Riley @ Target

December 14th, 2008 · 5 Comments

Nancy emailed me about a month ago to say that a photograph that Riley modeled for made it into a Target sales flier. I was going to pass it on to people who know Nancy and Riley or post about it here, but I didn’t have time. The following Sunday, Kelly called and left me a voice mail. She was at Target around De Pere or Green Bay with Charlotte and she swore that this girl in a display there looked like Riley. She thought she was going crazy. Nancy never told me she’d be on in-store displays, but if I had to guess I’d say it was her!

On Saturday, Amanda, Stephanie, Jessica and I went to Riley’s 4th birthday party. It was in Appleton at The 10th Frame bowling alley. Our old friend Chad, who I haven’t seen since I lived in Appleton almost 10 years ago, owns the bowling alley. It’s pretty old fashioned – no electronic scoring – but is kept up well, it seems. I kind of liked the nostalgia of it.

I only see Riley and her friends and family once or twice/year and it always amazes me how much they’ve grown! There’s only really one baby now, where a couple years ago it seemed like they were all babies. I just looked at the post I made after Riley’s 3rd birthday party and I wrote that same exact thing last year. Ha. Here are her 2nd and 1st birthday photos, too.

The younger kids all had bumpers on their lanes and just took turns throwing the ball down and hitting pins. A lot of them couldn’t even throw it hard enough to knock pins over, but they all seemed to have fun anyway. In our lane Amanda, Nichol, Chris, Stephanie and I played. Luckily, Nichol knew enough about bowling to figure out how to keep a running score. We checked it later on at home and a couple of the scores were slightly off, but everyone still came in the same order. Stephanie ended up winning by a lot!

Yesterday was Riley’s 3rd birthday party. Last year at Gymboree was pretty intense, but this year was about as chill as you could get with 20 kids running around. There was one of those tube playland things with the tub of balls like they have at the McDonald’s playland, so the kids were pretty contained in there. It’s interesting to see some of the kids growing up when I only see them once/year. I guess it’s a combination of that, and seeing kids that I’ve seen grow up through photos of Nancy’s. Then I see them for real and am calling them by name and they’re like “Mommy, who’s that crazy lady?”

Here are photos from Riley’s 2nd birthday and some from her 1st birthday. She’s getting big!

Christmas Cookies, Roscoe Village, Chicago

Today Nancy, Regan and Riley came over and we made cookies and exchanged Christmas gifts. Riley was shy around Dallas at first but after about 10 minutes they were best friends again. She sure is getting big! Even though she’s tiny, which you don’t dare say to her because she’ll say she’s big. Luckily we’re going to a dinner party tonight and hosting a barbecue tomorrow so these cookies won’t stick around here too long!

The thing about making cut out cookies, it always seems like a great idea and the first 5 are fun but then after that you’re sick of it and you have like 4 dozen more cookies to go. Riley even got bored of it. Guess who ended up doing them all? This is the recipe I used for cookies and this the one I used for frosting. The frosting gets hard quickly, which is good for storage, but it we were losing the race to get the frosting on the cookies before it hardened. We had to keep putting it in the microwave. Both the cookies and the frosting taste really good, though. I wanted to make sure of that. I hate flavorless sugar cookies. Also, I learned a trick. If you spread Karo syrup on a cookie, all of the sprinkles will stick. A good way to clean up Riley’s big sprinkles accident. :)
