Raising Victor Vargis is about.. um.. raising Victor Vagas. Seriously, Victor is a sweet-talkin 18-year-old Latino full of machismo trying to prove himself to be a ladies man and trying to score the prettiest girl on the block, “Juicy Judy” Ramirez, after his rep was ruined when it was found out he was sleeping with “Fat Donna”. Victor’s grandmother is convinced that Victor is the devil incarnate and that he’s a bad influence over his younger and sister. This movie is so funny. And heart wrenching at times. There were these silences in the movie where nothing was happening and no one was speaking. They were the most touching.
It was a bit bizarre to be sitting in a theater watching a movie that was filmed just blocks away. Being able to identify so thoroughly with the setting of the movie allows you to connect so deeply with the story. I think this is why I really enjoy movies that are filmed in New York.
