Liz on the Food Network

After Killian and Liz’s wedding in June, they honeymooned on Maui and Oahu. When they got back to Chicago Killian told me that they met Rachael Ray. She was at Rum Fire, a restaurant at the Sheraton Waikiki, and was filming a show. I didn’t realize that they were actually filmed for the show.

Tonight Dallas and I were watching Juno on HBO. It was the second time we saw the movie and at the end I could barely restrain Dallas from grabbing the remote and changing the channel. It’s not his fault, though. He has some disease where he has to hold the remote and he has to flip the channels all the time. This time it actually was a good thing when he flipped it to Food Network. We caught the end of a show called Rachael’s Vacation and it was an episode featuring the Rum Fire. Not only can you see Killian and Liz sitting at a table behind Rachael and her husband, but Liz also had a small clip where she described the ambiance of the restaurant. Killian and Liz missed the show tonight so this post is for them.

Side Note 1: How disturbing is Rachael Ray’s cleavage in this clip? Her wardrobe stylist should be fired.
Side Note 2: I drank a lot of pina coladas at the Sheraton Waikiki pool in 2007.

Night Views From Columbia Yacht Club

June 10th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Last few photos from Killian & Liz’s wedding. The views from the yacht club really were beautiful. You could see the sailboats and the lake, the skyline, navy pier, etc. These photos were all taken from the southern-facing deck of the ship.

After the reception we headed to Chi Bar, which is located at the Sheraton and was where some of the wedding party were staying.

The last day of our vacation was last Saturday. That afternoon we flew out of Honolulu on a redeye and landed in Chicago early Sunday morning.

The morning of our last day I got up early and packed all our stuff. Then I took a walk around Waikiki trying to soak it all up one last time.

All vacation Kathy had been building up these malasadas from Leonard’s Bakery in Honolulu so we stopped by to try some on the last day. Malasadas are portugeuse fried dough….. and soooooooooo yummy. They tasted like they were fresh out of the fryer when we ordered them. I scarfed down 1 1/2 in like 3 seconds and had another one when we were at the airport.

Finally, we shopped around and went to the old Dole Cannery, which is a kind of crappy shopping center, to kill time before our flight.

That’s it. Im sad to be done with vacation, both the real vacation and the virtual one here!

One day Dallas and I spent an entire day just hanging around Waikiki.. at the beach, walking around, shopping.

The beach that was across from our hotel was Kuhio Beach, named after Prince Jonah Kuhio, who was prince of the reigning House of Kalakaua when the Kingdom of Hawaii was overthrown in 1893. There were a ton of tourists, for sure, but on the pier there were a lot of local kids hanging out and boarding and jumping off the pier.

For lunch, even though we both prefer In-N-Out Burger as our favorite West Coast burger joint, we had Jack in the Box Sourdough Jacks and it hit the spot. Reminded me a lot of when I lived in San Diego. The first account I worked on when I moved was Jack in the Box. Coming from Wisconsin, I didn’t even know what it was.

Later we walked up and down Kalakaua Ave. and did some shopping. I got some shirts at the Quicksilver store in the International Marketplace and a few other things at Lush.

In the afternoon we walked through the Honolulu Zoo. It’s an alright zoo, not great, but only like $6 (only $4 Kama’aina rate) to get into and worth a stroll around to see the animals and flowers. There was a lot of construction going on at the zoo which might have distracted from the overall ambiance, but probably guarantees that it will be getting better soon!

The thing about Waikiki.. it’s gorgeous and so well manicured and all that but it’s totally created for tourists. And is swarming with tourists. Which sort of drives me a little crazy. There is an ABC souvineer store on EVERY BLOCK. For a relaxing vacation I much prefer Kaua’i. Kaua’i has all of the touristy things that Waikiki and Oahu has, but it’s not so “in your face”. You can hike, you can go on tours, you can rent a bike.. but it’s not there every where you turn. And the beaches and countryside are much more natural, the towns are much smaller, there are way fewer people. Nice and relaxing .. although I think if I had to live there I’d go batty.

For dinner we went to Alewa Heights, where Dallas’ Uncle Bob and Auntie Helen live. Their daughter Kala, Grandma, Uncle Mel and Aunt Wendie were also there. We had local food – lau lau, kalua pig, rice, lomi lomi, poke, purple sweet potatoes, haupia, and lemon cake. It was nice to meet everyone, they’re all really nice, and Grandma said she remembered me from last year.
