Crab Cakes, Haddock, Clams Linguine, Scrod :: Marshside, East Dennis, Cape Cod

After going to Eden, Michaela came over to our house and we spent the day at the beach (what else is new!?). Then we went home and got ready and went out for dinner at Marshside in East Dennis. I heard that not too long ago they totally brought down the whole restaurant and rebuilt it. It’s really pretty. Big decks outside (too bad there wasn’t any outdoor seating) and inside was kind of a modern rustic, if such thing exists. There were many, many windows through which you could see the marsh, hence the name Marshside. All of the windows kind of made it so that the marsh was very much a part of the decor of the restaurant.

Michaela and I shared a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and Julie and Jess shared a red wine at the bar while we waited to be seated at a table. We shared dinner appetizers. I ordered the crab cakes (of course), Michaela got the Cesar salad, Jess got the clam chowder, and Julie got seafood stew. The crab cakes were so much better than I’d had a few days earlier at Skippy’s Pier 1. The clam chowder was really good. Definitely better than Skippy’s but we still favored The Skipper’s chowdah. In hindsight, we really did not enjoy Skippy’s, which is a shame because Jess’s aunt Mau, who we stayed with my last trip to the Cape, works there.. but she’s a bartender.. nothing to do with the food.

Jess and Michaela both got Scrod entrees, I got the haddock and Julie got clams linguine. To be honest, I found the dinner we had at Colombo’s to be more memorable as far as how the food tasted. I know haddock is kind of a bland fish, but the way this was prepared.. if you didn’t take a bite right on the sauce, there was no flavor at all. However, the mashed potatoes were delicious. Jess really enjoyed the scrod and we applauded her for ordering it. She had never really liked fish, but is trying to expand her horizons because a lot of it is mental. I think Michaela and Julie enjoyed their food, too.

Dallas’ Birthday Dinner @ El Barco

December 11th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Dallas @ El Barco
Dallas, El Barco, East Village, Chicago

Yesterday was Dallas’ birthday so we went out for dinner at El Barco with a few close friends. Dallas got the red snapper that he always gets except they were out of the usual and he had to get the extra large red snapper for two. He still had no problem eating it all, not that anyone was worried.

Four of us split the Big Platter of Grilled Stuff for Three. We ordered the Big Platter of Grilled Stuff* for Three even though we had four people because once I got Big Platter of Grilled Stuff for Two and shared it with Dallas’ dad and it was too much. Even when we ordered down one last night, we still took some home. The BPoGSfT has steak, crab legs, chicken, grilled fish, fried fish, calamari, octopus, shrimp, mussels, onions, broccoli and potatoes and comes with sides of rice and beans.

When we got the bill at the end we were only $14 away from the amount you need to spend to get a free shirt (yeh, it was kind of a large bill with all the drinks and appetizers and entrees), so we each ordered one more beer so Dallas could get a free El Barco polo shirt. Trent expects to see him wearing it next summer when they go golfing.

*Not the real name of the entree.

Whisky Dinner @ David Burke’s Primehouse

Amuse Bouche

Last week Wednesday, before I went to California and before my family was visiting, Chuck and I met up with Alpana Singh and her husband Charles Blackstone at a wine tasting she was hosting at Osteria Via Stato. Afterwards she had made dinner arrangements for us at David Burke’s Primehouse and also invited Martin Duffy, a whisky expert.

Butter

Popover

Marty made special arrangements to bring his own high-end whiskys to dinner and spent a lot of time describing each one and educating us about whisky and scotch, how it’s made, how it tastes, the smell, where it comes from, it’s history, etc. I know some of the others at dinner knew more about whisky, but for me it was really a learning experience. I think whisky will have to be an acquired taste for me and I should probably keep at it, but I like trying new things and learning all about whisky that night was really fun for me.

Cold Seafood

Onion Ring Tower

I must also talk about David Burke’s Primehouse. It was divine. I don’t eat very much steak at all, but I thought it was fantastic. I loved the decor, the lighting, the tables, and of course the food. The service was pretty great, but because we had special arrangements, I can’t really speak for how it is on a regular night. I mean, David Burke himself came out to our table to say hello. Awesome.

Bone-In Filet

Caol Ila

Glenkinchie

One thing I really liked about Primehouse even before I set foot in the restaurant was the fact that the restaurant is named after a bull on a ranch in Kentucky that sires all of the cows who are then butchered to make the steaks used in David Burke’s restaurants. The bull’s name is Prime (and he has his own website here). It’s kind of morbid to think about, but I was really digging the fact that David Burke is so into his ingredients and that involved in knowing where they come from. Also, an interesting fact we learned that night: If Prime were to die today, there’s enough of him (his sperm?) in storage that they could continue making steaks with his lineage for about 50 years.

Lagavulin

Chocolate Mousse

Lollipop Tree

Here’s what it comes down to – David Burke’s Primehouse is pricey, but I thought it was really worth it. If you’re in Chicago and have a special occasion coming up and you love steak, why not try it out instead of the normal go-tos like Morton’s and Gibson’s?

Glenn’s Diner Seafood Restaurant

Glenn’s Diner
Glenn’s Diner, North Center, Chicago

The last time I saw Rob was about a year ago when he was in town to do the race to Mackinac Island. He and Killian do it every year and this year he’s in town again for the same thing.

We all wanted to get together to go to dinner on Friday night while Rob was in town and Killian suggested Glenn’s Diner. I had never even heard of it but I was down for a low-key diner. Turns out Glenn’s isn’t much like a diner at all and that they specialize in seafood. Really good, fresh seafood.

The owner of Glenn’s, Glenn Fahlstrom used to be at Davis Street Fish Market in Evanston before he opened is own place. It’s obvious that he knows his seafood. We had blue crabcakes and seared scallops for appetizers. For our entrees, Liz, Christina and I all got the Pretzelled Walleye (encrusted with pretzels and pan fried), Dallas got the Kajiki Blue Marlin (chargrilled with creamy scampi sauce), and Killian got the Copper River Salmon (only available for 3 weeks each year). Everything was cooked perfectly. Dallas and I really enjoyed it, but we both love fresh seafood, so that’s not surprising. We’ll definitely be back.

Oh, and Glenn’s does serve breakfast (all day) and lunch. And one of the things on the breakfast menu that they’re kind of known for is the cereal with free seconds and thirds. So, they have all these cereals on display behind their bar.

El Barco, Take 2 3

On Monday night, Jordan and George’s last night in town, Dallas wanted to take them to El Barco. Danny had never been there either, so he came along too. Yum! Danny and Dallas had the big, whole snapper, Jordan had some carne asada and stuffes chile rellenos, and George and I shared this mixed grill. It was mounds and mounds of grilled seafood and potatoes and fish and chicken and steak. So good!

These photos kind of blow because we were outside and I couldn’t see. I have better photos of El Barco here and here.
