These were some of my favorite photos from Chicagoist’s First Birthday Happy Hour. It was amazing to get the Chicagoist team together with all of our readers and fans and to think that just over a year ago I’d just moved here and didn’t know anything about anything and now we’re running a successful website that’s challenging the way the local traditional media does things.

This morning the Chicagoist staff & their families got together at Wishbone for brunch. I was nervous because we were a big group and I was afraid they wouldn’t seat us, but we went early (10 am) and I got there even 15-20 minutes earlier than that to give the Wishbone staff a heads up. They were awesome. 13 of us plus 2 babies were seated in 15 or 20 minutes. And our waitress was great. And the food there is awesome.

I think this is the largest staff get-together we’ve ever had. It was cool to get almost everyone together in one room. Aaron took a photo that was unfortunately 1) after Kevin, Dexter and Leah left and 2) very bright. Still, it’s nice.

Oh! And, since I sat in the middle of the tables, I got to talk about both cigars and babies!

Last night was Amy and Scott‘s going away party at Howl at the Moon, the dueling piano bar. They’re not really going anywhere but their holiday break is over and they’re resuming their grad school studies so pretty much we won’t see them for a few months. Free and 50 cent drinks, free appetizers, sing along songs.

binderclip.jpgJulia: “Can I see the photo you just took?”
Me: “Yeh! Oh. No. Wait. Only if you have a paper clip.. or a toothpick?”

And then Mr. X, a friend of Mr. Smith’s, walks up. This guy, whose identity is protected, is demonstrating to us the benefits of using a binder clip as a money clip instead of using an actual money clip. He thinks the ladies will think he’s resourceful even though we tell him the ladies will just think he’s cheap. I asked to borrow the binder clip and then I took it apart and used it on my camera. Mr. X saves the night.

If you didnt recognize me at the party on Friday, I was the girl trying to operate her camera with a paperclip and a toothpick! Or maybe it was because I didn’t wear my New Year’s Eve uniform (2002, 2003). I didn’t feel like I was doing it at the time, but I must had drank a ton more than usual. My first day of the New Year was horrible, and I’m hoping it’s not an indicator of the year to come!
