Hey, Squirrels, Dinner at My Place. Anytime!

I shouldn’t be mad that the squirrels (I’m guessing) have been nibbling the gourds I put on our front stoop, because they did leave my patio flowers alone all summer long. I’m sure they’ll find a way to the roof deck by next summer because I know they’re holding a grudge against me as much as I’m holding a grudge against them for eating all my daisies at my old apartment in Roscoe Village.

I do find it odd that nature is attacking my pumpkins and gourds faster than the thugs down the street. I didn’t expect these to last for a day before some idiots were throwing them at each other or our house. I can just remember how devastating it was when we were kids and we’d spend all that time designing and carving pumpkins and some hoodlums would come by that very night and smash them all over the street. I guess I never expect pumpkin decorations to last any more. Stupid New London teenagers.. jading me for life!

Birthday Flowers

September 8th, 2008 · 8 Comments

This is the 7th year in a row that my parents have gotten me flowers on my birthday. They’re always much appreciated. I was wondering about this year since I’ve only been in the Roundarch office for a few days, but my mom must have just gotten on the internet and found the address. Good sleuth work!

I was glad this year to see a bunch of gerbera daisies in the bouquet since I haven’t been able to grow any this year because of our crazy neighborhood squirrels. At least I get to enjoy daisies somehow this year! I was also glad to just have the nice bouquet and not the balloon too. I know my parents like those, but I get a little embarrassed by how much attention it draws, especially at a new place where I don’t know many people. I don’t know where they got the flowers this year, but they seemed especially nice (make a note for next year, mom!).

Also, here’s a photo of my set up at work. I’m not sure if I’ll be sitting here permanently, but I’m here for now. It’s not a 30-inch flat screen monitor and an Aeron chair, but I think I can manage! :) And yes, I’m still struggling with the PC and Vista. My deskmate, the guy that sits next to me, flies into Chicago from Hoboken/New York every week from Monday to Thursday. On Friday a guy who works at a local client site all week took his place at that desk. Besides the reception and bathroom traffic, it’s not a bad place to sit.

Thanks to everyone for all of the birthday greetings today. I got a lot of email ones, like always, but also, so many on Facebook! That was kind of nice.

Here are my past flowers. It’s kind of interesting to go through them and see all the places I’ve gotten flowers delivered: Google, FeedBurner, Monster, Chicago, New York, etc..

Squirrel Caught in the Act

August 11th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Late this afternoon I was sitting on the deck reading a book when our neighbors came home. They were coming up their deck and I don’t know what the wife/mom was referring to, but I heard her say something like “those dang squirrels are out of control!!” A few minutes later I went into the house to get my camera take a photo of something. When I came back out I noticed that across the way a squirrel jumped into our other neighbor’s tomato plant. I think it’s tomato.. or peppers. I quick snapped off a few photos. I didn’t actually see him make off with a tomato, but I’m convinced that the squirrels are the root of the problems we’ve been having. This morning I was out watering our deck plants and noticed a lot of holes in the dirt from where the squirrels were digging again. I still do not have daisies because the squirrels eat them. They say that pigeons are rats, but I think squirrels are! After I took the photo of the squirrel in the pot, I tried to make some noise. It ran across the deck rail and then jumped up onto the roof of the next house you can see.

Daisy-Eating Squirrels

July 30th, 2008 · 13 Comments

Eaten Daisies, Roscoe Village, Chicago

Last year I had gorgeous Gerbera Daisies planted on our deck so this year I planted more of the same. This year, for some reason, the squirrels have been eating every bud that grows. At first they would let the flower go into full bloom and then make off with it, but leave a bunch of petals as a kind of “F.U.” But now they’re eating the buds before they can even grow into anything. I haven’t had a daisy on the deck for many weeks. Thoughts? Also, I’m almost positive it’s the squirrels doing this, but I haven’t actually seen them.
