Chicago Mascots + Val Warner + School Kids

July 13th, 2011 · No Comments

One day back in June I was walking by the Thompson Center and came across a whole bunch of Chicago sports team mascots and Valerie Warner and a bunch of school kids. I didn’t really know what was going on, so I just took some photos and figured it out later.

Turns out it was the Salvation Army‘s Hunger Campaign and they were collecting donations. But to make it fun they were having people text for certain mascots. Also, each mascot had a box so you could just put money in the mascot box. These are the mascots who were present:

Not too surprisingly, the Salvation Army is reporting that the White Sox mascot, Southpaw, won. While I was there, it sure looked like Sparky was winning. It’s who the kids liked best, but I guess the kids were not voting with their wallets. More importantly, the Salvation Army raised more than $500.

Along with the mascots, there was Val Warner, who I recognized immediately from WGN Morning News. She and Ryan Chiaverini are now doing Windy City Live in Oprah’s old time slot.

One of our favorite things about Toons is the shuffleboard. I’ve been playing shuffleboard there since way back in 2004 or 2005.

Oh, and if you couldn’t tell from my friends’ shirts, these photos were taken during World Cup, which is why this douche kept blowing a vuvuzela in my face.

Logan Square Farmers Market, Roscoe Village Garden Walk, Burger Fest & Soccer

July 12th, 2010 · No Comments

On Sunday morning I met up with Jess for a quick run through the Logan Square Farmers Market. I was having problems finding a parking spot for my bike, when I ran into my coworker Jeff and his wife Khloe. They had a booth and let me lock my bike there, so problem solved! At the Farmers Market I knew what I needed: tomatoes, lettuce and berries, so I pretty much got it and left. I was also keeping my eye out for Rare Bird Preserves, but I don’t think they had a stand this week. Oh well. Maybe next week. I purchased their rhubarb/strawberry preserves at the market a few weeks ago and we just cracked them open. So good!

I rode by The Rocking Horse, around the corner from the market, and noticed they now have a pole sticking out of the building, and the pole basically is up the arse of a rocking horse. Do not like! You’re telling me the huge sign that says “The Rocking Horse” was not enough? They literally had to attach a big rocking horse to the building?

After the farmers market I headed to Roscoe Village. Jen and Quinn and I went to a few houses on the Roscoe Village Garden Walk and went to Roscoe Village Burger Fest, which was just a few blocks from their house on Belmont between Damen and Leavitt.

Burger Fest had a large kids section that we took Quinn to. Unicoi Art Studio, a children’s art school located on Belmont and Hoyne, had a booth where kids could do free art projects. Quinn made a beard & mustache on a stick!

Quinn also went on a few inflatable bouncy things.. a pirate ship and a kind of maze one with a climbing wall and slide at the end. They probably had like 6 of these structures set up, but they were charging $3 to do on each one, which is a total rip off. There were a bunch of kids having melt downs because they wanted to go on every thing and you had to buy a $3 ticket for each one, which a lot of parents, including Jen, were not going to do!

After this we decided to get lunch. We tried sliders from The Bad Apple and Mrs. Murphy & Sons Irish Bistro. The Bad Apple definitely had the better burger, but Mrs. Murphy’s won us over with Guinness ice cream! Since we were having lunch by the ponies, Quinn wanted to take a ride after lunch. I always feel a bit sorry for ponies that just walk in circles all day. I don’t think they have a good life, but they sure do make kids happy.

I walked around the circle with Quinn. We talked about which pony was his favorite and how soft the pony’s hair is. Quinn asked “What is that smell?” (poop) and “Why did we stop?” (pony pooped). We talked about what a Buzz Lightyear obsessed boy might name a pony (Buzz Ponyyear or Pony Lightyear or Buzz Lightpony). I tried to avoid questions like “what is that down there?!?!” (while pointed between the boy pony’s legs).

On the way home we stopped off at a few houses to check out their gardens. When we got back to Jen and Chad’s there were 10 or 12 friends gathered in the outside living room to watch the soccer game. Jen and Chad’s house was part of the Roscoe Village Garden Walk so all afternoon they had visitors coming in to look at the yard and then asking what the score of the game was! Spain won, which I guess is good because Brian had put money on them for Dallas when he is in Vegas so he should be getting some kind of pay out. Later on we went back to the fest til it rained, then played cards in Jen and Chad’s garage til it stopped raining, and then went back to the fest to see the Gin Blossoms until it thunderstormed and then we left, thoroughly soaked.

World Cup Soccer: U.S. vs. England

June 14th, 2010 · No Comments

Many of our friends are soccer fans. They used to play in a league, they watch all the games they can, and they’ve even travelled to other countries to watch games. Dallas and I are not big soccer fans, but when our friends rented out the back room at Toons because the U.S. team was taking on the English team, we were there. Our friend who we affectionately call Limey is, of course, from England. He had 1 or 2 other friends cheering on his side, otherwise we were all cheering for the U.S.

There were probably… I don’t know? 50 friends and friends of friends there to watch the game. There was also a drink special. I think it was $30 for 3 hours all you can drink. I didn’t participate. I never drink enough to make a deal like that worth it.

England scored first and Limey went nuts. I mean really nuts. Screaming and jumping. It was pretty funny.

Then the U.S. team scored a point. And everyone made fun of Limey (red shirt).

And he tried to say he’d been so humble when England scored a goal. Yeh right!

The game ended up a tie, which was probably best for everyone. Later on, we played shuffleboard. Dallas used Quinn for a puck.

I’m not sure if it was part of the bet, or if Limey just did it to be a good sport, but he put on a U.S. soccer jersey. Then he took this photo with me with the jersey on and said that it was our wedding gift.

Everyone had thought that hell froze over or pigs were flying because he was wearing the U.S. jersey, so everyone wanted to get their photo with Limey.

Later on we went to Guthrie’s. Chad and Limey swapped shirts. Both were U.S.A. shirts, but look how tight Chad’s shirt is on Limey and how baggy Limey’s shirt is on Chad. Limey had an undershirt on, but Chad? He was topless in the bar for a bit while the shirt situation got sorted out. It happens.

Ted really wanted to do shots. Really bad. Of Jaegermeister, no less. Ew. I somehow avoided it. Others did not. Then others got caught looking like this:

After a while a bunch of us realized we were exhausted. It was only like 9:00 p.m., but we got to Toons at about 12:30 p.m. or a little after, so it had been a long day. We got some grub at a new taco spot on Irving Park, Rockin’ Taco, and called it a night. (More on Rockin’ Taco later!)
