There’s a New Mayor in Town

Yesterday Rahm Emanuel became Chicago’s 46th mayor, replacing Richard M. Daley, who served the city for 22 years (6 terms!). I love this photo from the Chicago Tribune that shows the changing over of the Chicago Skyway sign.

In early January I shook Rahm’s hand when he was out campaigning at the California Blue Line station. Actually, I was so focused on getting the inbound train that was pulling up that I didn’t really get what happened until a few seconds later, after I dashed up the stairs to the platform. My impression was that he was short (he is 5’5″). Also, someone asked me if I could feel his missing finger when he shook my hand, but it was so fast and I had gloves on, so I don’t remember.

I did not vote for or against Rahm Emanuel. It was something that got screwed up in our wedding planning. We were in Hawaii during the vote. Some of my friends were smart enough to arrange their voting before they left, but it was something that just blew by me. He’s in now. Guess we’ll see how it goes!

The special guest was Mayor Daley. It was the first time I’ve seen him for real, live and up close. My first thought when he walked out: “Man, he’s short!”

More on Gateway Green, the party, and Daley’s speech is on Chicagoist.
