Costco, My New Friend

October 17th, 2007 · 7 Comments

CostcoLast Friday night Dallas still had his rental car from traveling on business that week so we went to Costco. The only time I’d been to Costco before was to get vacation supplies while in Kaua’i, which means we pretty much just hit up the liquor, snacks and local music sections. I’d never taken the time to really look through Costco or walk down each aisle. (See, Phil Ponce, I don’t lie!)

I don’t know how many times I said “Wow, that’s a lot of (fill in the blank)” that night. A lot. And not only did I buy industrial sized shampoo, a 3 pack of huge bottles of ketchup, and 8 5.5 pounds of stir-fry vegetables, but I also got a Kenneth Cole jacket for $30 and a newly-released paperback novel for $8. I think I like Costco.

Saturday we went to Wisconsin to celebrate Jessica’s 3rd birthday. When I go to WI myself I sometimes take Amtrak. It’s $20 each way, which is pretty affordable. But when Dallas and I are both going it adds up to $80 and no longer makes sense. So, this time we rented a car for $35.

Jess is growing up a lot but she is still really shy when there are a lot of people and she’s the center of attention. Amanda said they asked her what she wanted to have on her birthday dinner and instead of pizza or the other usual things you’d expect, Jess said she wanted to have peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Luckily that got overruled and we had sloppy joes with grilled corn and that cheesy potato casserole.. the one with the sour cream and butter that every person in WI knows how to make. Jess did get to pick out the theme of her party: Princesses, the chips: Cheetos, and the candy: sour something gummies (don’t know the proper name). I think cheetos is what she actually had for dinner. It seemed like she barely touched any of the rest of her food. Oh well, it’s HER birthday!

On the way home, Dallas and I were trying to think of all the things we could do with the car for the night and the next morning. We ended up going to Dominick’s and getting the big toilet paper and the box of chicken breasts and two loaves of bread and all sorts of crazy things we wouldn’t want to carry home from the local Jewel.
