Jess won some tickets to see a taping of Sound Opinions with Grizzly Bear at the House of Blues and invited me to come along. Justin is a big fan of Grizzly Bear and had given me some of their music a while back, but I didn’t really get into it. I am a big fan of Sound Opinions, though, so I was excited to go. Jess told me that she had one of the Grizzly Bear albums and didn’t really get into it, but when she saw them live at Lollapalooza, she really enjoyed the performance, so I had hope. Turns out, she was right. These guys just look like regular hipsters from Brooklyn, but when they open their mouths to sing it was like angels – beautiful voices with lots of harmonizing.

The format of this show was very much like when I saw the Death Cab for Cutie Sound Opinions show except this time was much shorter. The band was late and I think it was a bit of a rush to get the questions and songs in. And Grizzly Bear only sang 3 songs. But there were only about 30 people in the audience.. so basically, Grizzly Bear did a private show for a super small crowd. I’m looking forward to revisiting some of their music now.

Yesterday I was lucky enough to attend a secret Death Cab for Cutie Sound Opinions show on behalf of Chicagoist and Live Music Blog. I’m kind of a passive Death Cab fan. I have a lot of their albums and I enjoy them, but I’ve never gone to a show or gushed over Ben Gibbard or any of those uber fan moves. I do love that Postal Service album, though, so maybe I’m just more of a Ben Gibbard fan, since that’s his side project. Also, I really enjoy Sound Opinions, but I’m constantly behind on their podcast.

In any case, I really enjoyed the show today. It was neat to see Death Cab perform in such a small intimate setting (the Claudia Cassidy Theater only seats 200 and some people), especially since they’re playing at the Pritzker Pavilion in the begining of June and it sold out in like 5 seconds. The band sounded fantastic. It was also neat to hear them chit chat with Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot. On top of all that, I knew some people at Chicago Public Radio, where Sound Opinions airs, and they recognized me from Chicagoist, knew I was a photographer, and gave me one of two reserved press photographer seats in the front row.

Thanks to Josh Andrews and Cindy Hansen for totally hooking me up with the seats and to Justin who reached out invite me in the first place. Well, actually Justin invited Jess who invited me, but whatever! I wonder if Justin’s moving to San Francisco will continue to pay out for those of us still here in Chicago!
