Finally, The Pool

August 7th, 2008 · No Comments

On Wednesday Stephanie and I ran some morning errands, grilled corn and zucchini for lunch and then were finally able to go to the pool. We were at “open swim” until 3:45 p.m. and then had to get out for an hour of “parents and tots swim.” We used that time to go and get ice cream and then went back to the pool for “family swim” from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. For dinner I had a buy one get one free pizza coupon at Robey’s so we tried one pie with just pepperoni and the other with roasted portobello, sweet basil pesto, roasted garlic, and mozzarella. Delicious, as always.

Lunch. Bike. Pool. Barbecue.

July 27th, 2008 · 7 Comments

Erin got a new job and she works from home now. Since her home is a 5 minute walk from my home, on Thursday we made plans to lunch on salads from Robey’s while sitting outside in the sun. Nice time. Erin had her bike in at Roscoe Village Bikes and while we were waiting for it to get done we shopped around a bit at Roscoe Village stores. While in the bike shop I talked to them about my bike and what sorts of cruiser bikes they have. RVB doesn’t sell Electra bikes but told me about some other brands I could look into. I made note of them and thought I’d looked them up online, but ended up not doing it. I’d like to support RVB, but they didn’t have any of the bikes in stock and would have to special order what I wanted and I was afraid I wouldn’t like it or how it rides.

Hamlin Park, Lakeview, Chicago

After lunch I went and sat at our neighborhood pool for a while. It was pretty packed! I couldn’t get a lounge chair so I just laid my towel out on the cement and enjoyed the weather.

On Friday I went to the bike shop where Dallas and I originally bought our bikes, On The Route. I talked to John there a lot about replacing my Electra Townie and realized something I didn’t know before. I had a 7-speed bike and the 2008 models of the 7-speed bike don’t have all the bells and whistles my bike had, which is why my bike was so much more expensive than the 7-speeds available now. I had the internal hub shifting and a shock system and fenders, all things that the 2008 model 7-speeds don’t have. So, to get those things I’d have to downgrade to a 3-speed or upgrade to the 8-speed. I decided to upgrade. It was more expensive, but the money I’m getting from insurance will take a bite out of the price. OTR had to order my bike, which I wasn’t nervous about since John told me that the seat and the body of the bike haven’t changed so it should ride just like my old bike. The bike will arrive in a week or two and this is what it will look like:

Friday night we had a barbecue at our house. A lot of people came, about 15 or so. It was fun and I’ll admit I drank too much of the Summer of Rachelle official drink. On Saturday I was SO sick. I mean, I don’t even think it was hangover sick. I maybe was coincidentally having the stomach flu? I was still getting sick at 9 p.m. last night. There’s no way that was still a hangover. I couldn’t even take a sip of water. What a waste of a day. I don’t know what happened, but I missed Colleen and Justin’s going away party, Margaret’s Golden 26th birthday and a chance to see an afternoon showing of the Dark Knight at the IMAX with Liz and Killian. I need to remind myself that I’m almost 33, not 23.

Smoked Salmon and PDV Shrimp.. Nom Nom Nom

May 2nd, 2008 · 1 Comment

Note for Larry @ Volo, Roscoe Village, Chicago

The rain broke so I ran out to Robey‘s to get some soup and a salad. (I get the chopped chicken salad from Robey’s so much that it should be a crime.) Of course, it started pouring on my walk back. I ducked into Volo‘s doorway to avoid the worst of it and saw this sign for Larry. I find it kind of odd. The note seems to be left for someone who has a key, but it’s so formal. “Thank you for your compliance” ? And why does it say it’s “at Volo” when the sign is on the door to Volo? Seems unnecessary. The note is kind of small town-y, but that’s Roscoe Village for you… a village in a big city!

I had to look it up, PDV shrimp is peeled and deveined shrimp.

On Saturday I opened up tabs in Firefox of all the places Steph might be interested in visiting. Then I had her look at all the websites and choose. We decided to go to the Sears Tower then to the Shedd Aquarium. Bad news: When we got to the Sears Tower we were told that visibility was ZERO PERCENT. So we decided to just go to the Shedd Aquarium. Bad news: There was an hour-long line just to get into the building. Oh well. We didn’t go all that way not to do something and Steph really wanted to go to the aquarium, to see the things we didn’t see last time*, so we stood. In line. Forever.

We were excited to see the komodo dragon, and while the whole lizard exhibit was cool, the dragon was a let down. Wow. A big dragon. Next! I mean, it’s cool, but we were pretty psyched and then it was just.. like.. there. We did really like the Wild Reef exhibit, though. There were a few other things we wanted to see that we’d already seen before, but for the most part, we skipped the rest of the aquarium. I was getting so tired! Maybe I’m just old or maybe I’m just not used to a 10-year-old kid’s pace and being responsible for someone else, but I was exhausted! Plus, why does she have to keep asking me questions like “What if we get to our stop and you step out but I get caught on the train and can’t get off?” and “What would happen if like a bomb was on the train tracks and the train couldn’t stop in time?” Jeez! Way to stress me out!

We had a good day, though. Later on we went to the movie, filled up on popcorn and then went to dinner at Robey Pizza, a new favorite in our new neighborhood.

* The photos of Steph here are cute, but I liked my animal photos better last time.
