Logan Square Neighborhood Walk: California Avenue

July 23rd, 2011 · 1 Comment

One day a few months ago, I was wanting to go for a walk, but wanting to go somewhere new. I used to do these “neighborhood walks” and post photos on this site, but haven’t done it forever. So, I decided that maybe over the course of this summer I will try to walk Logan Square. When you look up Logan Square boundaries, people have varying opinions. For this exercise, I’m going to go with these boundaries for the neighborhood: Diversey to the north, Western to the east, Armitage to the south and Pulaski to the West. However you classify it, the neighborhood is HUGE. So, I think if I do this I’ll have to break it up into a bunch of chunks. As the summer has progressed I haven’t done a great job keeping up on this project, but I’ll keep trying. Here are my photos from my walk on California Avenue from Armitage to Diversey.

Franklin & Ontario Mural

June 9th, 2011 · 7 Comments

A week or so ago I walked up to Chicago and Franklin to a Starbucks there to meet Jen, Jay, and Marcus. Jen and Jay were in town from New York and I finally got to meet their baby, Katie! She’s so adorable. Anyway, I passed by this mural on Franklin & Ontario and stopped to admire it. I can’t figure out what restaurant used to be here. The internet is failing me! This is what the building looks like on Google Streetview:

Any ideas?

Starbucks 100% Kona Coffee

May 11th, 2011 · 1 Comment

If you want to realize how crappy your office coffee is, then march yourself over to Starbucks and order some 100% Kona coffee that is brewed in the Clover machine. The Clover is this fancy-dancy, expensive machine that brews the coffee by the cup. I got hooked on the Starbucks Kona after we got back from Hawaii in March. Our office coffee was tasting like such crap after that trip. After I realized how much I was spending on coffee from Starbucks, I made myself adjust to the crappy office coffee.. sigh. The things we settle for.

P.S. Starbucks also changed their logo in March. You can see it on the cup here. No words, just a picture now.

Pumpkin Chai Tea @ Argo Tea

October 10th, 2008 · 4 Comments

Argo Tea, River North, Chicago

Argo Tea just opened a store in the Merchandise Mart last month. I’ve never been to any of their stores because I don’t really enjoy tea at all. Mayyybe some chrysanthemum tea with dim sum, but that’s about it. I know people have said that Argo is really a great place, but I just was never interested. Dallas drinks tea like crazy, mostly iced and flavors of iced tea. I’ve tried it many times and just can’t get into it. And I know people go crazy for that chai latte that Starbucks has, but bleh. Not for me.

Merchandise Mart is my train stop and when I exited the building yesterday morning there was a guy handing out free samples. I don’t know why I took one, when he was clearly with Argo Tea, but I did. I had the pumpkin chai and it was delicious.

In August Dallas’ brother Jordan and his girlfriend Liz stayed with us. As an unnecessary, but appreciated, way of saying “thank you” they gave us a little gift bag of fun foodstuffs. Part of the gift was two containers of different chai teas from Trader Joe’s. Now that it’s getting chilly and I found a tea I like at Argo, I’m actually excited to try them!

Nevermind that it’s only 10% Kona….

August 18th, 2008 · 2 Comments

… and that 90% is African and Latin American coffees. They still named it after the Hawaiian Queen. Also, Hawaiian people correct me if I’m wrong, isn’t the correct spelling is Kapiolani. Maybe Kopelani is a word too? Who knows. Doesn’t make up for the fact that it’s only a small percentage Hawaiian coffee.
