Allison & Herm at Mythos Taverna

July 18th, 2010 · 1 Comment

I uncovered these forgotten photos from Allison & Herm’s visit in May. Better late than never, right? Our good friend Allison moved to San Francisco about 3 years ago so we always make it a point to see her when she’s in town. She’s been dating Herm for a couple years now and he fits right in to the group so seamlessly it’s scary. In May we met up at Mythos Taverna, a Greek restaurant on Montrose. Then afterwards we went to Tiny Lounge on Lincoln at Montrose.

Looking back, I didn’t actually take any photos of Allison or Herm… just of my dinner! Figures. Typical rachelleb!!

So, this is what I had:

Garides Giouvetsi: Black tiger shrimps charcoaled and baked in olive oil sweet california red peppers & sun ripened tomatoes topped with crumbles of imported feta cheese served over bed of rice pilaf

We also had a ton of appetizers. The food was all really good and it’s BYO, so you can save some money on liquor. Pretty good for a Greek restaurant outside of Greektown.

Oh, I also had obligatory cute photos of Quinn. He and Dallas sat at the end of the table together because they’re buddies.

CHIRP Launch Party

February 1st, 2010 · 2 Comments

After dinner at Buona Terra, Jess and I headed up to the Lillstreet Art Center in Ravenswood for the Chicago Independent Radio Project (CHIRP) launch party. CHIRP launched this past fall as a truly indpendent music- and arts-focused community radio station. Right now they only broadcast online, but they are hoping to someday broadcast on a low power FM station someday.

Jocelyn, a writer I know from back in my Chicagoist days, is the CHIRP events coordinator and DJs at noon on Fridays. So, she invited me to come to the party and it was nice to see her again and hear about her new venture. The party was fun. There was a live band, great beer and a ton of food, as well. We didn’t eat because we’d just eaten dinner, but we certainly did partake in the beer. And the band. I also got to see The Hixx, who I also know from Chicagoist. I still talk to her a lot online, but, man.. it’s probably been years since we’ve seen each other, so it was great catching up.

CHIRP is a cool project going on here in Chicago… but since they’re online, no matter where you live you can tune in and give them a listen at CHIRPradio.org. Tune in!

Spacca Napoli Pizzeria

September 16th, 2008 · 4 Comments

Spacca Napoli, Ravenswood, Chicago

I’ve been getting together with Erin and Cinnamon for dinner every other month. It’s been great to catch up with these ladies and get to know them better while eating different dinners around North Side neighborhoods.

In June (I know! I’m so behind on posts!) we went to Spacca Napoli Pizzeria. I’d never been before and really enjoyed it. There was a bit of a wait, but Cinnamon had gotten there early to put our name in. I’d have waited anyway. I found the restaurant interior to be charming. The menu includes some antipasti and Neapolitan-style pizza made in a wood-burning oven. Classic Italian.. simple.. fresh ingredients. Delicious!

Cinnamon had been to Spacca Napoli before and recommended the Insalata di Mare, a cold seafood salad, and it was delicious. We then each ordered a pizza, but ended up sharing so we could taste them all. I had the Funghi Pizze (tomatoes, fior di latte mozzarella, basil, mushrooms, olive oil). Soooo good. Can’t wait to go back.

Last night was the big mustache unveiling. We all met up at Chicago Ale House and Chad and Cousin had to show off their growth and grooming. Cousin was to grow “The Higgins” and Chad was to grow “The T.C.” Neither looked very much like the coasters we made the dare off of, but for some reason Cousin’s mustache was just more creepy and shocking. And it didn’t look like I thought it would. It was a pornstache, for sure. Chad did kind of have the creepy child molester look going on, though. In the end Cousin won the money. We tried to give him more money to try to grow out “The Magnum,” but I’m pretty sure both of these guys shaved last night as soon as they got home.

Friday night specials at the Wild Goose are $2.50 Bass, Guinness and Harp pints and an all-you-can-eat Friday Fish Fry* for $6.75. This, combined with some exciting NCAA tournament games happening, ensured that the Wild Goose was packed. Using Jake & Dave’s $10 they gave me for drinking, I was able to purchase 4 beers instead of the 2 they intended. Maybe it’s the cheap drink prices in Chicago that will turn me into an alcoholic and not my friends giving me money specifically for drinking.. or maybe it’s a combination of both. After the Wild Goose we hit up this lame club called Crush (thanks Trent), met everyone over to Ginbucks, scarfed some food from Flash Taco, and piled into Kristin’s bed to watch an exciting episode of CHiPS and a biography on Jeffrey Dahmer. Before I knew it, it was 4 am and I decided I better go home so I split a cab (5 to 20, 5 to 20) with Kevin & Justin.

*Friday Fish Fry is a cultural tradition in the midwest that stemmed from the religious tradition of not eating meat on Fridays.
