On Thursday night a bunch of folks from Six Apart were in Chicago to have a party and demo their latest product, Vox. I did a post previously about Vox, so it may sound familiar, even though the product is not available to the public until about October. It was awesome to meet everyone from Six Apart and I tried not to be too much of a fangirl to Mena, but a photo of us together was required! I also found it cool to bring together my Chicagoist world with my FeedBurner world with the blogging in Chicago world and throw in Six Apart. Also, Krissy from Six Apart, who I’d been emailling with quite a bit to set up a Chicagoist reader contest, also is the Music Editor at SFist.

Vox

Walt was nice enough to share an invite to Vox with me last week. Today I finally went in a little bit and customized and made a few posts. It’s nice. Vox, if you haven’t heard, is the latest brainchild of Six Apart, who also have Movable Type, TypePad and LiveJournal under their umbrella. Vox isn’t available to everyone yet, it’s still in Preview mode, but later this year it should be.

What struck me was how simple it is to create your blog.. and not just boring text on a page, but a blog with tons of photos, video, and audio. Also cool is how integrated it is with Amazon, Flickr and YouTube. You can pull in content and link to their sites without ever visiting them. Also, changing the design of your site is done lickity split. I can think of several friends and family members who send around a lot of photos and videos who could totally get into this. And did I mention it’s free?

My Vox blog is here. I’ll probably play around a bit for a while, but it won’t become my main site.

When I attend SXSW Interactive I am refreshed. It’s not like I come home with 500 notes on tips and tricks, it’s more like I come back wanting to produce a higher quality of work. I guess that’s what happens when you spend a few days rubbing elbows with the web industry’s leaders. These are the panels and presentations I attended this year:

» Craigslist and Online Community
» Accessing Multimedia: The Object of My Perception
» Moblog Nation: You Can Take It With You
» MoveOn.org’s Eli Pariser and Zack Exley Keynote
» Wikwiki, What?
» Replacing Billboard, Bestseller Lists and Editors With Robots
» Hi-Fi Design With CSS
» Blogging Next: Where Personal Publishing Goes From Here
» Bloggie Awards Ceremony (if either Gothamist or Satan’s Laundromat won, I was to accept the award on their behalf. unfortunately neither won in any category that they were nominated.

Last night I sort of planned to go to the New York City Photobloggers event at the SoHo Apple Store, but sort of just wanted to go home and crawl into bed. I ended up stopping by on the way home and staying for the whole thing. It was fun to see the people behind the NYC photoblogs I read explain what they do and why they do it and what their techniques are. There were a ton of people there, so many that the Apple Store staff was getting annoyed. Some people I knew others I met for the first time. Jen baked cookies the night before and shared them with Tien and Dahlia and I (they were delicious!). Also, nice to meet Chris G. after the event. Thanks for introducing yourself, dude. And good to see WhatISee + girlfriend again.

After the presentation everyone headed over to Merc Bar. Jason Kottke was there and I knew it’d be my last chance at meeting the ever-elusive man behind the site, so I introduced myself. He said that he didn’t know if he should even be speaking to me. He’s still sore about the whole tator tot hotdish thing. It was good to see my nerdy friends one last time – Dahlia, Jen, Jake, Corie, Mike – you’ll have to let me know if you’re ever in Chicago! And, Jake, I’m going to hold you to that “If it doesn’t work out in Chicago you can stay with us” drunken offer you made!
