozen banana who knows what. The banana is blended with an Orange Mango Naked Juice that is made just for Starbucks, protein powder, fiber powder, milk and ice. I think they usually use 2% milk, but I requested skim. You can only get the grande size. Some of the nutritional information for the Orange Mango Banana Vivanno is 250 calories, 2 grams of fat, 47 grams of carbs, and 6 grams of fiber. Since I used skim milk, I think that the calories and fat grams were even less. The cost was about $4.50.
Now, what about the taste? I thought it was good. Very banana, less mango and orange. I don’t think that there is anywhere else in our neighborhood that you can get a smoothie, so I might try another one some time. Then again, I rarely ever get smoothies even when they are available, so who knows. I thought $4.50 was a bit much, but I always think that smoothies are expensive so maybe that’s about what smoothies cost?

This is How I Roll
November 4th, 2007 · No Comments

I was at O’Hare this morning for a flight to Boston and was waiting on line at Starbucks when this guy walked by who looked super familiar. I knew he was a really famous sports figure but that I knew him from something else like announcing or a cheesy reality TV show. I was going crazy racking my brain to think of who it was, his face was so familiar, there was no mistaking it. Then I whipped my laptop open and did some searching. Evander Holyfield. And the cheesy reality program? Dancing with the Stars. Not that I watch that show.. He was sporting a nice Louis Vuitton carry-on too. Just now I found this news clip that he was in Chicago promoting a “Gloves Not Guns” program that introduces kids to boxing as a way of keeping them off the streets, so I’m sure it was him. There’s a lot going on with boxing in Chicago right now so maybe he stayed in town through the weekend. Sidenote: Does George Foreman know that Evander Holyfield is selling the “Real Deal” Grill?
So then, as I was eagerly trying to search for photos of Evander to confirm my sighting, I got paged on the intercom and was told to go to the podium. “Oh shit!” was my first thought. I gathered my stuff and went up. “The flight is overbooked,” they said. “So we need to upgrade you.” No problemo, lady! Anytime! This is only the second time I’ve ever been in first class. The first time was once when they canceled my flight and rescheduled it for so close after the original flight that it didn’t even affect my schedule. But when I showed up for the new flight they said I was upgraded and I didn’t argue. I think it was only from New York to Philly for a layover. Too bad my luck with upgrades has always been with short flights and not when I’m going to California or Hawaii. Oh well, I’m not complaining.
