Hanging out at the Sheraton Waikiki

One day we decided to shake things up and hang out at the Sheraton Waikiki, where Jen, Chad, Cousin and Kristin were staying, instead of the Moana Surfrider, where Dallas and I were. Actually, Dallas was golfing with BJ that day, so it was really just me walking down to the Sheraton.

Sheraton Waikiki Infinity Pool

The Royal Hawaiian is right next to the Sheraton and last time we stayed there one of the Sheraton pools was under construction. Well, the construction is done, and what has been revealed is a big, beautiful, adults-only infinity pool connected to the Edge of Waikiki pool bar.

Limey in the pool.

Another highlight of the day was that Limey arrived. In true Limey fashion, he immediately made a bunch of friends… a married local couple enjoying a “staycation” at the Sheraton and another, a waitress at the Edge, used to live in Chicago just a few blocks from Limey. Once Limey got into the infinity pool, he never left. Why would he? You can float right up to the counter and get beer and food service!

Shrimp cobb salad.

I had a pretty delicious shrimp cobb salad at the counter by the pool while I chatted with Limey and his new friends. And then Tien and Shannan arrived! They had been in Hawaii longer than us but were island hopping around Maui and the Big Island. So we caught up, did a little swimming. Fun!

Chillin’ in Waikiki

March 8th, 2011 · No Comments

On our first real day of vacation I woke up early and hit the gym. The Moana Surfrider gym overlooks the International Marketplace, so there was never a dull moment. After the gym I shopped at our favorite, ABC Store, for sunscreen and snacks. Then it was off to Honolulu Coffee Company, located inside our hotel. I got a latte and was going to also buy us some breakfast, but it was here that I remembered how inflated Waikiki prices are. For example, I buy Fage yogurt in Chicago for $1.99 per cup. At Honolulu Coffee Co. they were selling the same thing for $4.50! I’d expect them to charge a little more, but 2.5x? No thanks.

After all this running around, Dallas and I did a lot of this:

I had a mimosa, lava flows, and an iced coffee drink with Kona Coffee, Bailey’s Irish Cream, Kahlua, Frangelico, coconut cream and vanilla. There was one other really delicious one that was basically a Kahlua Colada. Dallas drank local beers.

And a lot of this:

The exclusive beach access at the Royal Hawaiian was free to all registered guests. At the Moana Surfrider, it was $30 to rent the beach umbrella all day with up to four chairs, but the plus side was that they would bring drinks and food right to you. At the Royal Hawaiian you had to get up and go to the beach bar and couldn’t bring it out to the beach. I balked at shelling out $30 at first, but after you’re settled in and have your spot and people coming by to serve you, it’s totally worth it. Great way to enjoy total relaxation!

We watched this catamaran, Na Hoku II, sail in and out all day. It’s a booze cruise, so watching the characters load and unload was pretty entertaining.

I walked around a bit on the beach. Oh, and at one point in the afternoon, I was swimming just out from the hotel and a large sea turtle kept popping his head up just a few feet away from me. It was so awesome! Swimming with a wild sea turtle! I’d done this before, but I would have thought that Waikiki would be too busy for a sea turtle’s style, but I guess not!

And aside from that we got lunch and I went on a short walk down Kalakaua Avenue, and that’s about it. Great first day of vacation!

Later on Jen, Chad, Kristin, and Cousin arrived. We took them to one of our favorite Waikiki restaurants, Sansei, where we gorged on seafood. By coincidence, Kristin and Cousin’s uncle was in Honolulu for work, so he met us for dinner too. Jen, Chad, Kristin and Cousin were staying just up the street at the Sheraton Waikiki, so after dinner we had drinks at the hotel bar, Rumfire. Kristin and Cousin were out for the night, but Jen, Chad, Dallas and I enjoyed a few. It was an early night, everyone was still adjusting and very tired.

Killian & Liz on the Food Network

After Killian and Liz’s wedding in June, they honeymooned on Maui and Oahu. When they got back to Chicago Killian told me that they met Rachael Ray. She was at Rum Fire, a restaurant at the Sheraton Waikiki, and was filming a show. I didn’t realize that they were actually filmed for the show.

Tonight Dallas and I were watching Juno on HBO. It was the second time we saw the movie and at the end I could barely restrain Dallas from grabbing the remote and changing the channel. It’s not his fault, though. He has some disease where he has to hold the remote and he has to flip the channels all the time. This time it actually was a good thing when he flipped it to Food Network. We caught the end of a show called Rachael’s Vacation and it was an episode featuring the Rum Fire. Not only can you see Killian and Liz sitting at a table behind Rachael and her husband, but Liz also had a small clip where she described the ambiance of the restaurant. Killian and Liz missed the show tonight so this post is for them.

Side Note 1: How disturbing is Rachael Ray’s cleavage in this clip? Her wardrobe stylist should be fired.
Side Note 2: I drank a lot of pina coladas at the Sheraton Waikiki pool in 2007.

After lunch, Allison, Susan and I hung out at the Sheraton Waikiki pool and drank more fruity drinks. I had a pina colada and a pina colada with macademia nut liquor (can’t remember what they called that drink) and some beer. Not all at once. John joined us soon after we settled in and Dallas joined us a while after that. A bit later Jordan stopped by with his friends Koa and Chad. Before I knew it, it was time for John and Susan to pack and get ready to go home. Our vacation was coming to an end. Frownface.
