I’m on a Boat!

August 10th, 2009 · 5 Comments

Killian grew up sailing on Lake Michigan with his dad and brothers. Remember last year? He even got married at the Columbia Yacht Club, where they dock their boat. Killian and his family do the big races, like the race from Chicago to Mackinac Island, but also do smaller Beer Can Regattas every Wednesday night.

For years Killian has invited me to go out with them on a Wednesday night and I never did. Dallas got really sick once when he went and I was afraid I would too. I’ve gotten sick on a zodiac in Hawaii and on a sailboat in the Caribbean and whale watching in San Diego, so I had a history. At Tour de Fat Jess and Killian got to talking and Killian told her about sailing and Jess was interested in going some time. Then about a week ago I saw Killian’s brother Malachy on the train and we started talking about it. Finally, I decided “enough talking!” and made plans for Jess and I to join them for sailing.

I took Dramamine ahead of time and I didn’t get sick. I had a fun time and so did Jess. I don’t know that we could tell you much about sailing.. we were just trying to stay out of the way of the action.. but I did get some great photos.

Walking Across the Island

August 28th, 2008 · No Comments

Billy, Dallas, Jessie, Diane, Ging, Lou & Rob waiting for the group to gather so we can begin the walk.

Lots of people travel by golf cart around the island.

Jessie & Josh sitting in a tree-ee. Just kidding. They are married and have 2 kids.

Dallas, Ging, Billy, Rob. Phil and his wife and baby in the back.

After Rob & Colleen’s barbecue lunch most people left. Colleen even left to go stay at her parent’s house the night before the wedding. For the most part, the people that were left were Rob and some of his friends. Rob decided to take us on a walk across the island to the “backshore”. It was a relaxing, scenic walk… maybe the fact that we took our beer “to go” helped with that. We started out on roads and then went to gravel and through the woods until we met our final destination: A World War II-era battery and bunker (more on that to come).

Night Views From Columbia Yacht Club

June 10th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Last few photos from Killian & Liz’s wedding. The views from the yacht club really were beautiful. You could see the sailboats and the lake, the skyline, navy pier, etc. These photos were all taken from the southern-facing deck of the ship.

After the reception we headed to Chi Bar, which is located at the Sheraton and was where some of the wedding party were staying.

Liz & Killian’s Wedding Rehearsal

Here comes the bride.

The bride & groom may practice kissing!

Liz and Kilian are getting married at the Columbia Yacht Club tonight. This is a preview of what will go down. Well, maybe. The wind has been so ridiculous these past few days. Tonight if it’s as windy as it was last night then the wedding will take place on the lower, tented deck of the ship (the yacht club is actually a docked ship). Dallas is a groomsman in the wedding. I’m not in the wedding party, but I’m walking him down the aisle just to balance out the boy/girl ratio. Killian and his brothers Malachy and Naoise grew up at the yacht club sailing, so to have their wedding there means a lot to them. I think it’s going to be so much fun. I can’t wait for later tonight!
