Ten Years

September 11th, 2011 · No Comments

Photo I took of a West Village firehouse about 3 weeks after the World Trade Center attacks. Larger

Ten years ago today I was living by the beach in San Diego and planning my move to New York City. I woke up on West Coast time and the first thing I did was check my email. I had a message from my mom begging me not to move to New York. Odd. She had been really supportive of the move up until then. I mindlessly turned on the TV and saw that the first of the twin towers was down. I was so confused. What was going on? An accident? Then the second went down. Oh no.

It was a scary time. My work’s headquarters were in Manhattan only about a mile from World Trade Center. I remember spending the day, make that dayS, with friends. I remember getting a call from the New York office explaining how they understood, I don’t want to move now. Well, the truth is I still did want to move. And I did. My first day in Manhattan was 18 days after the attacks.

I was living down in the Village, a mile and a half from the Trade Center and whole areas of the city down there were still blocked off. Imagine a new city – New York City, walking around, getting confused, getting lost, photocopied pictures of missing people posted on light posts, firehouse memorials, walking into barricades. I remember sitting at work and all you could smell was burning. There was devastation everywhere, in the place and in the people, but there was hope. I have never once regretted moving to New York. I’m so thankful I did.

Never forget. We’re all in this together. My thoughts are with the victims and their families on this day and always.

The Black Crowes at the Riv

December 8th, 2008 · 4 Comments

On Friday night I met up with Chad, Trent, Limey, Brian, and Jill at Fiesta Mexicana in Uptown. We had tickets for The Black Crowes at the Riviera and were getting some pre-show dinner. I’d been to Fiesta Mexicana in Lincoln Park, but never to the Uptown location. I got the vegetarian fajitas, which doesn’t sound like anything extraordinary, but it was fantastic. You get this whole skillet full of grilled onions, peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes and broccoli. More than I could ever eat, but I had Jill and Limey there to help me out. Everyone loved it.

On to the show. I’d seen The Black Crowes 7 or 8 years ago when I lived in San Diego. We used to go to this street festival called Street Scene and they were there. It was a fantastic show and I knew just about every song they played. This time around, not so much. I guess they’ve released a few albums since then and I haven’t kept up. On Friday they barely played any old songs… I only knew 2 songs the whole night. The band is obviously very talented and has a huge following, but I didn’t enjoy the show as much as last time I saw them. I still had fun, though.

Afterward we went to Fat Cat in Uptown and were there til close. I had a great night. Trent, Chad and I shared a cab home. They were dropped off first and then my cabbie screwed up and accidentally took me almost to Lincoln Square. I wasn’t paying attention because I was calling Dallas. He was out with Killian and was on his way home, too. I finally got home. I was so tired. What happened next could have been a dream, except I had photos to prove it wasn’t. Behold:

Dallas had stopped at Susie’s Drive-In and gotten a foot-long cheese steak, which we shared, and a taco shell full of cheese fries. I was the happiest girl in the world when I saw those. So delicious. And then I fell asleep. Possibly with “liquid cheese” still on my face.

I was afraid to go to In-N-Out because I used to love it when I lived in San Diego, but I haven’t had it since I moved away from there in 2001 and I was afraid it wouldn’t live up to my memory. Man am I relieved that it was just as good as I remembered. I just love the fresh ingredients and the quality of the food compared to other fast-food burger chains. Can’t be beat!

Dogsitting Drake & Cortez

Waiting for Dinner, Roscoe Village, Chicago

I’m dogsitting for Jen and Chad while they’re in San Diego for a long weekend. It’s a lot easier this time, since we only live a block away from each other now. I don’t want to curse my luck, but so far this weekend has gone off without a hitch, without any got-locked-out-in-the-rain or Drake-peed-the-bed-while-I-was-sleeping-in-it drama, which means it has been a good weekend.

That’s HOT

Heaven on Seven, River North, Chicago

Last night we saw the movie Dave Chappelle’s Block Party* and afterwards ate at Heaven on Seven since it is in the same building as the theater. This is a photo of all of the hot sauces that were on out table to choose from. I think Dallas went with plain old Tabasco, though, and I didn’t try any of them. I’d never been to Heaven on Seven, I haven’t even had cajun food since I moved to Chicago. I was afraid the line was going to be crazy because it looked nuts when I saw it featured on Check Please, but there wasn’t any wait at all. When I lived in San Diego there was a cajun restaurant nearby (Chateau Orleans) and when I lived in New York one of my apartments was a block from Delta Grill so I’d go there. But in Chicago, not so much. Yummy. I had the Etouffee of the Day, which had crawfish, shrimp, andouille and who knows what other mystery meats in it.

*DCBP was great. I had a fun time watching it. Roger Ebert says “I’ve seen better comedy films and better concert films” and he’s right, but the combination is good. And Dave Chappelle comes off as like a “regular” dude who really cares about people. Plus he’s like to the point where he could walk up to the mic and say “toaster” or any random thing and everyone would laugh their ass off because IT’S DAVE CHAPPELLE! It didn’t hurt that Kanye West, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Talib Kweli, Dead Prez, Jill Scoot, the Fugees (Wyclef!), and the Roots were all in the movie. I saw the Roots live once out in a California desert with Outkast, Moby, New Order and tons of other acts.. Paul Oakenfold.. but that’s another story.
