In grand family tradition of playing bar games for 40th birthday parties, we all gathered last weekend to celebrate Chad’s big birthday and played Jeopardy: Chad Edition. Remember, for Brian’s party there was the Pub Crawl Olympics and for Jill’s there was Survivor Wrigleyville.

Jeopardy Team Representatives: Carrie, Limey, Ted

For Chad’s 40th birthday Jen rented out the beer garden at Fizz, but since it was raining, we were in a heated tent. We paid $35 for all the drinks we could drink for 4 hours and Jen arranged for some really delicious food to be served as well. At the appointed time, we all gathered to play Jeopardy. When we arrived Jen had given us each a number: 1, 2 or 3. This was to sort people into 3 teams. I was on Team 2: Team Burrito House. We chose Limey to be our team representative. When the answers were presented, Limey had to yell Burrito House to buzz in with the correct question. The other teams and reps were Ted for Team Guthries, Team 1, and Carrie (and later Danny) for Team Syracuse.

Getting intense!

These were the categories – For the Jeopardy round there was The Man and His Bans, Potent Potables, and Movies & Music. In Double Jeopardy there was Chad’s Sports Follies, Brushes With Fame, and He’s Had a Job or Two. The Final Jeopardy category was Location, Location, Location and the question was about how many places Chad has lived in Chicago. Jill and Brian constructed the Jeopardy board. Jill played Vannah White, flipping the answers open, while Brian did his best Alex Trebec, reading the answers off. Jen was the scorekeeper.

Chad had to charade out one of the Jeopardy answers.

Final Jeopardy

The game got really heated with everyone screaming to ring in and shouting answers. Before Final Jeopardy my team, Team Burrito House, was in the lead by far! We could not mess this up! Well, leave it to Limey…. he wagered something like $4,000 more than we even had, which seems to be breaking the rules to me, and then we lost everything, and then some, when no one on our team know how many places Chad lived in. Wah wah wahhhh…

Cousin & Todd

Baltimore Bomb

Baltimore Bombs

Jill & Dallas

Chad’s high school friend Todd flew into town from Maryland and introduced us to a new shot called the Ravens Bomb. Well, when he’s tailgating at football games he calls it that, but we were opting to call it the Baltimore Bomb. In Baltimore they drop a grape vodka shot into a cup of Red Bull energy drink. At Fizz they only had Monster energy drink, so we used that. Check out the awesome custom shot glasses Fizz had. Perfect for bombs. As for the Baltimore Bomb? It tasted awesome. The grape vodka tasted just like grape soda. Todd did warn me that they will sneak up on you if you are not careful, but I only had two. They were flowing pretty readily, though. I think they did sneak up on some people. Or… it could have been the other bombs…

Chad’s Birthday Cheesecakes

Dessert: Carbombs or Cheesecake?

Of course a night out with all these guys is not complete without Irish Car Bombs. Right as Trent was ordering a round, Jen was in the other room gathering people for cake! Ed (remember The Baked Escape) made two white chocolate raspberry swirl cheesecakes (with a chocolate cookie crust) for the party. So delicious. I’ve had this one a few times. It never disappoints. Just as the cake was being cut the Irish Car Bombs arrived. So, choose your poison: Cheesecake or booze. Or both. Why not? Actually, I only had a tiny sliver of the cake and passed on the bombs.

Todd & Brian

Dancing around the birthday boy.

After this, I don’t know what happened. I didn’t feel very drunk, but there was a lot of dancing. And Ed sent me photos of things this week that I only vaguely remember happening. So yeh. Kind of proud that us old people can still have a good time!

Ricochet’s Tavern

October 30th, 2010 · No Comments

Dallas’s side of the family – Caroline & Cory

After our cooking class at The Chopping Block we headed out to go to a bar in Lincoln Square. I’d sort of intended to go to Tiny Lounge in North Center, then someone suggested that we bar hop our way there. As we walked down Lincoln Avenue all of the bars were so packed that we could hardly walk in, let alone sit all 10 of us together. And then we walked past the dive bar, Ricochet’s Tavern. No one had really intended for Ricochet’s to be our after-party, but it wasn’t packed and there was plenty of space for us to all sit together. It did the trick.

Jessica & Kelly – Dangerous Duo!

Jess set up a game. Kelly kept score.

Jess G asking questions

Jeannette got me a vodka + lemon shot. She obviously wasn’t there during the vodka lemonade Summer of Rachelle!

Vodka & Lemon wedge. Blech!

Jess G surprised me with a game that she planned ahead of time. She asked Dallas 20 questions and got the answers. The game was for me to answer the questions and see if our answers matched. Or, more like, to answer the questions in the way I thought Dallas would have answered them. Each of my friends was to say how many answers they thought I’d get right. The winner got to do a celebratory shot with me. Oh. And? I had to drink a shot for every answer I got wrong.

Rachelle & Jess

Long distance apple pucker shots from Ted

More questions!

More shots!

Also? A bunch of the questions were really obscure. How old is Dallas’s oldest pair of underwear? And a bunch of the questions he answered “I don’t know.” Or said the answer then said, “She won’t know this.” Meaning I drank a lot of shots. At one point the bartender said “You’re going to kill that girl” because every 5 minutes my friends were up at the bar buying another shot.

Hilarious!

Something is hilarious!

