Salad

I eat a lot of salads. Lately, now that we have a cafeteria at work, I eat a small salad with every lunch. And probably one or two times per week for dinner I have an entree salad for a meal.

I go back and forth about making salads at home, though. For a while I’ll think it’s too much work to shop for ingredients and then to keep them fresh and eat them up before I get sick of them. And then for a while I’ll have everything on hand and ready to make salads whenever I want. Lately has been the latter.

My favorite salad as of late is made with romaine, mandarin oranges, edamame, toasted almonds, green onion, grilled chicken, and chow mien noodles. To finish it off we’ve been topping the salad with Dallas’ mom’s homemade sesame dressing that we keep in a cruet in the fridge.

By the way, I got these pineapple-shaped salad tossers made from kamani wood the last time we were in Hawaii.

Finished!

On Sunday all of Dallas’ family who were in town and who live in the suburbs came to our house for a (mostly) Korean dinner. Dallas’ parents, George & Kathy, & Auntie Laura came first. I was trying to finish up making some cookies when they arrived, but once Kathy & Auntie Laura got into the kitchen I pretty much had to surrender. I was fine with that, though. I knew the food they would be making was going to be fantastic and that they needed to do what they needed to do. Kathy was the ringleader and she gave everyone else jobs to do. In the end, Dallas’ whole immediate family, plus some Aunties and his sister’s friends and Danny all helped in making the meal. It was fun to have everyone involved.

Auntie Laura had taken George and Kathy to both a Korean market and Mitsuwa before coming to our house, so they brought all the ingredients they needed. For dinner we had oriental chicken salad, kalbi ribs, ahi sashimi, wontons, spinach namul, Hawaiian mac salad, and probably even more things that I’m not remembering right now.

I was the most excited about Dallas’ mom’s famous wontons. I’ve had a lot of the other foods we ate that day before, but not the wontons. Whenever Dallas visits his parents he always raves about them, but they don’t exactly travel well, so I’ve never had them. I special requested wontons and Dallas’ mom was nice enough to agree to make them at our house even though we had to make special arrangements to get the proper cooking gear here to do it. George and Danny ended up setting up an electric wok out on our porch so that our kitchen wouldn’t get full of oil. And extra thanks to Danny, who sat out there in the hot sun over a big wok of hot oil all day to cook the wontons. They were delicious.

Jessica and I met up with Jeannette, Yvan and Tien in Long Island City, Queens. Last year when we went to LIC Jeannette and Yvan’s new condo was still being built and they still lived in DUMBO, Brooklyn. This year the new condo was finished and they’re finally all moved in. They’ve still got some unpacking to do, but the place looks great. Happy they’re finally settled in.

Just like last year we had brunch at Tournesol, a French restaurant. Tien and Yvan both have Canon cameras and they brought along some of their toys so I could play. These photos at Tournesol were taken with Tien’s Canon EF 50mm f1.4. Yvan just told me today that this lens is on sale at Amazon and I’m really thinking about getting it. I was finding it difficult to use for certain things, but the portraits were turning out so great that it makes me want to learn to work with the lens. Also, it’s a fixed length (no zoom) and I’d like to get one of those. I want to take a photography class and a fixed lens is always recommended for that. Tien said it’s because when you’re not messing with the zoom and stuff like that it makes you learn your camera better and it also teaches you about composition.
