Matt’s First Visit to Chicago

Our friend Matt came to Chicago for a visit over the weekend. It was so great to see him, since it had been over a year since I’d last. Dallas saw many of our Mass. friends at Ross and Chelsea’s wedding last September, but I couldn’t attend because I was too pregnant!

Mostly Dallas and Matt went out a lot, but we also barbecued with friends at Jen and Chad’s house. Makai and Ellyza drove their cars around the yard. Actually, they mostly just sat on their cars and didn’t move! Matt has three kids who are older than Makai so he was really great. Makai wasn’t too sure about this unfamiliar Uncle barreling in at dinnertime on Thursday night, but he quickly warmed up, as you can see!

Jeannette and Yvan and Juliette came to visit and we had so much fun. I first met Juliette when she was only a month old, and have been lucky enough to hang out with her a few times since then, but this was the first time they all got to meet Makai. It was so much fun to hang out. Jeannette and Yvan and Juliette did a lot on their own while we were at work, but at night we got to spend time together and catch up. Some highlights were going to the Midnight Circus, multiple days of deep dish pizza and eating our way through Logan Square!

It was kind of crazy to have another little person running around the condo, but so interesting to see Juliette and Makai together. Where Juliette is physically petite and has a more reserved personality, Makai was big and boisterous and all up in her face. I don’t think she appreciated it much, especially when he was standing on his tippy toes to try to swipe her food off the tray of the high chair! And even though Juliette is 17 months old and Makai only 10, they are both almost the same size! I wonder if Makai is missing his new friend Juliette. Or if he’s happy to have the place back to himself! Can’t wait til they can hang out again!!!

This was at least the 7th time I’ve been to the Retro on Roscoe street festival. For many years Jen and Chad have hosted a party at their house at the same time as the fest and people have gone back and forth from fest to party all the day and night. This year was a little different with Makai. We mostly stayed at Jen and Chad’s house and only walked over to the festival for a little while to get some food. Not that Makai can’t go to the fest, but we were having a lot of fun at the house visiting with with friends and other kids, hanging out on the new yard, that we just didn’t leave for long.

Dallas was excited because the Polish stand was back and he loves to get the fully loaded Polish plate. For a while the stand wasn’t there.. like for several years! I was excited because Chad was making caipirinhas, a drink he loved on his recent trip to Brazil for World Cup.. and one that I love, but had never made myself before. And I might have had just one or two too many of them, because I ended up falling asleep and missing a going away party that I was supposed to go to at night!

Previously at Retro on Roscoe:
2012: Lots of kids, baby Rory.
2011: Polish stand disappeared! My brother’s first Cubs game earlier in the day.
2010: An explosion of strollers (and babies).
2008: Summer of Rachelle. Stephanie visiting. Pimm’s Cup = NO.
2007: Quinn is a baby. Our first year living in Roscoe Village.
2004: My first year in Chicago.