Interspersed with the questions, I had to do a bachelorette scavenger hunt. First I had to find a guy in the bar named Phil. There weren’t any. I even asked the bouncer who was checking IDs. But funny thing…. right after we asked him, like the next guy coming in was named Phil!

Asking some dudes if anyone is named Phil. They lied and said YES.

Looking for a guy named Phil.

PHIL!!

Kelly made me drink Irish whiskey.

Then? I had to find a penny from the year that Dallas and I met: 2004. Funny thing… Phil had the penny! I found out later on he was set up. It was really Amanda that had the penny. What a let down! I thought Phil was my go-to guy.

Amanda setting up a trick!

Asking guys if they had a penny from 2004. The year Dallas and I met.

Penny from 2004?

No, but this guy had funny stories.

Everyone wants a photo with the bachelorette

See?

Jill made me drink butterscotch schnapps

And peach schnapps.

I think I had 7 shots total. The bartender told my friends they were going to kill me.

When I had to find an unused condom, guess who I asked? Phil, my go-to guy! But he didn’t have one. And get this, I talked to every guy in Ricochet’s. No one had a condom. We were not asking to take it… we just wanted to see one. Not one guy!! Shame, shame.

Help me find a condom

Sean? I put him to work trying to find a condom.

Do you have a condom?

Do you have a condom?

Do you have a condom? No, but I’m flattered you asked.

At the end of the night Kristin and Jill tied at guessing how many questions I’d get right: 7.

We asked Dallas 20 questions. How many do you think Rachelle will answer correctly?

Kristin couldn’t drink any more because of her medication so she somehow recruited Amanda to drink her celebratory shot for her. I have never seen Amanda drink before this night and I surely had never seen her do a shot. Luckily, Cory took a quick video of this momentous occasion:

Winning Shots. Jill and Kristin tied for the win. Amanda drank Kristin’s shot for her. Pigs flew.

Leftover shot!

Good Luck, Erika!

March 16th, 2010 · 2 Comments

Last Friday we took Erika out to English for her last day at Roundarch. It was a fun time talking to all my coworkers… about not work stuff.. Everyone was drinking these schmancy beers by St. Peter’s Brewery. They were delicious. I’m going to have to look for them at the liquor store next time. And they come in these old, 1800s, style bottles.

And this happened:

And that’s all I remember. Just kidding. T-Money DID buy a LOT of drinks, though.

The night actually went way, way, way later than I’d anticipated. Somehow I found myself at Arabia Hookah Lounge in Noble Square until 2 in the morning! I never smoked hookah before, so I thought I’d give it a try. I shared the mango flavor with Josh and Anjum and Marlena shared apple. I’m glad I tried it once, but my throat was so sore the day after. I’ll probably never do it again. Ugh! Fun night, though.

Catching Up With Old Friends at Simone’s

February 8th, 2010 · 2 Comments

Matt was back in town last week so on Wednesday he got a bunch of people together at Simone’s in Pilsen. Matt and I used to work together at FeedBurner and Google and has since moved to Seattle, so it was good to see him again. A few of my other coworkers from those places that I hadn’t seen for some time also came and it was fun to catch up.

Eric, Jessie, Alden, Rachelle, Joe, Jessica, Matt

I also got to see Blagica, who I still keep in touch with online, but don’t get to see in person much any more.

Simone’s has a great beer list, which we sampled heavily. Matt also ordered up an assortment of food like empanadas, pizzas, fries and mozzarella sticks. Later on after a lot of people had left, Sam, who was taking care of us that night, appeared like this: Flaming.

And Matt looked something like this: Day-am!

He blew the fire out and we drank the shots and they were delicious. Sam’s own creation, they tasted like black forest cake. I can’t remember all of the ingredients, but there was Bailey’s and Grand Marnier on the top (which is the part that was lit on fire). Sam would then sprinkle cinnamon over them. Can you see it?

It looks like the shots aren’t on fire because of the flash, but they are. Look again.

We had a couple round of these shots. They were so good. Alden wanted to drink a pint glass of them. But he didn’t.

After a few rounds Matt started to look like this. (He had just flown in that day on a 6 a.m. flight!)

And the bar started to look alien.

Fun night. Nice catching up with friends. And I liked Simone’s, too. It’s somewhat hard to get to, but if you live down by Pilsen or the neighboring hoods you should definitely check it out. The owners of Simone’s are the ones opening Nice Slice Pizza Bar at the end of my block, so I’m very hopeful now.

That Went Downhill Fast

May 25th, 2008 · 3 Comments

One night last week Alden and Justin and I decided to go out for a nice nostalgic dinner at De Cero. When we worked at FeedBurner in the West Loop, we’d always go to De Cero when new people were hired or anytime we wanted to go for a nice lunch.

Justin was in town for the first time since he moved to San Francisco so we caught up a lot on what’s been happening since he left. It was a good time, but 2 pitchers of margaritas and 4 shots each of Petron Silver later and we were at the cheesiest bar ever singing karaoke!

Also, fyi, if you’ve never actually paid for anything at De Cero, like us because we were always there for work functions, it’s really expensive! Like really expensive. Like $35 for one pitcher of margaritas and more than $10 per shot. I’m surprised that I wasn’t shocked sober when we got the bill. Instead I just ordered The Pain Killer at the next bar and told them to make it strong.

Singing the Humpty Dance with Alden. I thought that waving my hands in the air like I just didn’t care would get the crowd worked up. Something tells me it did not.

I was really excited to sing What I Got by Sublime.
